If Golden, Richt, Diaz had Mario's resources...

Manny would still be mid. Golden would still be mid because of No D and his mentality. Richt maybe would have gotten closer. He had some decent teams at UGA but he reached his ceiling i think. Cristobal openness to changing stuff is what is progressing stuff along, not just resources. What resources would have made Golden fire No D. What resources woulda made Manny not sit in his office and go greet recruits in the IPF?
Or play 3 vs 3 basketball games on Thursday and play Golf on Tuesday.

...could they have had the same or near level of success?
I'm loving this offseason, but it does make me wonder.
And by resources I include the much improved support of the university in recent years.

They would be dog ****

Give Mario his credit bruh those kids choose us cause of him. They are getting offered the same at elite schools and the relationship is what gets it done for us. Hate that this will be mentioned to cope for the other coaches and diminish what MC has and will do for this team and university

Boys already coping for Manny mostly, that’s what this post is. Pretty sure the bama boards had the same bs posts about bama resources after Saban got there.

I would say Coach Richt would get the closest. He would do the best with the resources now. One neg on Richt is he didn't want to make changes with his son as OC. I don't know what changes in that circumstance? So he would do the best job. But Mario has a detailed vison of the way Miami needed to be run. An attention to every detail that the others just don't have! I was a "Lane Train" guy at the time. Mario was my 2nd choice. I was happy Cristobal was coming! But thought Lane would do better. I was wrong! Obviously, Cristobal was the right choice. He has been a God-send for us!!!! Even when we lose a piece (staff, recruits, or players) I know what is coming in is BETTER that what is leaving!!! That hasn't happened since Butch for me.

Maybe, richt but that’s it.
The issue with Richt, in my opinion, is we got him too late in life. If we could have snagged Richt earlier in his life/career, say, after Butch left and we got him instead of Coker I absolutely think he could have had a successful run here. Those other guys though? Heck no. To be an elite program everything has to be running at peak efficiency. Recruiting, player development, nutrition, strength & conditioning, assembling a great coaching staff, etc. Just because you throw a bunch of money at a program doesn’t mean any Joe Blow Coach off the street will be successful. Mario understands what it takes to be an elite program. Those other guys, particularly Golden and Diaz, don’t.

Considering this is the first time UM is actually investing in football, it’s remarkable we’ve had the success we did. That was all due to coaching and recruiting prowess, which none of these guys had enough of to overcome the lack of resources. I don’t think more money would have solved much for them. Richt is probably the only one in the discussion but if we were serious about him, you needed to make a move 5 years earlier and attach big budgets to coordinators he couldn’t refuse.

Richt would have some really good teams, I don’t think Oline play would be what it is though. Golden would mess it up with the scheme. Manny might slip into the playoffs a few times, but I don’t think his style would get to a championship, his defense would be ok because a little better talent. But Richt would be the only one to get us to a championship.

I very clearly said "decent" coach. I dunno where TF you got "good coach" from.
Correct. You said “decent.” I’ve seen similar posts where the poster said “good” coach.

My point is he would have been neither good or decent if he got rid D’Onfrio. Golden still would have had somebody run his failed defensive scheme. Golden’s teams were also soft, Had some pretty good talent some years, but we also seemed to get pushed around by teams that weren’t considered to be physical, like Virginia. I can’t remember how many times during Golden’s tenure we got absolutely stonewalled trying to run for it on a 3rd and 1.

Richt's fatal flaw was his offense (and, his health for the longevity that is needed in today's CFB). It was just archaic by the time he got here. Game passed him by. But his best season was quarterbacked by Malik Rosier. If he had an NIL budget to get him a top Portal QB like Ward, Beck, or Mensah...Richt probably gets us to his era's CFP.

Maybe, richt but that’s it.
No No No GIF

Sales isn’t just work ethic. It’s a genuine skill. It’s not luck, it’s not resources. Absolutely, those help. If the university was supporting those other guys this same way, would they have been more successful? I’m sure. But Mario is good at what he does because he’s very skilled.

Manny could have Jeff Bezos’ funding the program and it wouldn’t have mattered.

