Finally Admit Lanning > Mario

Sometimes you have to take a chance. If you’re an elite recruiter, you’re worth your weight in gold. If (when) Heatherman leaves for HC position, JT will get a promotion because he’s so **** important on the trail and has earned that chance.
It’s actually a great comparison. This would be a terrible idea in my opinion. Just because he is a great defensive line coach and recruiter, does not make him a good defensive coordinator and I’d rather hire someone with experience in that regard.

Yea, the td was scored by UCLA's BACKUP qb. What are you talking about? Did you watch that game before making these bad excuses?
I don't understand your argument. Did you see the pick that Raiola threw? You want to blame the coaching staff for that?

UCLA scored one touchdown with the backup QB, on a 33-yard drive where the touchdown was a roll out into the flat. He threw for 43 yards in total!

Don't sit here and tell me UCLA won the game with its backup quarterback. They held onto a lead and Oregon bailed them out on their last touchdown with a backup quarterback.

We blaming Mario for all of Carson Beck's gross *** picks last year?

Classic context only works one way argument.

Oregon got bulldozed in the national semifinal, which feels pretty good on balance. Moore also turned the ball over three times in the first half…which sorta goes to my whole point about good QB play huh?

As we all know, Mario would never lose a game to a team that has lost to an inferior opponent…at least not in the last 10 months. And definitely not to a team that was coming off a 12-point performance against Wake Forest.

No idea what Raiola’s high school ranking has to do with anything, but I guess that makes him a “good quarterback” in your mind. Altogether, good point, that has to be Lanning’s fault too.

Worried about my guy TrumpyCane, this had to be one of the most half-assed arguments I’ve heard out of you in awhile.

“When Lanning was the “better” coach, he had Bo Nix and Dillon Gabriel. Now Mario is the “better coach” and he’s had Ward, Beck and now Mensah.”

That was what you said, Lannings had great QBs every year he’s been there and his teams crash out every year in the same way

Getting absolutely *** blasted and physically taken to the woodshed

Ohio State did it in 2024, Indiana did it to them last year

Trumpycane brought up Raiola because you said they lost because of their backup QB making it seem like Raiola is hot garbage or something

So yes if Mario had a backup qb of Raiola’s level we would beat Wake

Im focusing on a specific excuse that you said about Lanning. You brought up Lanning losing because he had his back up qb. That excuse is deemed null and void considering UCLA had the same issue.

Oregon has so much more talent than UCLA. Both were on their backup QBs. Oregon should've comfortably won that game, but didn't. Lanning may be decent as a DC, but I don't think he's shown to be a good HC so far. (I say "may" because I can't speak to his tenure in Georgia since I don't know what the divide in work and responsibilities were between Smart, Schumann, and Lanning.)

Love JT, but point taken. I trust Mario if that’s his route. But, hiring and elevating coaches within your system is never a guarantee of success. Look at Clemson and Dabo’s incestous hiring practices. IMO, it’s a contributing factor in their decline. New blood , as Mario has exhibited in his hires is good. Flip side, JT is special and again imo, deserves consideration.🙌🏽

Based on advanced stats at least, Raiola played the worst game of any college quarterback this season, so I have no idea what level you think Raiola is, but it is pretty close to hot garbage.

- Lanning's '22 team got killed by Georgia and then lost two more games by a total of 6 points
- In '23 they lost two games by a total of 6 points to the eventual national championship runner-up, Washington (and its NFL quarterback)
- In '24 they lost once, to an Ohio State team that was a full on buzzsaw
- Last year they got beat by the eventual national champion, Indiana

We have different definitions of crash out. Are we giving Mario credit for losing by less to the same team? Because that is a flimsy *** argument.

The bias is showing and I had higher hopes for you in this back and forth.

You don't think the outcome is any different if Dante Moore played?

These dudes are something else. They go on a mope hunt starting the **** looking for mopes to castigate who questioned Mario’s performance in years 1 and 2 and then when you stand up to it and explain the facts of the performance - the record, the decisions, the staff hires - they cry that you’re cherry picking and not bowing because he was way better in years 3 and 4.

No ****.
This thread was created at the end of year three.

By the time OP stated that Lanning > Mario, we had just seen 5 -> 7 -> 10 wins in consecutive seasons. At the time, I thought OP was an emotional response to the Syracuse choke job, not a valid reading of the two coaches' trajectories.

If this thread was created after the 2023 season, I would have had almost no issue with people cosigning OP's premise. But even with the stumbles in 2024 it was clear then that the program had turned a corner. That's not MariBro homerism or cherry-picking.

He hadn’t shown enough at that point. The Beck season was significant as that was two years of results. Good thing we got Cam Ward that year on like the last day or our starter was Poffenberger. We were that close to being a failure as a Poff led team might’ve not gotten to a bowl game.

Anyway, the people I take issue with, they were going after posters for telling the truth in years one and two as well.

There's so little to ***** about with regards to the team that everyone is turning on each other (more than usual at least). This is the sign of a contender.

We byke *******.

Gosh I want to run it all back one more year. But Mario is going to have to show his Rolodex again soon besides all of our coaches are pretty fire 🔥 except Special Teams. They are all going to receive offers. I’m not sold on JT yet at DC either but I sure don’t want to lose him either.

Best to try and focus on the present team and just enjoy this ****! This could be a very special year!

Because Manny won 7 games and people thought Mario would at least do that including an MTSU win not loss. He had what 247 said was the 12th most talented roster in that year so people thought he’d at least get wins commensurate with the talent he had per 247.
This is exactly what majority of us all thought, and i still think if mario doesn’t hire gattis year1 we don’t go 5-7 but those hires failing put him on the right course

Steele had to go too but i think the problem with him was more about talent and culture, hiring vets like steele & strong to help rebuild the culture wasn’t a really bad choice like gattis was. They just weren’t long term solutions like what we have now

Difference between mario and lanning is, mario bumped his head with hires early but corrected the course. Lanning made great hires early but bumped his head in year 5, the worst possible time to do that because they have a top7 roster and probably won’t make the playoffs
Mario’s course correction has been huge in our rise. A leader that knew he made some hiring mistakes and then corrected them not just for sake of but corrected them with much improved results. Those results speak to recruits and what they can expect coming to the U.

You’re proving my point. Calling nearly 100% of the roster worthless is a subjective, after-the-fact excuse, and finishing 5-1 is relevant because we were discussing the team’s trajectory when Mario arrived, not Manny’s full-season record.

After all this back and forth i'm not sure what the point is anymore.

Worthless is a subjective word that I did not use. I said they objectively weren't worth keeping, based on Mario's style of play and how quickly he flipped the roster.

Mario left Lanning the keys to a conference contender and chose to take the rebuild at Miami head-on, without concern for how it looked early on. Pointing to 5-7 isn't the indictment against Mario you think it is when he's coaching for National Championship 3 years later. It comes off like cherry-picking for criticism.
Maybe I am wrong but I never hear the media giving Mario credit for Lannings early success!
