Golden WQAM Signing Day Interview

He didn't, and you just did.

The problem isn't him pointing out the offensive flaws. It is the way he does it. Don't use it as a deflection. When your asked about the offense's issue, go ahead and answer. Too much blame. Not enough acceptance.

He has readily acknowledged the issues on defense. That doesn't change the fact that the offense isn't helping.

The second sentence out of his mouth shouldn't be "oh by the way the offense isn't good at this either" Does he blame the defense for not creating enough short fields for the offense when the offense is struggling? The only reason they won any ACC games was because of the offense. As image conscious as he is he should be aware that rubs people the wrong way.

That fact he got after the offense for not matching Duke score for score when his defense gave up 48 pts is just awful.

He's not coaching you. He's coaching his entire team. He wants to emphasize that it's a team game, and they need to help each other out. When one unit is poor, and everyone knows it, the other side has to do its part mitigate those deficiencies. Not a bad lesson to teach.

By the way, nobody with half a brain believes that he was saying that the offense was the main reason that the defense was poor. Despite the fact that you want him to, it's not smart to throw half of your team under the bus.

He is responsible for it all. He is responsible for mitigating deficiencies.

Who knows what this guy believes when he is selling that line of bullcrap about improvements on defense the Monday after the Penn State debacle.

Did he mention why he lost Powell, Bethel, and TV down the stretch? Did he discuss why he went O-fer on the top WR in our back yard? How about how in the world did he miss out on 3 top RBs in our own back yard? What about his "expertise" in flipping; did he explain why he couldn't do that this yr? Or finally, did he mention why he went from saying that he would sign 30 kids this yr, to all of sudden only being able to offer 1 or 2 more?? I use to support AG, but now it's becoming a vicious cycle.
OR
Maybe it's not Al; maybe it's our facilities. Maybe it's not having our own stadium or maybe it's a matter of kids not wanting to play in front of only 30-40k fans in a stadium that fits 75k. Maybe our college football experience is not something kids are drawn to here. I think back to when we had the OB....did we have this type of problem recruiting kids?? I recall the problem started happening shortly after the OB closed down. So what can Al do to put ppl in the stadium so that ppl r not bored @ our gms?? Winning is always a cure, but something more has to be done. It's one of two things we can do, it's either A) this admin break a very friendly lease w/ Craplife Stadium and move somewhere closer (i.e. Marlins park, or do some renovation at Tropical Stadium to make it college friendly) or B. pull a Howard Schellenberg and make our home games cheap to the entire community to get them to support our boys....either way something has to give.
I don't think it's all AG....we just don't offer that type of atmosphere that a OSU, Mich, ND, FSU, Clemson, or UF have to offer!!
I've heard the argument that city of Miami, primarily South Beach, has so much to offer and fans get caught up in every day activities, it's not like it use to be...I'm sorry, I live in L.A and there is waaaaaay more to do in L.A. than South Beach and yet USC sells out every single game in a crappy stadium in one of the hardest neighborhoods in L.A (South Central) w/ the Lakers playing right down the street from them, car shows are constantly down the street from them, along w/ a 5 star hotel that offers it's on entertainment, movie theatres, and more importantly w/ HOLLYWOOD 8 minutes away from them; yet, on Saturday, they still sell out their home games. UCLA keeps a pack house as well, and their stadium is further from their campus w/ worst traffic conditions than SunLife from UM's campus. Something has to change to lure these kids to us. It can't just be about our past....yes a winning product will be the main key, but we gotta start supporting these boys more at the stadium. I try to make at least 4 games a yr each yr and it's funny how empty Sun Life is...you can hear the kids talk to each other!!! So think, if you are a 4-5 star recruit, do you really want to come out to mediocre fan base who you can barely hear you chant your name?? Of course you don't.
We can't keep living in the past, we as a fan base, have to start supporting these kids win or lose and I bet you, when kids see our games on TV and see how packed our stadium is, they will flock back to us. Too many pics of HS kids yawning and tweeting during a game w/ like 50 empty seats around them. Not a good look...so yes, some of the blame is on AG and his scheme, some of it is falling upon Shalalah and Blake not going hard in the paint at moving to an established closer stadium that fits our fan base or rennovating a closer stadium, and some of it falls upon us as fans who complain all day long, but ain't supporting them at home games either to draw recruits.

