Golden WQAM Signing Day Interview

LOL at blaming the offense for TWO CONSECUTIVE YEARS OF THE WORST DEFENSE IN UM HISTORY.

You can't make this stuff up.

He didn't, and you just did.

The problem isn't him pointing out the offensive flaws. It is the way he does it. Don't use it as a deflection. When your asked about the offense's issue, go ahead and answer. Too much blame. Not enough acceptance.

He has readily acknowledged the issues on defense. That doesn't change the fact that the offense isn't helping.

Did he mention why he lost Powell, Bethel, and TV down the stretch? Did he discuss why he went O-fer on the top WR in our back yard? How about how in the world did he miss out on 3 top RBs in our own back yard? What about his "expertise" in flipping; did he explain why he couldn't do that this yr? Or finally, did he mention why he went from saying that he would sign 30 kids this yr, to all of sudden only being able to offer 1 or 2 more?? I use to support AG, but now it's becoming a vicious cycle.

Maybe it's not Al; maybe it's our facilities. Maybe it's not having our own stadium or maybe it's a matter of kids not wanting to play in front of only 30-40k fans in a stadium that fits 75k. Maybe our college football experience is not something kids are drawn to here. I think back to when we had the OB....did we have this type of problem recruiting kids?? I recall the problem started happening shortly after the OB closed down. So what can Al do to put ppl in the stadium so that ppl r not bored @ our gms?? Winning is always a cure, but something more has to be done. It's one of two things we can do, it's either A) this admin break a very friendly lease w/ Craplife Stadium and move somewhere closer (i.e. Marlins park, or do some renovation at Tropical Stadium to make it college friendly) or B. pull a Howard Schellenberg and make our home games cheap to the entire community to get them to support our boys....either way something has to give.
I don't think it's all AG....we just don't offer that type of atmosphere that a OSU, Mich, ND, FSU, Clemson, or UF have to offer!!
I've heard the argument that city of Miami, primarily South Beach, has so much to offer and fans get caught up in every day activities, it's not like it use to be...I'm sorry, I live in L.A and there is waaaaaay more to do in L.A. than South Beach and yet USC sells out every single game in a crappy stadium in one of the hardest neighborhoods in L.A (South Central) w/ the Lakers playing right down the street from them, car shows are constantly down the street from them, along w/ a 5 star hotel that offers it's on entertainment, movie theatres, and more importantly w/ HOLLYWOOD 8 minutes away from them; yet, on Saturday, they still sell out their home games. UCLA keeps a pack house as well, and their stadium is further from their campus w/ worst traffic conditions than SunLife from UM's campus. Something has to change to lure these kids to us. It can't just be about our past....yes a winning product will be the main key, but we gotta start supporting these boys more at the stadium. I try to make at least 4 games a yr each yr and it's funny how empty Sun Life is...you can hear the kids talk to each other!!! So think, if you are a 4-5 star recruit, do you really want to come out to mediocre fan base who you can barely hear you chant your name?? Of course you don't.
We can't keep living in the past, we as a fan base, have to start supporting these kids win or lose and I bet you, when kids see our games on TV and see how packed our stadium is, they will flock back to us. Too many pics of HS kids yawning and tweeting during a game w/ like 50 empty seats around them. Not a good look...so yes, some of the blame is on AG and his scheme, some of it is falling upon Shalalah and Blake not going hard in the paint at moving to an established closer stadium that fits our fan base or rennovating a closer stadium, and some of it falls upon us as fans who complain all day long, but ain't supporting them at home games either to draw recruits.

The second sentence out of his mouth shouldn't be "oh by the way the offense isn't good at this either" Does he blame the defense for not creating enough short fields for the offense when the offense is struggling? The only reason they won any ACC games was because of the offense. As image conscious as he is he should be aware that rubs people the wrong way.

That fact he got after the offense for not matching Duke score for score when his defense gave up 48 pts is just awful.

LA has had what, 2 pro teams walk out on them?

They don't sell out either.

Said the defense has improved. No longer relying on freshman.

Am I missing someone?

Aside from Burns used sparingly near the end of the season, and AQM on 3rd downs, what freshmen played significant time, let alone were relied on?

Corn Elder
how good can Corn be???

I think he had the athletic ability to play at a high level. If he ain't get hurt he would have made a jump. Think Sam Shields with 3 years to learn it instead of 1

That rite there is three **** long.

Golden is the best coach in the country when it comes to excuses.

I start thinking this is really true until I start to look at the roster and see names like Highsmith, Cornilieous, Rodgers, Gaines, Green, Cain, etc... Then I just scratch my head and wonder how the **** did we win 9 games. All those guys were terrible. Top that with the fact that we were playing 6-7 scholarship players short and had to fill some roster spots with transfers and walk ons.

So in a way, I hope not to hear excuses, but then I do see the light at the end of the tunnel.

No, he doesn't blame the defense for creating enough short fields because he knows that they aren't capable of it. When the strength of your team is supposed to be your senior QB and experienced OL, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect them to help out the obviously terrible defense. It's a team game, and sometimes you need one side of the ball to help carry the weaker side. Seattle's defense carried them to the Super Bowl title, Peyton Manning got the Broncos to the game...neither team gets there without the strength of their team covering for the weaknesses. F$U is an exception, IMO...they were really good on both sides of the ball.

They don't sell out either.

The pro teams left b/c of greed and they were both transplants. Al moved the Raiders BACK to Oakland where they were from b/c he wanted a better stadium and used Oakland as leverage. He tried to do the same thing again before he died by trying to force the city of Oakland to give him another stadium or he would move them back to LA. The Raiders stayed sold out in LA no matter how bad they were. The Rams was all Georgie's plot. She got a sweet deal from the city of St. Louis and she hopped on it immediately. Neither left due to support of their teams or selling tickets.

The man does give good press conference. Everything sounded logical. I'm excited. Go Canes!

Most important skill for a head coach is to SELL. You have to sell your philosophy as a leader if you are going to be successful. Everything you teach is a sales job.

I have never, and I mean never, seen so many negative people who love to wallow in each others misery as we have on this board. What a sad way to live. I suppose some can only lift themselves up out of their miserable existence by tearing down others.

I suspect we have a lot of 15 to 25 yearolds coming on here whose knowledge of football is very limited. Why don't you join the 35,000 of us who actually go to canes games. If all you are going to do is cry and moan (I am not talking about rational discussion and disagreement) Please go back to canestime or canesport, We will all be better off for it. Many sound like a group of 80 year old frustrated ninnies who are always ****ed at the world.

He's not coaching you. He's coaching his entire team. He wants to emphasize that it's a team game, and they need to help each other out. When one unit is poor, and everyone knows it, the other side has to do its part mitigate those deficiencies. Not a bad lesson to teach.

By the way, nobody with half a brain believes that he was saying that the offense was the main reason that the defense was poor. Despite the fact that you want him to, it's not smart to throw half of his team under the bus.

One side of the ball shouldn't have to make up for the other side being historically bad. How many points should that offense have been asked to score? 40? 45? Why isn't his defense capable of being average? That is his fault. Talk about lack of talent, but he certainly didn't do anything to maximize what he had. I gotta expect this guy to outrecruit everybody to have an above average defense? He can't make his team defense better than what they are as individuals? Pathetic.
