Idk why some of you are so concerned about Nickel as our starter

Why aside from Beck? You cant remove the starter and judge a qb room off its backups.

I do agree, Judd Anderson was a terrible take.

Nickel on the other hand, was a baller in HS. Solid 4 star prospect. He was a true freshman this year. Too early for me to call him a bust yet.

Dereon Coleman, another 4 star. Productive HS player.

Last two years at QB have been solid. Judd was atrocious and Emory was very questionable. So Mario adapted his strategy off the first two years....but now that takes time.

We will continue to hit the portal until the young guys show they are ready. Next years QB room is not final, so to try to judge it yet is premature. But I see the board is in panic mode this morning. A lot of personality traits are showing themselves today.
 
He could be good OP, but he could also be hot garbage, and therein lies the rub. I think that’s what has everyone concerned. You knew what you were getting in Cam. You knew what you were getting in Carson. We have no idea what we’re getting in Emory/Nickel. Will Emory magically turn into a first round talent from now until game 1? Will Nickel be at least on par with Beck? I think I know what the answer to both of these questions will be for most on here including me. The problem is the uncertainty, and this program is at a place right now where we unequivocally should not be having to deal with uncertainty at the most important position on the field.

Well yes and no. That’s how you get fired in the nfl. It’s not apples to apples in college football.

Potential is the most dangerous word in the scouting world . But yes I’m speaking on college . The potential part is everywhere, every level . Give me production over potential if my career is on the line. Cignetti echoes that the first sentence whenever he’s asked about how he’s successful.

You dont earn a starting QB job at Miami just because "at some point we got to play our recruited QBs".....no you earn it when you fckin earn it. Ball out in practice. When you get a shot in mop up duty, dont underthrow your only pass by 20 yards. Etc.

I mean yeah. Sure. You’re not wrong. In the context of the convo tho it was can you give the guy reps with scholarship players and see what he’s got lol not hand him the keys

I think you missed my point . Basing your takes on potential vs production is how you end up fired. It only takes one bad year of losing momentum with a program , fans and boosters. Two years is a trend . Coaches don’t want to flirt with that. Hence why they bring in sure things versus guys that haven’t produced. It’s common sense.

Fired where? The university of Miami or Toledo? No one is getting fired if a QB doesn’t work out. They get fired when they don’t have a contingency plan.

As am I . His arm talent is elite . The ball explodes out of his hand. He just needs 20 pounds. Imo he could be the one to end the trend.
 
But I think your overall point is right I don’t wanna sound like I’m arguing to argue @Cribby but in perspective there are only about 8 or 9 good qb’s in the pros. Even fewer that move the needle for a **** poor roster in college.
 
it's nothing against nickel or any other inexperienced qb

but experience at qb wins

look at will Howard, mendoza/beck,etc

There’s not many good qb’s anywhere lol. As I posted earlier “ qb teaching / development is as bad as its every been”. Then folks wonder why qb’s are trending downward . Coaches on the lower college levels are the only ones developing . In the NFL there’s only a handful of guys.

I am often wrong but I do think our trend of portal guys ends soon. Coleman is a guy we’re gonna try with. I think

Nah a second string QBs role on THAT PARTICULAR TEAM isn't development. It's consistency. He comes in the game simply to hold the fort down. Now it's different if you're saying it's a blow out and give some reps up. In that instance I would agree on nickel. BUT I understand Emory because you don't want rust you can't get off of him.