No, he doesn't blame the defense for creating enough short fields because he knows that they aren't capable of it. When the strength of your team is supposed to be your senior QB and experienced OL, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect them to help out the obviously terrible defense. It's a team game, and sometimes you need one side of the ball to help carry the weaker side. Seattle's defense carried them to the Super Bowl title, Peyton Manning got the Broncos to the game...neither team gets there without the strength of their team covering for the weaknesses. F$U is an exception, IMO...they were really good on both sides of the ball.

One side of the ball shouldn't have to make up for the other side being historically bad. How many points should that offense have been asked to score? 40? 45? Why isn't his defense capable of being average? That is his fault. Talk about lack of talent, but he certainly didn't do anything to maximize what he had. I gotta expect this guy to outrecruit everybody to have an above average defense? He can't make his team defense better than what they are as individuals? Pathetic.

The strength of your team should be able to help out the weaker side. That's Football 101. I think AG would more than agree with you that the defense has major issues, and that it's his job to fix it. I don't know if he can do that or not, but I do know that his job depends on getting it done.

okay I got thru that.....took some time...Valid points but here is the big answer..no coaches anywhere in the country will name kids after they lose them. We ****ed up for sure on KEY Miami guys and nothing shows or tells me it gets any better in 2015 class in south Fl...we can hire every HS school coach in Dade and kids are going to get lured away...I repped ya for the effort

He himself admitted that they have the players they want/need now.

Get it ******* done then.

Going 3 and out over and over and over again, when they aren't turning the ball over, doesn't help you score points either. Converting less than 40% on 3rd down in ACC play...not good for scoring points. The offense scored less than 27 points per game in ACC play (defense and STs were responsible for some scores). Look, the defense sucks. We all know it. AG knows it. A senior QB and experienced OL should've been better than it was, which would've helped the defense. That isn't some outrageous claim.

How much better should they have been? How much better could they have been to protect that defense? You're talking about limiting possessions at this point because you don't have expectations of the D actually stopping a competent offense. Which is an indictment of that side of the ball anyway. Just because we don't know what it feels like to have a competent defense doesn't mean other teams in the ACC have no knowledge of it. They weren't going to allow our offense to go up and down the field consistently

WTF does a "senior QB" even mean anymore when freshmen are winning the Heisman? Either you can play or you can't. Morris can't. Just because Morris was overrated going into the year doesn't mean he didn't perform at the level he should've. You guys have been talking about this O-line for a couple of years. Maybe they weren't that good? Is Shane McDermott a guy you want anchoring a good offensive line. Henderson can't avoid smoking weed. We had talent on offense. Not elite in the places you're touting.

Just my opinion, but the offense should've been a lot better than it was. Morris had a good junior season, and the expectations for improvement his senior year were reasonable. We had a veteran OL with a lot of talent and depth and should've been able to sustain some drives against teams like Wake, Pitt, Duke, Loserville. I don't think anyone would argue that our talent on offense was a lot better than on defense. Heisman winning rapeist also had one **** of a defense to bail him out when he struggled.

I've honestly never encountered a head coach who is as smooth as Al Golden with his words. He's the ultimate used car salesman.

I hate this MF'er, but I lol'd at the bolded.

I got issues with Golden, but when Omar trashes him it makes me want to defend Al. Omar is such an idiot.

LA has had what, 2 pro teams walk out on them?

They don't sell out either.

An both USC and UCLA would have killed to have our recruiting class.

Morris entered the final three games of his Junior Year at 12 TDs and 7 INT. Lighting up USF,UVA and Duke for 9 TDs and no picks doesn't mean he had a good junior year. He completed less than 60% of his passes as well.

LOL, ok. Whatever. Fire Golden, hire Coley (if we can keep Bama from snatching him up first).

I'm not so sure about that man, I intern at Ucla working every game and attendance was poor all season, basketball games are laughable sometimes. USC has a way better fan base
