For Very Old Timers

Yes, and even on the other side of the building as well near the Ashe building.

Side note about that lot. My first day of classes I parked and got a great spot pretty close to the building. I started walking to class and a whole flock of ****atiels who'd been making a racket took off from a tree ahead of me. There must have been over a hundred of them. Gotta love Parrot Jungle.

Not sure of the time frame you are talking about, but after Hurricane Andrew tore up the aviary at MetroZoo, a ton of the birds relocated to UM. We had a flock of green parrots who lived in the law school quadrangle. Because of their coloration, you wouldn't really see them in the trees, but when they started squawking, you could hear it in all the classrooms.

My first class was August 1990. These looked like ****atiels. I lived in what's now Palmetto Bay back in the 70's and we'd see strays from Parrot Jungle every once in a while and that was farther than UM.

You're right that the apartments we're talking about -- for dorms -- were pretty spacious.

My memory, though, is how there was no air conditioning, at least when I was there. I bought one of those old cube-shaped "fan units" at Zayre's where you poured cold water in a tray over the coils. Some referred to it as a "swamper." I sat it in a chair aimed at my bed and it blew full strength on me all night. Only way to sleep on hot nights. I think, by contrast, the high-rise residence halls had AC.

I never lived there but I think Eaton Hall was all guys and Mahoney all girls. Only time I went to Eaton was to watch NCAA sports or music shows like Shin-Dig or Hullabaloo (I played in a band) on the TV in their lounge.

Beaches: Crandon, or the 1st Street beach on MB south of the pier by the Dog Track parking lot.

Food: Shorty's was a staple but, am sure you're aware, the original burned down (1972??). Having a sweet tooth, was also partial to the Key Lime pie at Tyler's. And Lum's for a hot dog now and then. Ate Italian (at least for Miami), at the old Red Diamond Inn on LeJeune (Canes broadcaster Sonny Hirsch frequented the place).

The UM apartments were "supposed to be" temporary. They were built post-WWII to handle the influx of students on the GI Bill. UM did end up installing window-mounted A/Cs in all of the apartments, and you'd have to go to the housing office to get replacement filters.

They had 2 basic designs, some were 2BR/1B, some were 3BR/1B. The ones between ****inson and the canal were for married students. Some of the buildings got converted into offices, for instance the Dean of Students office (Dean Sandler, Assistant Dean Walker) was in Apartment 21-H. UM started tearing down the apartments in the 1980s and I think they finished up in the 2000s.

By the late 80s, Miami Beach was starting to make a comeback, the first spot that really drew students was Woody's on the Beach (Ron Wood's club). They put sand volleyball courts on the beach, and people loved it. But before that, we went out to Crandon, at the time they still had the "obstacle course" that they used in the old TV show called Superstars (the show where off-season pro athletes would compete in all kinds of Olympic-type events for extra money). At night, people would sneak out to the old beach on Virginia Key too, great view of the city (if you weren't otherwise doing other things).

Went to Shorty's and Lum's, but the other spots had probably changed names by the time that I was at UM.

Here's the old track at Crandon:

Here's a video of an old 100 yard dash event, which includes Billy Sims and Edwin Moses, they even mention Crandon Park in the intro:

A classmate and friend of mine (now deceased) lived in a brick house in Homestead where he grew diffenbachia plants as a business. He stayed when Andrew hit. As the eye passed over he went out and checked his greenhouses and they were all standing. Then he went back inside to ride out the backside of Andrew. After Andrew passed he went out again and there was NOTHING in his yard. Everything was blown away. He told me afterwards that it was the most frightening day of his life and that he'd never do that again.

All those places still exist, but there may be different businesses there now. Burger King is now a noodles market. D'Pizza and Velvet Creme and Miami Heroes have turned into a Starbucks and a Thai/Japanese place. Blockbuster is now a CVS. Specs is, what, a Papa Johns, but Swensons JUST closed down recently.

Yes, the names may change, but there's always going to be stuff across US-1 that caters to UM students. Shake Shack wasn't there when I was a UM student, but it's there now.
Oh ya 100%. I just meant they was no longer a burger king or blockbuster, etc. there. Not that they knocked down the buildings. Shake Shack was new even when I was a student there. I am trying to picture where the swensen was but I can't recall it, but I guess it must have been there when I was a student.

No problem, I definitely understand that so many buildings have changed owners.

