Florida ready to block Miami entry into SEC

Well the Athletic is a sub site, so you can’t read it without a sub, but here’s the link:

And here’s a janky link that will probably give you a virus, with the whole article:

The long and short of it is that Clemson and FSU have more games with over a million viewers of late than anyone else in the ACC, along with Washington and Oregon. Miami is fifth in that group, and honestly it’s pretty shocking because FSU and Clemson are far and away the better draws. Miami is fifth but we are extremely close to being 7-8th too.

My counter would be that when Miami is good we draw as well as anyone else in the country, which is fact, but we also haven’t been good in decades. So we have a high ceiling and a low floor, but we also haven’t touched the ceiling in far too long.
I think the combination of not being good and not playing really good opponents has been the problem. It would be interesting to look at the numbers for the ND and VT games from 2017.

In 2-3 years, I think we're in the catbird seat. It could all start this year by at least putting ourselves in the ACC title game. Whenever we win it, we'll push ourselves over the top in tv viewing. We will be what people are talking about and can't wait to see.

College football is starving for teams to emerge other than Clemson, UGA, Alabama, and Ohio State. You've heard from Herbstreit and others, "College football is better when Miami is better."

I think we are perfectly positioned having made the investment towards football. It's a great sign for the SEC and B1G that Miami is making the investment. It's going to pay huge dividends 2-3 years from now if not sooner.

It couldn't be set up any better. Multiple top 5 recruiting classes to compete with AtM in 2022-23, then 2 games with Florida and ND in 2024-25, and also 3 regular season games with Clemson 2022-2024. There will be plenty of eyeballs on Miami as we audition for both the B1G and SEC.

I would say the methodology used to calculate it has its flaws. This applies to Clemson and FSU too, but any games against current/future Big Ten and SEC schools as well as Notre Dame are eliminated, and every single one of our meaningful non-conference games fit into that category since 2015. I don't think that is the case for a couple of the Pac 10 teams.

FSU also gets a bump by being guaranteed Clemson and Miami every year, while Miami-Clemson only had one occurrence during that stretch (since 2020 didn't count). FSU has an easier path than Miami or Clemson to run up some of those games because of that.

No SEC team will have any veto power over who enters the league.
Indeed, every team coiuld be opposed to the admission of school X and it wont matter
This entire issue is being driven by one thing-TV RATINGS.
Fox and ESPN will decide who is in which league just as ESPN did with Oklahoma and Texas, and Fox did with USC and UCLA.

The idea that UF could block UM from entering the SEC is quaint and naive. And frankly silly.
TIFWIW but we are going to the SEC. The SEC and ESPN isn't afraid of Miami turning into a monster especially if they are in the SEC. That is boogey man talk. This is a business which means the rise of powerhouse Miami means more ratings and elevates the SEC brand.

Yep you would have to look at the game by game. But overarching I was surprised by the numbers and looks better for FSU. Projections are the key though and whoever projects better should win if they had to choose.

And we run the real risk of getting left standing in this game of Musical Chairs when the music stops. I'm not convinced that the B1G sees us as a fit. SEC is our best chance.
After the last 15 years, what are we bringing to the table.
If ND goes Big, we run the risk of being left out altogether..

Well said.

Both FSU and UF got a lot more hardcore fans than we do (especially in this state), but that's part of what makes the Canes unique: UM's fanbase is, as the saying goes, a mile wide and an inch deep.

We got our diehards for sure but probably a lot higher percentage of bandwagon fans than just about any other College Football program.

But when we rolling, those bandwagon fans gonna be right there with the diehards.
Agree to disagree - we've seen both of those stadiums empty on game days recently, and they've both only just started to be ****.

We've been **** for 20 years - anyone that still follows the Canes is a hardcore fan.

You think B1G doesn't take a major program in Florida, a top 3 media market, if it's available? Even if the SEC didn't see us as a fit, they would take us just to keep B1G out of Florida.
Top 16 media market..

I like us in the B10 more than the SEC. Especially if ND ends up there. That conference is shaping up to be more of a national conference w/USC, Notre Dame, OSU, Michigan, Miami, UCLA, PSU. It fits in with our independence alliance before the Big East.

The SEC feels like a better fit for Clemson, VT and FSU.

Anyone ever considered the idea that the sec and big leave us out to dry? Basically rendering us useless for their own long term gain.

Hope I am, Cane brotha

Look, I'm not gonna try to fight with you or anyone.

I am not disrespecting your opinion.

I would simply ask that you not express it in terms of factual certainty, as you seem to be doing.

A lot is going on, and has been going on for over a year. Trust the process.
