I Rewatched the App State game

2star WR running past a bunch of 3,4,5star kids on the kick return: -7
Ivey letting the man run free for TD: -7 to -4
Reed getting bullied for a kick block: +3
Harley and Mallory dropping 4 passes: +3
Penalties: +3 - +7

I'd say our single biggest issue is the time of possession, especially on the D side. Way too many missed tackles or opportunities to get off the field and give the offense another chance.

Gaynor gave up two sacks by disengaging a defender when he could have remained engaged and helped out. Donaldson gave up a sack by remaining engaged with the DT while the DE ran past him on the stunt to the inside in his zone. Justice gave up a sack by getting bull-rushed forcing King to step up into a DT that just beat Gaynor and Donaldson because they thought the other was going to block him. Overall, I'm not seeing an OL that wants to bully DL but instead a very passive OL that will only block someone if they have to. This leads to King getting happy feet vs letting the WRs get open even if they aren't open within the first 2.5 seconds.

That 2-star WR is one of the best athletes in the entire country. Just because he wasn't recruited here and plays for App State doesn't mean he's not allowed to make plays. He's a better athlete than 95% of our team.

Inexcusable to give up a kick return TD to anybody, especially when it's not an insane individual effort (he didn't break 6 tackles), but let's not pretend he's a quadriplegic. That kid is one of the best athletes in the entire country.

Why would you take away the safety?
Normally snappers dont throw the ball 20 yards over the punters head. Yes, it still is a game that has to be played, can't play what-if scenarios, yadda yadda, etc

Take away our dropped passes and a kick off return and we win by 2 touchdowns. OP is acting like a mediocre performance is somehow shocking.

App St. is ranked #29 in Espn's FPI. Are they a good team? No, neither are we. We've been what we've been. And anyone who thinks App St. is still an FCS team hasn't been paying attention to college football in 5 five years.

Yeah, I know you can't play what-if scenarios. App State is a better and more complete TEAM then we are. Being a fan of this team is exhausting.

I'm just saying, they are a team full of 2 and 3 star players, and we regularly recruit in the top 20 of the country, and we could've lost at home just based on 1 factor. Let's say we had Baxa kicking instead of Borregales. Boom, automatic loss. Really just tired of these pathetic, uninspired, poorly coached performances.
That isn't to discredit App state. They are a great team. It just doesn't inspire confidence that we struggle with fundamentals and constantly play down to competition. It isn't that we won by a couple points. It's HOW we did. Getting out-coached by G5 teams. It's just shameful. Our preparation, game planning, and adjustments are just **** poor.

You're continuing to play the "what if" game, though. We are who we are. We have who we have. I'm really not disagreeing with you here, we're all frustrated, but "if we had Baxa instead of Borregales". We don't. We have a good kicker. It's one of the reasons that I thought we'd have a pretty good team this year. He's part of the makeup of the teams. If we had Borreglaes instead of Baxa, we'd have beaten Florida. But we didn't, and we didn't.

Just saying, you can go down an infinite rabbit hole with this stuff. If we don't have a FG blocked on Saturday (rather uncommon occurrence), it's a 5 point game late and they need a TD to beat us instead of a FG, and there's probably a little less anxiety in the last few minutes. If they don't run a kick back for a TD, again a pretty infrequent occurrence, we probably win by double digits. But those things happened.

You are correct. I apologize for going down that road first.

Good god people. It wasn't a loss to J'vill State. It was a bad win against a halfway decent team. App State is a bowl team this year. Should we have beaten them by double digits? Sure. Is Manny mediocre? Sure. App state is a Duke or a G'Tech
Slurpers have gone from our Canes crush them to halfway decent team.

Agreed.

If someone uses "they dropped a pass", then apply same to our Canes.

App St is a f*ck of a lot better than (current) Duke or GT. Doesn't mean we played a good game by any stretch but the people acting like we just squeaked by Bethune clearly don't pay much attention to college football outside the top 25 bubble.

100% agree and didn't mean it as disrespect for Virgil. It is a sign that Miami has missed on 2* kids that can have big impacts. Dmarco Jackson (52) played better than Jennings and Steed, I'm sure we'd take him as a recruit. Virgil's speed was clearly an issue for our team and the second game in a row that we had no answer for someone that could run 10.5 or faster.

Jackson was pretty impressive on Saturday, for sure.

You mean they should have beaten us by double digits if they had a QB that could hit the broadside of a barn! 🤣😂

To verify that it really did happen
I would rather have a root canal without novocaine. Only two good things to watch over again. The cat in a hat is back and the Borregales game winner, and this from a guy who flew from Virginia to see it live.

Amazing. You can take away 7 points from them and give us 7 more and suddenly we win by 14 more points. Would never have thought of this.

Just curious what the reaction would have been had we beaten them by 14-20. That would have been going out there and doing what we were supposed to do. But would we be really pumped about doing this to App State?

What if we beat MSU by 14, will anyone be happy? I too want to see a Canes team show up on the field but I don’t know if we can anymore. This offense feels as if it is being led by pEnos again. I had been expecting Lashlee to take a step forward and we have regressed as demonstrated by these last 2 games. Until we put up 40+ against an average defense, I am not happy. We have had good defenses and serviceable defenses over the last few years (with the exception of last year) but had lacked the offense to compete. I thought we got the O solved last year (King and Lashlee) and that our defense needed the improving (which was being resolved this off-season) and now the O can’t move the ball.

I am sure that when it comes together, it will be beautiful. But in the meanwhile, I am getting impatient and frustrated and consumed by the thought that last year’s O was the exception and not the rule. I am probably speaking what is in most of our minds and why we are getting unhinged about this team after game 2. I don’t know where this leaves me besides wanting to see some fire power out of our offense and jumping out of my seat with excitement. It has been beyond lame so far!

Man. A reasonable post in the week after a WIN here. I'm in shock.

Just trying to keep it real, my man. What the others were saying wasn't crazy, I do the same **** all the time. Especially on the golf course. "Yeah, I can't believe I shot 92 today, but come on that one 7-iron on #6 just clipped that tree. Then I flubbed the chip. If it doesn't hit that branch, that's a par. And then half a roll on that bogey putt on #11....." hahahahahha. We all play armchair QB. But it's gotta go both ways in football, especially college football, when there are a lot of mental and physical mistakes made by both teams **** near every week. These kids aren't pros.

It was a disgusting battle of undisciplined talent vs an overachieving group that couldn’t quite finish a power 5 on the road. I can’t wait to see how this scenario plays against ACC competition.

Canes 5-16 on 3rd down!! Woof!!

If Lashlee doesn’t fix this, they will all be unemployed in a few months.

Exactly. There is a reason that field goal was blocked and there is a reason they had a 100 yard touchdown return. That involves good play by them and poor play by us. But those things happen a lot less often than dropped passes.

Going into the season, we all thought we would be 1-1 after 2 games. We still don't know how good Alabama and Appalachian State are, but probably they are great and average, respectively. Yeah we look bad so far and we haven't even covered the spread yet, but the reaction here is completely over the top. Quarterback needs to play better and the coaches need tocoach better, no doubt.

But we are still a touchdown favorite this weekend. Let's beat Michigan State and see where we are after three games and give the negativity a rest for at least two weeks.
