Here's what I know on Mark Matthews...

What's his fascination with LT all of a sudden? Has he even taken a snap at LT in high school? It just seems like a lame excuse on his end.

I’ll tell you this right now — if Cantwell was asked to play center this year, he’d say yes immediately. If he were asked to play Safety, he’d say yes in two seconds. Heck, Mauigoa played three years of RT and will now play guard at the next level. No complaints from him

Would Matthews? I’m not so sure.

Great Coaching? ✅
Development at your position? ✅
Possible Path to Early Playing Time? ✅
Strong NIL? ✅
Hometown team? ✅

If he sees all of that and still chooses to go to a team in ATM that has not won a national title since before WW2, I genuinely don't know what else to tell you. Some kids just want to get away for college lol. Mario has made it clear we want kids who want to be Canes. Writing is on the wall that this does not appear to be the case for this kid. We'll get ours and nothing going to stop this train.

Numbers alone will make it challenging to get a top 5 class. We might only sign 22-23 guys while other teams might secure 25-28 person classes. I'd much rather focus on a weighted average rather than a straight average to grade this class.

We aren’t getting either. People are freaking out about MM, but we’re covered for now at OT. DT Is where we have real trouble brewing and where our recruiting last few cycles has really fallen short.

I will warn some of you right now that if you make this place insufferable with negativity I will not hesitate to put you in purgatory or worse.
This is still a Miami Hurricanes message boards for people who ENJOY discussions about the Hurricanes. That does not mean we cannot and should not be critical when deserved. But it does mean that gloating in negativity, or about your own predictions of failure, have no place on this board.

Let’s also keep in mind that this is recruiting and NONE of us knows exactly why a recruitment does in a certain direction. That is very different from watching a game and commenting about plays that can be objectively observed.

Govern yourselves accordingly and try to act like adults even if doing so goes against your nature.

yeah, he's talented but some guys just want to see other things ... either that or it's a competition issue, which if that's the case he's better off at a&m

I agree, because Cantwell and Francis are all in team guys. I can’t say the same for Matthews.
 
I see several people tooting their own horn about telling us Mark Matthews will not be a Hurricane. That's very comical to say the least. Anyone with common sense can make that statement. The guy has been on campus numerous times, has the ability to be coached by an excellent staff, offered a ton of money and still no commitment. I can't blame Mario for anything because he's done such a super job. The reality is he doesn't want to be a Cane and after he declares on Friday I would move on to much more needed commitments who WANT TO BE A CANE. Certainly the D line and LB are two places to look and a big physical receiver and another TE. It did cross my mind how would Cantwell would feel if Matthews got a bigger NIL package than him. We are so blessed to have Cantwell who loves being a CANE. This program is headed in the right right direction with or without Matthews. It doesn't matter he's in our backyard or as some of you refer to the optics. He doesn't want to stay in Miami and play for us. It's very simple. GO CANES and spend some money on others. My only minor complaint is that Mario spent way too much resources and time on Matthews. He should have been more focused on Olu and Folorunshu .Hate to lose both of them to ND but ya never know. It's a long season for sure.

Both teams, and especially ND are P ISSED at how 2025 ended up and are unbelievably aggressive on the trail. The DT from Chicago, not surprising, losing MM sucks, no other way to spin it but Mario has proven a few times when things looks bleak in spring/summer he somehow shocks the s hit out of us at the end so we’ll see how it all turns out.

Notre Dame has practically folded its men’s basketball program. Lost all the good or promising players off an already poor team (Burton, Haralson, Certa - all with multiple years of eligibility) along with four other guys. They are institutionally all in on football.

Do we think EJ putting out the article had an impact with TAMU upping the pressure to get Matthews to commit now? If I remember correctly, him posting info early got him in trouble with the Michigan brass/ fans for exactly that.

Impossible to say for you and me. It’s May. And you and me are just a couple of guys that read things on forums. Nobody thought Wright was coming. At 1 point, everyone had Cantwell gone. Justin Scott, same thing. I know that we’re going into this season with arguably the best DL in the country 2 years in a row. I think we should give Mario just a little bit of trust. When we start underperforming like so many of these star powered teams, Il get concerned.
