Here's what I know on Mark Matthews...

Jmho
The REAL variable imo
He may not built for Miami!!! Mentally
He may be a bit soft and doesn’t want to compete to the level it requires now at Miami
He wants it handed to him and that is not happening at Miami
This is where I've been as well.

It doesn't lessen the loss or excuse it here, but alot of times when we say "Miami isn't for everybody" it is just a cope, but TOO MANY times its straight facts.

Ain't no pressure on them kids at ATM. They don't even get bent out of shape when they lose to Texas.

personally missing MM hurts more from an optics stand point that a team standpoint
i feel more confident that mario can make due or even better
and theres next year to stack more elite lineman

the concern is the lack of DTs
we cant keep stacking body types we have to start stacking game changers
missing folorosho will hurt much more from a roster building stand point
Go see an optometrist. Hopefully they will be an optomistic optometrist. Then go see a psychiatrist for a change to your meds.

I'll leave the gynecologist comment for someone less distinguished than myself.....

OT is interesting cause entering this spring I would have said both Congdon and Ervin should get shots at OT FIRST before moving to guard. But Congdon looks like he gained a **** load of mass and has been working in at Guard. Idk if he has the movement to stick at OT, or honest even what his actual weight is. I've just seen his picture and he looked huge. If he has the feet to be OT Id 100% be looking for him to be competitive for RT next yr.

The interesting thing nobody likely considers is if Samson Okunlola decides to return. Its entirely possible he basically follows the EXACT path Matt McCoy just took - 2 yrs as LG (splitting reps) then moving to RT. Samson can return another year if he wants to. And may see a lot of value in raising his draft stock in doing so if staff thinks he can play OT at a high level after McCoy leaves.

Ervin is a total TBD given his injury. And obviously Meriweather should be assumed to be in the mix especially for next season. And apparently staff likes Wilkerson but I think he's prob on same level as Minaya at Guard. Where like it'd probably be fine if we played him, but he's still another yr or two away...

Either way I'm not having any concern at Guard. Especially not after this upcoming recruiting class if we land Jatori Williams and Sean Tatum.

Center next yr is either SJ or Buchanan sliding in or portal. I don't expect that to be a big deal...

So in summation, losing Mathews isn't close to the end of the world. Obviously landing him would be a massive Win. But if we pivot to like Sam-Epelle and go all in on landing top DLineman (NEED 2 top Edges and Muhammad at DT since we miss on Folorunsho imo!)
Good stuff

Center I think will just be portal and I think that’s actually a good thing

As good as our OL coaching and recruiting it’s still a crap shoot getting a true center. SJ is shockingly small. Maybe he turns into something maybe not, but Mario will just land another OL Quarterback in the portal I see no need to worry about that either

We can pretty much get any center we want in the portal we’ve proven that

Just keep recruiting these freaks of nature to move around tackle and guard and it’s all good

Every year since Mario took over the board obsesses over a few names and lives or dies by those names

All I know for sure is Mario’s recruiting board is significantly bigger than our brains can comprehend

Justin Scott committed to OSU. Cantwell was headed to Oregon or UGA. Lightfoot was OSU. Lowe was committed to USC. Blount flipped to FSU. Toney reclassified and was headed elsewhere. **** we just took a 5 star DB from Cali committed to UGA. Anyone have him on our board?

I get NIL deals change the game but we are playing for a natty again this year it’ll work out

Yeah Guard given the bodies and talent we accumulate, I genuinely think will never be an issue. Its the type of position that is simply the easiest to fill and given our overall OL recruiting and coaching is just never going to be a real issue. A question entering the year? Sure. Like ultimately Buchanan we don't actually know if he's going to be good/great. But I have zero worries now or going forward.

Center like you said we've proven portal success there. Also I'd point out that Center is likely the cheapest Portal position on offense? And the type of guys who play center usually are the smartest in the room types given all the calls they usually have to make. And the build requirements are substantially less than any other OLine position. Anyone 6'5" or less, who is smart and quick can have success. That's why I view Center as the ONLY possible position SJ could ever play here. Genuinely don't know why he is receiving any snaps at guard. If he ever actually plays Guard in an important moment I'd truly be shocked. And then I just don't see Woodrow/Sparks being ready next yr. Maybe not even the year after either tbh. I continue to think Buchanan would be VERY Interesting at Center. Obviously if SJ stepped up at Center and Buchanan stuck at Guard that'd be great. But I can really see this yr the best ol having Buchanan at Center with Meriweather/Congdon/whoever at RG...

