NIL has changed expectations.
Boosters/collectives now have leverage over Athletic Departments because they pay for the teams.
Do I think PSU made a mistake, if they end up with a head scratching replacement? Yes.
But, it’s not pre NIL anymore where programs that want to win, will give a HC a long leash. Heck, we’ve seen HC’s shytcanned or run off pre NIL who had recently won championships (Orgeron, Chizik), or had won as consistently as Franklin, with a better record against Top 20 teams (Richt, Tuberville).
It’s essentially Semi-Pro ball now, so HC’s are going to be treated more and more like NFL HC’s because they are making 10x what they made just a decade ago.
The NFL has for a long time had a short memory and a “what have you done for me lately”, attitude. Marty Schottenheimer was fired by Art Modell after taking the lowly Browns to two AFCCG’s and two playoffs in his last 4 years. A team that hadn’t played in a Championship game the prior 20 years or since.
Just look at attitudes here, most posters seem to feel that if Mario didn’t rebuild in 4 years and make the NC or at least deep into the playoffs, it would be a failure. I don’t share that view, but it seems to be the consensus.
If Day hadn’t won the NC last year and lost to Michigan again this year, he would probably be in the hot seat.
PSU has had a cupcake schedule in most of the last few years. All they had to do, in the view of Boosters and the Athletic Department was beat OSU and Michigan. This year they were a preseason Top 5 team and lost three games and to two unranked teams in a row.
Miami fans wanted Coker’s head on a platter in 2005, after a 9-3 record because we got dragged by LSU in the Peach Bowl. 3 years after playing in the NC, getting robbed and beating our arch rivals in Bowl games the two previous years.
Why do we have high expectations and not expect other former powerhouse programs to feel the same?
