I hope we face Indiana

Cignetti was able to execute a massive rebuild quickly because of the portal and the fact that he knew he could get a ton of guys from JMU to follow him. He was able to establish a culture quickly, because he had a ton of grown men that already knew what he wanted and how things worked. It was a very unique situation, and he took full advantage of it.

The issue is that it's tough to win at a high level consistently, when you aren't recruiting at a high level. I don't know if his quirks resonate with HS kids, he has a lot of Mike Leach in his personality, and that limits his effectiveness as a recruiter. Some kids are going to flock to that, but a lot of the higher end kids won't.

I expect IU to be a consistent 8-10 win team going forward with Cigs, but I believe that's their ceiling.
Yep you can tell it was a very calculated move to the p5

I’ll keep saying it until it’s evident: they made a fatal mistake choosing Hoover over little Mendoza. That kid is going to be something serious for GT Tech these next two seasons.

Had we had a decent offensive output in the first half we would have won. But we didn’t. And lost.
Those free access throws even in red zone having out CBs playing 10 yards off and BAILING into endzone to guard deep IN REDZONE grinds my gears forever also.. Coaches rarely call each other out and both Belicheck and Saban dam near called it malpractice on national tv.

Bizarre as Indiana openly said they took all free access throws in their offense.. Sigh..

They are really well coached so they don’t necessarily need the best recruits if they hit on their evaluations; which is why the JMU guys were able to adjust rather quickly to the B1G. They were essential but their contributions shouldn’t be overstated: IU took the same amount of staffers as transfer-players (13) from JMU. They only had 7 of their thirteen transfers on the team last year; and they were much better than the year before.

They flipped 7-8 of their JMU commits, but Mario Landino, Alberto Mendoza, Daniel Nbuke, and Jah Jah Boyd were the only contributors; w/ Mario and Daniel being the only ones left on the roster.

They had 5 blocked kicks/punts (led the nation) last year so they capitalize on mistakes in all 3 phases. Their offense is built on 2-man running game that carves up defenses with consistent 3-7 yard runs; and, a series of out routes in the quick game that is tuff to defend. Strong defense…..

All that is to say, they’re winners. Highly doubt they fall off in the near future. The only teams who have beaten them were in the natty against each other (ND & OSU). This will be a 9, most likely 10+ win program for the next 5 years at least.

Cignetti had more transfers from non-JMU schools (17) than JMU (13) his first season.

Still, the transfers’ contributions can be cloud how well he did turning the holdovers, both players and longtime IU commits, into key contributors, from the Tom Allen regime — Omar Cooper, Louis Moore, Amare Ferrell, Jamari Sharpe, Isaiah Jones, Charlie Becker, Khobie Martin, etc.

A guy like Rolijah Hardy was an undersized freshman LB transfer outta Navy Prep-Academy, w/ no college stats but was recruited by JMU outta Lakeland HS. No powerhouse wanted him outta HS or the prep school and now he is an anchor for that IU defense. Becker is a Buckeye legacy who was passed on by Hartline, Day & co.

Wasn't their avg roster age like 22-23 or something? Either way I haven't met one Indiana fan I liked, or knew of any who was a fan before last year. They came out in droves all of a sudden during the playoffs.
23.....47 players were 22 or older. I dont think they will be like TCU(one hit wonder) but I dont see them maintaining playoffs every year either. Roster is not built for that.

Yeah, I don't think they'll drop that much. They're excellent at talent evaluation (Mario seems pretty strong there also), they have a lot of money, and they're well-coached.

On their road to the NC, we were the only team that even gave them a game.

Yeup. First national champion without reaching the prerequisite threshold for blue-chip ratio; their run certainly wasn’t luck although I feel much better about our outlook than theirs.

All this Cig talk and whopeee for them....

But just consider..........our Canes were two plays away and minutes from beating their A**......seriously that playoff game could have gone either way.

Take the Superman dive by Mendoza and the Canes win going away when added to the block and interception pictured results

That is reality, and we need not twist ourselves into pretzels as Mario is reloading not rebuilding with a proven plan. The Portal hits......... and off a 39 th recruital ranking......... do not forbode them winning many in '26.

