Former player arrested in Bryan Pata murder

Cribby, the only time I fought for a girl I was w/, is if she was being disrespected or the dude was being disrespectful…but if I found out that skeeze was messing w/ another dude; I’m shaking that man’s hand, wishing him good luck & move on. Way too much **** **** to focus on one chick that clearly wasn’t mine.
And she’ll leave him the same way he found her.

I mean, thank god they finally arrested someone, but it is SO ****ED UP that he's in what's probably the most famous Pata pic for the last 15 years every year he's mourned
Yes. An amazing irony. I can't imagine the guy sitting there actin like paying tribute to his victim. Bizarre. I didn't read the ESPN article, so assumed the cops still thought it was gang-related, perhaps related to the Haitian community. I kind of figured it was long ago that it would go unsolved.

And this kid was a local kid of purely American heritage from a small Southern town in north Florida . Not from a Haitian gang hanging around the streets of Miami.

As a criminal defense attorney who practices in south florida, I will try to grab a copy of the warrant when it is unsealed and get it posted here.

Currently Jones is waiting to be extradited from Marion, the warrant will remain sealed until he's transported down here. Speaking from experience transport has been taking awhile these days due to covid.

Better.

You really don't want to charge until you have a pretty airtight case, is my guess. Haven't had too much involvement as a lawyer with criminal law but my impression is once you charge, it's hard to drop the case and then retry later if you don't have enough evidence to win a conviction. If you try the case in court and lose, you can never try again if new and better evidence comes to your attention. You've really only got one shot at winning a conviction. So, I guess a lot of cases sit for a long time until there is enough evidence to have a shot at winning.

I remember studying criminal procedure in law school (essentially 4th, 5th & 6th amendments). There are so many hurdles you have to go through before you have a winnable case that you want to bring to trial.

I hardly remember this guy. I guess I was half asleep during that era....UM football became so disappointing and hard to watch. We were recruiting guys all over the place who were fairly decent players, could play major college ball, but not excel. Not the guys you needed to be at the top. Not memorable guys at all.

I'd also say that once the case gets a bit older, the prosecutor wants to be more sure about winning the case. If they had made an arrest in the first 48 hours, it helps to show "we got the guy", but you also know full well that there might be "new" or "additional" evidence that weakens the case. But once you get to "cold case" status, the prosecutors really want to see a win. They don't want to spend all that time on some old half-baked case (evidentiary-wise).

Wasn't that involved in the Marlin Barnes murder, too? He was with the woman...wasn't she killed, too?

Yes. The rapper's ex-girlfriend was hanging out with Marlin and I think he was helping her move. Maybe Marlin and the girl were getting acquainted, who knows, but that scumbag definitely killed Marlin because of the girl. They had no prior negative history.

It takes a true piece of crap to kill a teammate,a brother. These dumbass dudes are willing to kill over a chick that isn't family. I'll never get it. BP and I had some common friends, and although I never hung with him, he was loved by his people.

I had friends that lived in that complex, people really thought dudes were just out looking to kill people. It was crazy at that time.

If Jones did this, I hope he gets significant jail time.

Yeah, I also lived in that complex for a couple of summers (sublet from a friend while the dorms were closed). While it seemed pretty casual and safe, it also wasn't super-hard to get past the gate.

Sadly, I also lived in the on-campus apartment building (years earlier) where Marlin was murdered.

Mind boggling bro. It’s Miami, go North, South, East, or West & u’ll find any chick u want that’s fire. And U’re an athlete?? Yet, u kill ur teammate over a chick that’s moved on? Bruh….it’s some real weirdos out here. Hence, why I started to remove ppl from my circle. If u fighting over a chick that cheated on u, moved on, f’ing w/ side dudes, U’re a weirdo. I know we all got pride, but move on. I can fully attest, the next will be better.

But was it over a female really? Because in an article I read, my interpretation was that Jones looked at the girl as a jump-off more than anything, but I could be wrong though.

Glad the Pata family gets closure.

Jones can rot in a jail cell for the rest of his life. Killing a teammate is unfathomable.

It mentioned part of the reason Jones & Ole girl didn’t work out was his jealousy. So she probably was a jump off, but for him to jump off, not her. So I’m going to assume, seeing her w/ his teammate made his jealousy exponentially higher.

I stopped messing w/ one of my bad, bad homegirls recently b/c her ex was the same way. Didn’t necessarily want to be w/ her, but didn’t want her messing w/ anyone either & when he found out, he had a melt down. Some dudes be on that bull chit, bro.
