Gametime Weather

During the ND game there was some debate here about the NCAA’s lightning delay policy.

I was curious, since I didn’t recall this happening much in the .70’s and 80’s.

Sure enough the NCAA didn’t adopt a lightning delay policy until 1997.

In 2007 they broadened it to 6 miles and a 30 minute delay per strike.

In 2014 it was again broadened to an 8 miles radius with corresponding 30 minute delay.

I think it’s kid of a one size fits all that doesn’t conform to SFLA weather very well. Our summer/fall thunderstorms are generally fast moving and an 8 miles strike within 8 miles can be in Bimini before 30 minutes is over.

90+ minute delay last weekend vs USF. How many in the crowd left? Looked like a lot!