But like next yr if we had:
LT: Cantwell
LG: Congdon / Pickett
C: Buchanan or SJ / Woodrow or Sparks
RG: Buchanan or Meriweather / Ervin
RT: Samson / Wilkerson or Meriweather or Hawks

And in 28 you have open competition at RT between Wilkerson/Congdon/Ervin/Hawks.... Loser plays Guard (or portals if Wilkerson)

@jsy @JADood Get your grubby little fingers ready to type away angrily on Friday
Not taking a side, though I agree with the MarioBros here and I thank you. Perfect call out. Specific to the posters mope posting as opposed to “mopes” in general, most of whom are like whatever, we’ll never have less than a good OL under Mario, get some more DLs and do what you do on the OL, Mongo.

Will preface this by saying TrumpyCane thinks A&M is the pick but to play devil's advocate are there any signs he will pick the good guys

1. Witlong has already hedged a little bit
2. Had plenty of chances to already commit to A&M
3. Believe we are the only school with an OV set for May 29th, which is our biggest OV weekend?

Yeah thats all TrumpyCane got

Let him go there if he wants but before he gets on the plane ask him who has won the last six out of seven from the Saggies. They ain’t beating us no time soon with or without him. Maybe y’all didn’t see Mario’s face the last 7 games of the season. He is not playing nice anymore. I already got my room in Vegas. So, all y’all mopin’

With SJ it's not even just the size, but his continued struggles to consistently snap the football. The lack of size compounds the problem, especially because it's not like the coaches can say, "Well, you really struggle to snap the football. Let's put you at guard." He's too small for that. So it's center or bust.

All that to say I agree we're going portal for center next season (and I'm still a little surprised we didn't pull the trigger on one this off-season).

I'm not too surprised we didn't get portal center this yr. Ultimately we have to remember this staff started Rodriguez to open the season against UF on the road in 2024. That's kinda a statement. And he's just another yr more experienced and has had as long/longer in this system than anyone so I'm sure they trust him with all the mental aspects.

Funny thing is that by my accounting, I actually think Rodriguez could absolutely have ANOTHER yr of eligibility after this one. He's had 2 season ending injuries plus a regular Redshirt. So he could play 7 yrs. This is his 6th. Don't think it's likely, but certainly possible tbh.

Fully agree regarding SJ but I'd just say, he's still constantly practicing at Guard. Dude should literally only take snaps if hes also snapping. Simple as that. Best way to get better is to constantly be practicing it. Him taking snaps at guard was fine last yr. This yr his entire focus needs to be center. No prob with the TE/FB snaps, but OLine snaps he needs to always be snapping....

Also not for nothing but seems like the whole Elko vs Mario thing that gained some traction after we beat them is legit

Yes A&M is gunning for the #1 class but I think these two genuinely dislike eachother

Or maybe Elko being in his 37th trimester is just messing with his hormones

It is common knowledge that Cantwell is going to be our LT for the next 3 years. kids who are highly rated no they won't have a shot at LT until he leaves. that affects decisions. thats they money position on the OL.
I think dude just doesn’t want to stay home and play for UM. We’ve had local players doing this since forever. There’s always going to be a Buster Rhymes or Marvin Jones.

We’re national in our recruiting. People are putting too much emphasis on local losses. How about the 5 star locals we just took from USC and Ole Miss???

And on the O line of all areas, people are concerned??? 🤣

Would love for him to stay home, but if he doesn’t, we will be fine, in reality and from optics. MM will not make or break us on the LOS. It wouldn’t surprise me if Mario hasn’t already told him he is not guaranteed anything here and is selling him the Samson O development path as opposed to Cici or JC path to immediate playing time.

I could see 8&4 basically guaranteeing him a starting spot as a freshman, whether it be at LT, RT or G. I honestly don’t think MM is concerned about his position.