Here's what the US-1/Red Road intersection used to be...people would go over to Wendy's (W), they were open late, or to Specs (SP) to buy records or concert tickets. The Swensons was in the same building as the old Riviera Theater, and then you can't forget the ORIGINAL Miami's Be(a)st Pizza, first they were Little Caesars, then they changed to Miami's Best.

Then, across Stanford, you had Burger King on the corner, then you had D'Pizza of UM, Miami Heroes, and Velvet Creme in the next couple of buildings around Book Horizons, and then Blockbuster down where the CVS is now. Add in Denny's and Bagel Emporium, and you had a ton of reasons to cross US-1.

appreciate the pictures. We crossed US-1 all the time too. Dennys was the late night spot, along with Wendys and papa johns. During the day, moon thai was a big hit, same with Whole foods(the hot bar or the asian place inside of it), Fridays, Chicken grill, Miamis best(I believe was the name of the pizza place across from red road, people loved their wraps), bagel emporium for breakfast or einsteins(further up US-1 but walkable). And of course Crown liqour since they didn't really check for IDs lol.

Oh, yeah, Crown Liquor is just a part of the landscape, been there forever. Same with the Publix on Monza. And Bagel Emporium. Good lord, I loved that place.

When I was in law school, multiple different student organizations would order bags of Bagel Emporium each week, to try to get the membership to stop by the office. I was in several different organizations, I think I had Bagel Emporium for free every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for 2 years.

Yup Crown is just the go to spot for liqour at Miami. They probably make a killing off all the alcoholic Miami students lmao. Publix too, that was my spot back when I was living off campus, I would get most of my food for the week there. Much better priced than whole foods.

LOL @ bagel emporium for free 3x a week. I would have done the exact same thing. Bagel Emporium has the best bagels I have ever had, outside of NY/NJ/CT. There was a bagel place on campus called Oasis, and there was Einsteins, neither can compare to Bagel Emporium.

Another place that I forgot about, its not across US-1 but on the same side as UM. Was this mexican place down towards Coconut grove, that a lot of people also went to next to the off campus subway.

I worked at Shell City Liquors across from campus from '79-'82.
The legal drinking age was 18 then....talk about catering to UM students.

I think that Mexican place had a couple of names. Texas Taco Factory was one?

Before that, it was Great Sub Connection. Then there was the stand-alone building to the left of it, that was a Pizza Hut that still had the pizza buffet back in the mid 80s. Used to hit that place with the Eaton crew with some regularity.

Going back to that Crown Liquor, we mixed up a couple of gallons of screwdrivers (Publix OJ, Crown Liquor vodka) while waiting in line behind that Specs for U2 tickets back in 1987. Between the liquor and the lack of sleep, that was my first blackout/projectile vomiting experience. A friend drove me back to Eaton and I gave my roommate the money to buy my U2 ticket.

Good times.

It was taco rico when I was a student. Texas Taco Factory though is a great name though.

Now that stand alone building(at least when I was a student) is a starbucks and the one attached to it was a subway and a smoke shop.

LOL! The crown brand liqour was great. Best deal you could get in coral gables. I have blacked out/projectile vomited numerous times from their liquor. That must have been awesome though, seeing U2 live down in Miami.

Hahaha the Noid in that one pic in the dorms.
I remember seeing him on the field when Dominoes delivered game balls.

Liquor was Foxes Lounge, late nite licka!

There was a burger and dog place, off of red behind the gas station, Ed & Joes I think, $1 hot dogs, $2 burgers and $1.50 a beer. Coaches were always in there. Saw Schnelly, Jimmy and Dennis in there. SWFL Cane probably been there.

Semper Canes!!!

Interestingly, it was both Texas Taco Factory and Taco Rico, literally next door to each other. This was in the late 1990s through early 2000s at least. Everyone I knew had their allegiance to one or the other...mine was to TTF. Looks like TTF is now a Starbucks, and Taco Rico survived the battle and still stands there. TTF had another location on SoBe off of Alton.

Is Crown that place with the drive thru in the back?

Oh wow, ya TTF was gone when I was there. I just assumed they were the same place. That is insane that they opened up right next to each other. That is like something straight out of a B- Comedy Film from the 1990s.

I didn't eat off campus much, because I was a broke college student, but the times I had taco Rico, it was great. I wish I could have tried TTF.

Lotta back and forth about places to get beer and liquor. When I was at UM I'd just walk down to Winn-Dixie and get three quarts of Iron City beer or a dollar. It wasn't good, but it did the job!
