Why did he bust so badly in the league?

We had several players from that era on the juice. A lot of guys were taking stuff then. Just look at Tony Mandarich he was on every PED known to man.He was an outstanding CFB LBer...and before anyone brings up the steroid stuff....our own AA LBer Mira Jr was also taking them.
I believe he had a drug addiction problem after his injury and that was part of his downfall. But yes Charles Rogers is one of the best college WRs and draft prospects ever. Was supposed to be the second coming of Randy Moss. He had very similar athletic traits and size. Why did he bust so badly in the league?
I remember a guy saying he went to watch Jammi German and James Burgess to see what all the hype was about with our new incoming freshman. He said he left practice that day and discovered Ray Lewis was not only the best freshman but the best player on the team. We got a steal.I remember when Lewis first started playing. Anyone could tell he was the real thing.
Two collarbone injuries and he spiraled into depressionWhy did he bust so badly in the league?
True but more players play as freshmen and sophomores now than they did before so while there's not a ton of 4 year careers, they're not spending their first two seasons sitting on the bench anymore.A few problems in this thread:
1. Since the NFL allowed underclassmen to declare for the draft few players have multiple great seasons. Who was the last 3X All-American, let alone 4X? This makes it difficult to compare careers in different eras. Today a kid plays as a true FR, starts some as a SO, balls out as a JR, and bolts for the league. Maybe you get a dominant SO season.
Barry Sanders had one great season, the greatest single season ever for a RB, but no one is going to argue he's not one of the GOATs. Think he'd have multiple great seasons had AA Thurman Thomas been allowed to declare early? Or if Sanders had to return for his SR season? Prior to Barry, Marcus Allen had the all-time season his SR year, with a stellar JR season. He also played behind Heisman Trophy winner Charles White as FR and SO.
The obvious point is even the greats often have to wait their turn, especially at some positions, and especially on the better teams.
2. The CFB game has changed such that average QBs and WRs production exceeds top CFB players in the early 80s, or 70s, or earlier. A QB throwing for 3,500 yards and 30 TDs in today's pass-oriented offenses is considered 'productive' today but would have been AA/Heisman material in the 70s, early 80s.
Yes, more play earlier but still have to develop. Few players are starters and dominate straight out of high school.True but more players play as freshmen and sophomores now than they did before so while there's not a ton of 4 year careers, they're not spending their first two seasons sitting on the bench anymore.
Mandarich came off AAS and developed a painkiller addiction. Was overrated and performed poorly in the league. Sad story, but rebounded enough to start at OG for the Colts for a few seasons early in the Manning era. Was out of the league before the Colts were a regular playoff participant and won a Super Bowl.I believe he had a drug addiction problem after his injury and that was part of his downfall. But yes Charles Rogers is one of the best college WRs and draft prospects ever. Was supposed to be the second coming of Randy Moss. He had very similar athletic traits and size.