Richt and Golden’s issues were philosophical so it’s probably moot as well

A lot of people on this thread are ignoring some crucial changes that have made it possible for Miami(and Mario) to compete.

NIL made it possible for schools like Miami(and everyone else outside of 5-10 politically connected schools) to compete for high end talent in a truly open market. It's not an accident that as NIL became a thing the stranglehold the SEC had on the sport has weakened. When you have to compete for talent and the market isn't restricted, it becomes a lot more difficult to hoard talent. Golden, Richt and Diaz had obstacles in regards to acquiring talent, obstacles that Mario doesn't have. Mario is a far better recruiter than those three, but I'm willing to bet that had Mario taken the job in an era where he couldn't financially compete for talent, his recruiting skills wouldn't matter. Yes, Mario was a dynamite recruiter at both Bama and Oregon, but that was also two of the few schools allowed to compete full blast for recruits.

We've also learned that the true value of high end talent is significantly more than a Dodge Challenger and bag of cash. There's a difference between Car Dealer Money and VC Money. The institution has done a wonderful job of getting the donors that are passionate about this together and allowing them to do their thing. This monster has always been possible, but with the NCAA always one step away from decimating the program, it couldn't be unleashed. Now, Miami can not only play with the big boys, we can do it without having one hand tied behind our backs, thanks to the corrupt NCAA.

Not to mention the Nevin situation

Golden was probably the biggest disappointment hire I've ever experienced as a 'Cane. The dude had a legit staff(When you look at what Fisch has become, it's obvious that had he stayed long term, offense wouldn't have been an issue), found a way to acquire talent in an era where it wasn't easy, but his loyalty to D'Onofrio and inability to delegate was his undoing.

Always remember that Mark Richt, who was moving towards the end of his career, was able to win 19 games his first two years, with a team made up of mostly Golden guys. Al understood how to sell the program, but the issue was that consistency wasn't there. If you spent any amount of time around him, you could see that it was all an act, he thought that you had to be slick in Miami and people saw that wasn't his true personality type. He also didn't have an AD worth a **** and that also hurt him, because a real AD would have forced him to fire D'Onofrio and hire a legit DC to run the defense without interference.

Richt was a great bridge, we needed an adult, and he was exactly that. The issue is that once he walked away(and did us a solid by NOT forcing a buyout situation, because he realized it was over for him), we had an incompetent moron that decided to take the lazy way out and hire Manny Diaz, without interviewing a single qualified candidate. There's a reason why Mario struggled his first two years, the talent was in the toilet, compared to what Richt inherited. Diaz was a terrible recruiter, and an even worse program manager. The only thing he did that was remotely close to good was hire two coordinators(Baker and Lashlee) that were able to stop the bleeding somewhat. Baker got blamed for crap that probably wasn't his fault(Tough to win with mediocre talent and a HC that doesn't demand accountability from players).

Sales isn’t just work ethic. It’s a genuine skill. It’s not luck, it’s not resources. Absolutely, those help. If the university was supporting those other guys this same way, would they have been more successful? I’m sure. But Mario is good at what he does because he’s very skilled.
Mario is very skilled, but that skill doesn't matter when you can't offer the same things other skilled people are offering. That's the point. Mario at Miami in 2016 isn't nearly as successful as Mario in 2026, because Miami couldn't offer high end recruits the same things that UGA, Bama, Clemson and others were allowed to offer. People were calling for our program to be disbanded because a rogue booster paid for an abortion and a USED washer and dryer set. Bama had an entire roster of guys driving high end cars, purchased from the HC's dealership and NO ONE ASKED QUESTIONS. How do you compete with that? How do you compete with guys that were mortal Miami locks for months, and the day before NSD, they choose LSU for "Academics"? It was always BS, we knew what was going on, but the NCAA selectively enforced their own rules, which meant that schools like Miami were screwed.

The best thing that ever happened to Miami was the NIL ruling and the neutering of the NCAA. It gave Miami a legit path forward, the money people could now say "Hey, we now have a LEGAL way to recruit kids, we can now compete without worrying about the NCAA hammering us, just let us do the work". It's now a risk free venture, compared to 10 years ago, where even a whisper of impropriety would have been a PR nightmare for the University.
