G5 Representative in the College Football Playoff is the equivalent to DEI.

It’s a hard fact. College football having some G5 team be part of this playoff and taking an automatic spot is ludicrous.

UCF and Cincinnati had a good run a few years ago but using them as “We must include a G5 team” is the college football equivalent of DEI.

Only a real solid, undefeated G5 team that has a solid resume should only be considered on that merit for the playoff.

P4 teams shouldn’t be losing a spot to a G5 unless they are some kind of special team that EARNS it on the field. Not just award a spot to include them.
💯
That is the perfect analysis to be quite honest!!!!

They have to withdraw automatic qualifier

Whatever team makes it
They will be 25 point dog on road which sets up for ****** playoff game for everyone!

not wrong

Playoffs should be shrunk. Make the regular season more intense like it used to be. College football had the best regular season in sports. Every game meant everything. One loss could end your national championship hopes. Now a team like Notre Dame can start 0-2 and cruise to the playoffs beating up cupcakes. It’s just minor league nfl now.
I disagree
Get it to 24 teams then every single team that actually has a chance is in the tournament and it will be decided on the field, not by bull****, politics or pedigree of Blue Bloods

If you shrink it, you’re just guaranteeing the Blue Bloods get in over any other team that’s the way it’s been forever

Yeah, I think that’s what the legal defense would be, and the CFP is just hoping that one measly spot would appease the G5.

It’s an incredibly weak argument, however. Everything that the NCAA, ESPN, and the CFP, and certain conferences have been doing over the past couple decades is ripe with antitrust issues. Why no one has been talking about it is beyond me. The only thing I can think of is that everyone has been distracted by the House settlement.
Yeah, I agree with all you said. I think the lower conference schools would possibly fear the top 4 conferences from breaking away from them when a lot of them need those 1-3 OOC games with the big boys to help fund their athletic program. Those big paychecks to travel to their stadium and get beat up helps a lot.

So instead of just having Tulane in the playoffs, you want to have Tulane, North Texas, James Madison, Virginia, Georgia Tech, etc.

That is not the playoff format we need.

From a purist perspective, that only works with legitimate round robin play.

Without such a format, playoffs need to be expanded to appropriate competition level to ensure it's "settled on the field" in greatest extent possible.

Right now we don't have that.

I'm a fan of Lashlee's recent "Top 4 from each league is in" proposal. Take the beauty contest out of it completely and put forth a broad, objective standard for teams to meet.

So they were a good team.
Yes, I think they were a good team for a G5 school and deserved to be in the playoffs last year. I was responding the poster who said they were a bad team outside of Jeanty. My point was if Boise State was actually not very good, that says a lot about the other G5 schools, because Boise was heads and shoulders above all other G5 schools.

And I don't believe there is a G5 school this year that is close to last year's Boise team, yet one mediocre FBS team in a G5 conference will be an automatic qualifier in the playoffs.

So, the best G5 team last year, Boise, was actually a bad team aside from Jeanty. Says a lot about the G5 schools. There isn't a G5 team this year that can touch that Boise team from last year.

That's why G5 schools shouldn't have an automatic qualifier. The best G5 team most years is an average P4 team. Last year's Boise team and 2017 UCF were not the norm. They both deserved to be in the playoffs. No G5 team this year belongs in the playoffs.

You totally missed the point. Also, if Duke somehow gets in the playoff by winning the ACC, Tulane 100% deserves to be in over them. They already played and Tulane dominated them.

Be careful what you wish for. They remove the automatic qualifiers and see how quickly it officially becomes a SEC vs B1G Invitational.

The fact is the G5 should be its own division of football in the NCAA and not part of the FBS. 136 FBS schools is ridiculous.

Great point, and a huge reason for them to keep from rocking the boat.

I do think that CFB can keep that “tradition” (for lack of a better word) intact even if the G5 is split into its own subdivision.

Not trying to be a wise guy here, but what was your point? That the current playoff system is flawed? Yes, I agree.

I also don't agree that Duke should be in as the ACC qualifier if they end up winning the conference. And even if Duke somehow wins the ACC, that doesn't mean Tulane deserves to be in just because one crappy team beat another crappy team that somehow won their conference.

I don't know the answer. Take the playoffs back to 4 teams. Maybe have 6 teams at max. I think a couple other posters have suggested that.