They won last year........ but in preseason prognostication they barely make the top 5 or 10....
The Saban like fawning over Cig befuddles me.......it looks so fake and more like luck to me....

She should visit Notre Dame - man! They're bad.
Around 2010 I had a black chick that worked for me who played volleyball for Bama. She schooled me on “The Machine”. Black athletes get treated well as you can imagine… very insulated.

But how they really feel about black people and treated the non athletes there is another story.

We're going to find out. I know Cignetti is a talented developer and game planner. He may be the best. He's going to run head first into "the machine" that is bigtime football. Maybe he is so disruptive, so transformational, he can beat it down. I don't believe it.

I think he's falling back down to earth. Will be the new Beamer-ball or as @Canedude08 said, the new Mike Leach.

Indiana's schedule this year is as weak as ours. Are there even three Top 20 teams in this list?: North Texas, Howard, Western Kentucky, Northwestern, Rutgers, Nebraska, Taint, Michigan, Minnesota, USC, Washington and Purdue.

Taint, maybe USC, maybe Washington. maybe Michigan. They'll all beat each other and claim they're Top 20 because they're in the BiG. But other than Ohio State, are the others really and better than Clemson, Ga Tech, Louisville or SMU?

Even then, Indiana will lose at least 3 games IMO. They are not making the playoffs. And they'll bounce around 8-10 from then on until Cignetti gets hired away.

“The Machine” is a political organization at Bama, they have never been welcoming of Blacks, in fact the Greeks that make up the majority of the Machine are organizations that decided to integrate less than 20 years ago.

Athletes are treated “well”, but there’s a reason why a lot of those athletes don’t return to campus at the same rate our former letter winners do, or at schools like Ohio State, Michigan or USC.

Saw a breakdown of their OL. iIRC it was Brooks Austin who did it. Said they only have 13 OL on the roster. that’s probably not even enough to run a practice. And 6 of the 13 are either freshmen or RS freshmen. They are an injury bug and a couple bad portal evals away from being a 7-5 team.

IMO, one ring validates that he already beat it; and he did it faster than anybody else in the playoff era; and guys who have won in their first or second year like Erickson, Coker, Meyer, Tressel, & Chizik — all did it at programs that won rings before. Cignetti did it at the P4 program with the most losses. He’s an annoying prick, but he is in unprecedented territory, not just as a CFB coach, but across all sports.

Heck, even that first year he won eleven regular season games which Leach only did once in 21 years. Beamerball didn’t takeoff (win 10+ games) until he made Bud Foster the DC. None of Cignetti’s coordinators seem to have such an outsized role in his success.

He’s not Eric Morris who knows how to identify, adjust to, and develop future NFL quarterbacks—better than anybody else— who put up prolific collegiate numbers; but he doesn’t have to be to win a ton of games.

Everyone’s schedule looks weak when you’re levels above em. IU is one of the only p4 teams without ooc p4 opponents, but that’s largely because of how bad they were before Cignetti. He faced tougher opponents in the postseason. They beat the team in front of em 27 outta 29 times; that’s the most important thing.

I’m an ACC Stan lol. You’ll never see me calling the SEC / B1G the P2 because I don’t believe the difference is so stark between the ACC and XII & those two conferences. No surprise that Purdue fell apart when the Brohms went back home to Louisville. Agreed about their in-conference schedule not being a gauntlet; i wish more CiS posters felt similar.

I do believe he made a MASSIVE mistake letting little Mendoza go to GT; and it will be the first consequential mistake during his tenure at IU. That said, Hoover is good enough to return them to the playoffs.

Their schedule does appear a lot tuffer, but such was the case last year before Penn State imploded. We’ll see. All the props I’ve given him aside, i do believe he is generally overrated considering some have already proclaimed him the greatest coach in the history of the sport.

USC, OSU, Washington, and Michigan are each losable games. I’d be stunned if they lost any of the other ones. They don’t commit many penalties which gives them an edge. If they go 10-2, they’ll be back in the playoffs.
