GOAT RB - Vilma tweet

Oh I give you that but IMO it's still impressive no matter what context you put it in.

I am definitely not saying it's not impressive. It's just a bit of a statistical aberration that would regress to the mean before long. Which it did, as he averaged 5.7 YPC over his college career, which is still **** good injuries notwithstanding. It's excellent when you consider the knees. He's at a 4.6 YPC in the NFL, which is very good, but not elite.

That said, it's hard for me to say ANYTHING negative about Gore. He is a remarkable human being.

LMAO OK I'm crying? You were the one who threw a temper tantrum. But thanks for sharing a gif of you.

Simpson was Special as well...although he had a very good OL and a FB (Braxton) who'd knock your teeth out...

I realize he wasn't in Sanders...Payton...etc's class....but I saw Mercury Morris rip off a 75yd run against the Pats in 73 or 74 that I've always felt was one of the Greatest runs I ever saw....

Payton retired as the all time leading rusher. AND the all time leading receiver out of the backfield. Let that sink in. Say it again. Payton retired as the all time leading rusher. AND the all time leading receiver out of the backfield.

He did almost all that on awful teams, behind awful lines, with no talented QBs or skill posiition guys around him.

Oh, as you mention, perhaps the goat blocker at RB.

Oh, despite your comment, that he was literally the third string QB and backup punter is relevant. He actually played those roles in games when called upon.

Walter Payton was the best all around player ever in the nfl. But he also was the all time leading rusher and receiver out of the backfield at the time he retired.

G.O.A.T.

Yep, I let it sink in. But you didn't tell me anything I didn't know. I said Allen is the most complete running back I ever saw and I stand by that, and I saw both their careers. I don't expect to change your mind and nothing you provided changed mine. We can disagree without the final result being one of us simply yields. Because that is not going to happen, right?

When you begin your post as you do, you make it clear your mind isn’t open to change, so not sure it’s worthwhile to discuss this. You’re entitled to your opinion, but that it’s yours doesn’t make it logical. I am still not sure why anyone would think Marcus Allen was a more ‘complete’ back than Walter Payton. Walter had 7x first team all pros to 2x for Allen. Way more rushing yards and better ypc. Close in receiving stats and walter retired as the all time leading receiver out of the backfield during a pass unfriendly era, on a team without a QB for most of his time there. Allen wasn’t a better blocker. So I’m left with you feel like you feel, and that’s cool.

Yeah, we'll have to agree that you disagree with just about every avid football observer out there. I don't begrudge your right to your own opinion.

I will say this about Allen. He was the best RB I've seen that looked nothing like a RB. He was tall, skinny, and had a long neck. With his build, I'm amazed he could survive one season, let alone a Hall of Fame career. ****, he wasn't even straight line fast. What he did have was superb vision, which is virtually a requirement to be a great RB.

Marcus Allen is the most complete running back I've ever seen. He gets lost in the conversation because he didn't exist in the internet era and because Al Davis basically took his prime.

Name the back that, as a package, runs in the open field, pass protects, gets open and catches out of the backfield, runs between the tackles, AND becomes a deadly short yardage back better than Allen.

Jim Brown is the Goat IMO, regardless of position.

  1. Jim Brown
  2. Barry Sanders (OL wasn’t nearly as bad as people say, it’s just used to try and enhance his legacy, which he’s great enough that he doesn’t need it.)
  3. Walter Payton
  4. OJ Simpson
  5. Earl Campbell or Marcus Allen

Lomas Brown was close to HOF level. 6x all pro.

All around: Payton, Faulk, Tomlinson
Pure running: Sanders, E. Smith
Fullback model: Brown, Campbell, Bettis
Next: ****erson, OJ, Peterson, Edge, Martin
Almost: Bo, Sayers

Obviously not talking GOAT here but if we're just talking blast to watch then give me these two. I bet both (along with Herschel Walker) still could punch it in from the 3 yd line on 4th on goal with the game on the line:

*obviously my childhood was shaped by Tecmo Bowl.

Payton was elusive also. I'm sorry but nobody will even convince me Sanders was better than Payton.

I'm not trying to convince you.
Payton was a great, great back.
As I said in another post, I could be convinced Payton was better.

No denying. Bo is the man....

Actually this thread demonstrates that there is widespread disagreement among avid football observers. I think that was the original point.
