Franklin Fired at PSU

Cignetti makes $8.3 mil with another $1 mil a year for not leaving, $1 mil for winning the big 10 and $700k for each playoff round appearance. There’s also a Mark Cuban factor. How much is Penn State willing to pay him?

Crazy world.

Not one, but TWO terrible, no good, very bad, awful fired UM coaches -- two of the worse we've ever had -- are being bandied about for one of the top jobs in cfb.

Eh... no one I know is seriously suggesting Al Golden for the job. But I was floored when both Bud Elliott and Joel Klatt suggested Manny Diaz as a serious option and a good hire.

What kind of bizarro world are we living in?

It’s Cignetti or bust for them. That’s a fact.

The more I read about it, the stuff about him hating PSU makes sense. His dad coached at Pitt, his brother coached at Pitt, Curt was on staff at Pitt multiples times.

I just don’t see him leaving Indiana during a probable playoff run to go to Penn St. Penn St needs someone before early signing day in early December while Indiana first playoff will be right before Christmas if they don’t get a bye.

If they go a run then he would miss beginning of the new transfer portal window

I agree but if they are looking for a home run, Cignetti is the guy. That’s all I’m saying. It’s him or bust for them. I expect them to make a big push for him, doesn’t mean they’ll get them, but I expect them to make a big push.

I made a big push this morning.....lucky for me, my second cup of coffee got an assist as I pushed the puck past the goalie.

12 seasons.
3 ended 7-6
1 ended 4-5
1 ended 3-3
5/12 mid-losing seasons falls into the UNACCEPTABLE category by CiS standards. However, there's plenty of dudes n this post alone saying he's a good coach.

James Franklin's record against ranked opponents at Penn State is 15-28. Specifically, his record against top-10 teams is 4-21, and he is 1-18 against top-10 Big Ten teams. For perspective, Mario is 12-18 (career) against AP Top 25 teams. Six of the 18 losses were at FIU.

I didn't think people were putting this guy in legendary status. The reality is that he took over a program that was absolutely dead coming off the biggest scandal in CFB history and managed to win 11 games in his first 6 on 3 different occasions. No too shabby. Prior to this year, the team has been a double digit winning team the past several years. Is he the best coach in CFB? No, but to win like he did at PSU and at Vandy is pretty **** good.

It's ridiculous that THEY'VE fired him yet they're requiring him to look for another job.

Like, how do you even police that? "Yeah Florida offered me an interview, but it wasn't for me. Now if you'll excuse me you're cutting into my afternoon tv time".
A duty to mitigate damages is a common contractual provision. Similar to a tenant leaving before the end of the lease--Landlord needs to try to find another tenant to offset damages.

The way some narratives are being crafted, "who can they possibly get better" is a touch overstated.

He elevated them from a Pedo-sanctioned condition, but so could half dozen other quality corches done the same thing.

It appears to be growing with each passing day the hunt for the next Saban is one for fool's gold. Even Saban bugged out in this era because the competitive advantage(s) have become spread across a wider group of teams.

My guess is "superstar elite" corches with rosters composed of "freakazoids" are going to see 9-3, 10-2, and even...gasp!!!! 8-4 records as competitive builds get spread across maybe 5-10 teams vs concentrated among 3-5.

I could be wrong but i don’t remember the Penn State job being one that anyone wanted. Wasn’t between Franklin and Al Golden who was barely batting .500 at UM? I don’t know, I kinda feel like he deserves a little more credit for accepting the challenge

It's not just the mass pedophilia scandal. Penn State was a dead program. Franklin finished Top 10 five times in the past ten years. In the 20 years before he was hired, Penn State only had five Top 10 finishes. And then they got hit with the worst scandal in sports history.

Franklin saved them.
