Heatherman and Dawson BOTH extended

We threw 436 passes in 2023.

Tyler Van Dyke threw 76% of them.
Emory Williams threw 16% of them.
Jacurri Brown threw 7% of them.

That team finished 28th in yards per play, and 38th in scoring offense.

Dawson is very, very good at his job. I got incredibly frustrated with him at times last year, as we all did. I'm not going to go into all that again, I've written a **** novel on here about it. But at the end of the day, if he left, he would be a P5 offensive coordinator elsewhere INSTANTLY. He knows what he's doing.

This program is on a path to being the best not only on the field but how we’re perceived by everyone on the outside as well. We’re structured to go on a run and of course it’s hard to win it or even make it every season, but we’re gonna be knocking on the door especially if we stay in the acc.

with basically the same team from 2022

If the board read about an OC that improved roughly the same offense about 90 spots in one year and then when he got some talent obliterated all of the schools records they’d be lining up to hire him probably as head coach

He’s a good OC and he’s gonna cook with Mensah

edit to add: happy for this move either way. both coordinators proved good enough to bring us to the NC game and i'd rather have continuity at those spots than new names all the time

Dawson and Heatherman were never going to leave us for Equal roles elsewhere. They’d only leave for Better roles - aka HC jobs. In which case there will be no buyout aid think. So this basically does nothing more than increase their pay and give the coaches guarantees that they have a place here as long as they want it

This right here. It's a pay raise and helps with recruiting. Sure, it might make them being hired away a bit more cost prohibitive but beyond that, it's more symbolic, imo. Either way, great for all involved - congrats to those guys.

Now, next up, extending Mario, I'm guessing
 
Dawson has proven that with a top flight QB (Ward) he’s very good. Well he has a top flight QB this year. I expect 40ppg. And if that’s the case, we walk into the playoffs undefeated and a #1 seed.

Dawson has the more "traditional" resume, and I'm very surprised we've been able to hold onto him this long. I'm sure some decent schools have inquired. He's 48, he's been a coordinator in and out of the P4 level for a decade.

Pete Thamel said his interest was from NFL DC openings rather than college HCs like Dawson.

That seems to hold true based upon recent NFL trends. Only took Al Golden three years at Notre Dame to get a NFL DC gig. Look at the Ravens’ new OC — didn’t even play college football and became the youngest OC at 29. Chris O Leary was hired from Western Michigan to the Chargers at 34. Davis Webb, early 30s, is OC for the Broncos.

The Dolphins DC was a linebacker coach at Boston College when Mario was hired. Zach Etheridge is five years older than the DC of the Cardinals. Winning has a lot of advantages to it. Speeds things up. Heck, even Jedd Fisch became a NFL OC after a 7-5 Miami season.

I think the fact that Hetherman was Cignetti’s DC prior to being a Rutgers LB coach even made him more attractive, pause, to NFL organizations. Feels like the NFL as a whole has changed their normal hiring practices
 
Heatherman is the successful nutcase DC that I always wanted to be at Miami. Instead those guys would always go to SEC schools.

That team should have been a 9-10 win team easily. If we just take a knee we got 8, then dude proceeded to play like a mental midget the rest of the way lol
 
I keep tryna tell yall. Being an OC or DC is the better gig than being a HC in the NIL era. Congrats to both and lets go get a few rings in the next few years!

I would pay them like head coaches at a mid-level program. They'll make that back with one playoff win.
