Walton had very solid production as a sophomore and was playing lights out as a junior before the injury. If I remember correctly, he was getting over 7 yards per carry when he went down. It's not like he had no body of work for scouts to make a judgement on. His balance, vision and versatility got him drafted.
I agree Walton was solid, but "solid" doesn't = 4th round pick
As for playing "lights out" his Junior year, I saw the same pattern as Fr & Soph years:
Walton Freshman Year
Vs. Bethune & FAU - 24 att, 127 yds,
5.3 ypc, 4 TD's
Vs. Everyone Else - 106 att, 334 yds,
3.2 ypc, 4 TD's
Walton Sophomore Year
Vs. FAMU, FAU, App St - 48 att, 401 yds,
8.4 ypc, 7 TD's
Vs. Everyone Else - 161 att, 761 yds,
4.4 ypc, 7 TD's
Walton Junior Year
Vs. Bethune & Toledo - 27 att, 352 yds,
13.0 ypc, 3 TD's
Vs. Everyone Else - 29 att, 76 yds,
2.6 ypc, 0 TD's
Walton Career
Vs. Bethune, FAMU, FAU & Toledo - 99 att, 880 yds,
8.9 ypc, 14 TD's
Vs. Everyone Else - 296 att, 1,126 yds,
3.8 ypc , 12 TD's
Walton vs. weak teams kept getting better and better. Walton vs. good teams stayed pretty level
Now compare that to Homer
Homer Career
Vs. Bethune, FAMU, FIU, Sav. St. & Toledo - 66 att, 416 yds,
6.3 ypc, 3 TD's
Vs. Everyone Else - 238 att, 1,326 yds,
5.6 ypc , 8 TD's
Homer is better against good competition, more consistent, is bigger, and is a much better athlete. Just a better NFL prospect.
