Idk why some of you are so concerned about Nickel as our starter

They’re head coaches & offensive coordinators. Dawson is on the list, so some might say we have a QB coach.

No staff has a full time assistant solely training QBs. That why teams have a bevy of GAs, analyst & support staff.

* Hinshaw was hired as UCF's offensive coordinator ahead of the 2023 season. He was then demoted to co-coordinator upon Tim Harris, Jr.'s hiring in January. We haven't seen any word on a new salary for Hinshaw, so we're rolling with that figure for now.

If we don't like our QB stable, then that kid from USC might be the best option...He'll be a red shirt freshman next year. (Like CJ Carr this year)

That’s not how you decide on your future qb. If I’m a coach I need to see it now before I’m comfortable handing my program off to you. Taking guys on potential is the number one reason Gm’s get fired. Production is best bet. Hence why coaches go to the portal for their qb. Far less risk if he’s shown he can do it elsewhere.

Now I’m not saying he won’t be that guy but to this point he’s shown he needs a lot of work before handing things off to him.

The trick of this whole situation is that he is a true freshman, who has been on campus for exactly one year.

LOTS of QBs, over the years, needed a couple of years to be ready.

I'm fully in favor of taking a Portal QB, but if we have to play Emory and Luke, we'll just have to do it. ****, even a signed Portal QB could get hurt between now and August. Won't be pretty, but still...

I take it from your response youre on the older side.

With all due respect, college football is very different from when we won championships in the 80s. And if you think we aren't going to get a QB in the portal this cycle, prepare to shocked. Why dont you wait a few more days before losing your mind. Youre living in an outdated model of college football.
I'm not losing my mind. I'm just saying it won't be possible to always get a portal QB you really want. Then there are injuries. Whatcha gonna do if your portal QB goes down in fall camp? Injuries are still a thing, no matter how old I am. ;)

I know it's great to bring in the most experienced, talented QB you can. You still need to have others guys ready.

mario is being paid $8,300,000 (not including incentives) this year before taxes, retirement contributions and his agents cut to worry about this..chill

As am I . His arm talent is elite . The ball explodes out of his hand. He just needs 20 pounds. Imo he could be the one to end the trend.

He needs to be at this point. Our QB room minus the portal has been on the flea market table beside the brass knuckles and Chinese stars.

This is the dumbest ******* comment that gets repeated ad nauseum in here.

Point out the home grown QBs having success and then compare it to the playoffs the last two years.

Show me those results or STFU.

I'll give you a hint: practically none of the top teams play their "home grown QB". You sound like you're ******* Dabo talking about the portal.
And if we don't hit on our portal QB? Then what, Einstein? You have to have a backup plan.

It kinda stupid to say you gonna go after developmental QBs so u dont have to pay a top rated FR a big bag. But then dont have a system in place to develop them. Who is coaching Judd, Emory?

“Why aren’t we just handing the offense over to an unproven redshirt freshman?” Might be one of the weirdest takes out there.

Even in the old days, before all the transfers, teams weren’t just handing the keys over to kids with zero game experience and one year of running with the walk-ons in practice.

Wonder if that German QB that Joer on Canesport used to prop up has any availability left. Good ol Joer lol

It's funny how fans go off what they heard about a freshman practice report in shorts with walkons....there is no guarantee he will be good right now or not...Miami needs to have a vet with experience come in to push for a starting spot...

So why was he recruited?
And why wasn't he aggressively over-recruited if the (negative) writing is on the wall?
Rhetorical question not necessarily directed at you.

It's too early for the writing to be on the wall in his first year, as a January enrollee.

What’s crazy to me is when he was a freshman he was thrown in horrible situations and never looked overwhelmed. He even made enough throws to win one game and almost beat a much better FSU team. He didn’t play very well but he was never a deer in headlights. Then the Iowa State game happened and it was atrocious . He looked worse than his freshmen year and more flustered. You rarely see that.

Against I-State, he hadn't played in a game in 14 months. Sad.

If he has to open up the 2026 season against a cupcake like F$U, he will probably be able to acclimate to the better teams we will play afterwards. We don't play Notre Dame until November.

Then why recruit QBs out of high school at all, if all we are ever going to play is experienced QBs?

So there is no assistant on staff that works with qbs under dawson like with the Dbs you got Jefferson

Yes, there are "Grad Assistant" level guys who work with the QB. But nobody at a more senior "one of the 11 assistant coaches" level.

And if we don't hit on our portal QB? Then what, Einstein? You have to have a backup plan.
We have taken a QB every single year from HS and have 4 on the roster.

We (and 75%+ of the top programs) are no longer willing to invest millions in a HS QB so we (and many others) now take lower rated QBs with traits and try to hit the lottery.

We could be like USC and countless others that took a 5* QB out of HS and paid them big money only for them to sit for a year and transfer elsewhere.

You must be Forrest Gump to not understand this.
