I don't like the striker position, but where is he gonna go? USF? Illinois? His film nor production has been all that

I hope he stays here but ultimately the striker is the nickel corner. We just want a bigger DB who can make open field tackles and play the run well there.

Being good in coverage also comes with the territory...
 
I like the position, but in my opinion what they are asked to do should change... ur setting guys up for failure to ask that position ( bigger safeties) to cover slot guys. To me it needs to be to cover RB’s, TE’s and bigger WR’s.
 
He played corner in high school but he didn’t last long at corner in Miami. There’s been a lot of talk about Smith pushing for the starting spot.
The striker spot is the ideal place to showcase your skills if you’re multi dimensional. The NFL is desperate for guys who can play man coverage and defend the run. Football is all about positional versatility now. Run stuffing linebackers and safeties who don’t contribute against the run are a dying breed.

Just what I said. They gave him garbage time at best at safety and after he made a mistake or two his freshman year, they moved him to striker. I can’t be the only one who saw how most of our safeties take at least a full season to really make an impact. JJ is one of the only kids who came in and got it pretty quick.

Gurvan has flashed but hasn’t been perfect and he’s had all the chances in the world. He was an elite prospect, and you’re telling me Gil was supposed to put it together before him? By the way this isn’t a knock on Gurvan, he should be starting there I’m just making a comparison.

I just don’t understand how you put a kid who’s too stiff to play CB, and struggles in man coverage, at a position that gets targeted the most on our defense.

To me this just screams a repeat of Dallas to safety. The coaches did it out of necessity and it didn’t help the team or the kid. Maybe Gil will prove me wrong and show out, I just think his money position is at safety and that’s where he should be.

Honestly I bet Keontra is out playing Gilbert.

Striker is a more natural position for him and he's a more physical player

Frierson out of high school seemed more like a FS to me not a close to the line of scrimmage guy

I think the only person that I can remember looked like an in the box safety at times when playing the striker was when Jaquan Johnson was playing under Manny’s version of this defense. But Bakers defense is just a big Nickel.

Striker is just there to get a quicker guy on the field against spread offenses rather than another LB. Even Bama has a "striker" in their defense.
 
No surprise to me that Smith is pushing for reps. This is what competition is all about. Gil has the inside lane to a starting position and he's frustrated? Sorry but I'm not sorry for him. Beat out Smith and start. (or Hall or Bolden or Carter if you don't like Striker).
