Finally Admit Lanning > Mario

This is just semantic gymnastics and moving the goalposts to avoid admitting the take was premature.

You qualify that Lanning was better 'early but Mario is better now'; that's not the premise of the thread (Lanning is better than Mario). In fact, it's a perfect example of the "cap/spin/whitewashing" you mention. Your effort to decouple staff turnover from roster turnover is an entirely unrealistic way to look at program building. No coach in America—not Saban, not Smart, not anyone—has a 100% hit rate on assistants during a total teardown.

Bumping threads to point out that people panicked, made premature declarations of coaching superiority based on Year 1 and 2 growing pains, and were ultimately proven wrong by Year 4 isn't 'reigniting divisions'—it's just stating facts.

Can you point to multiple coordinators hired by Lanning who weren't up to the task or a couple of games where Oregon **** the bed? Because that's why people had their opinion on Nov 30, 2024 when this thread was started. At that point, Oregon was #1 and beat Washington 49-21 and we, the #6 team in the country, blew a 21-0 lead to lose to lowly Syracuse.

This thread was an emotional react to a loss that shouldn't have happened the same way it had happened the prior two seasons. Look at how many stupid threads have been started about which game we should win but will lose before the season starts.

No **** the rankings are not perfect lol. But the rankings are just a part of it! If Al blades went to Bama or UGA where he would have top of the line coaching, strength and conditioning, and culture, he would have turned out a better player. Our evals look better now because we have all of those things in place. Blades had everything required to be a good player. Talent, bloodlines, height, weight, and he was a vocal guy who was a leader. Give that to Saban or Smart, they have a higher chance of molding buddy into a better player. We didn’t just accidentally pick all the 4-5 star busts like we were doing a challenge NCAA football 27 lol. We just didn’t have what we needed to give the players we got their highest chance to thrive! While other ACC teams have been doing more with less for decades.

And speaking on Dawson, he ain’t out schemed anyone since he been here lol. He’s got the players, not the skills. If you give him wakes team he would have like 2 wins. He ain’t creative or innovative. Name me 1 game where he out schemed another coach! And don’t say A&M last year. Because it was windy and we ran the ball. Nothing earth shattering about that

Hmmm, really?!?! How did that work out for Isaiah Horton, or Colbie Young, or Josh Horton, or how about Jaden Harris? All regressed or disappeared Perhaps you want to rethink this, but based on your other posts, you probably don't/won't.

I’m not going to make a retrospective effort to negate a premature take, because doing that would be making the exact same mistake they did. My point is that there should have been absolutely no conclusion drawn with an incomplete sample-size or comparison made at the time, and especially not to Lanning.

This thread was bumped for one specific reason: the irrational confidence of crowning Lanning. Had his name not been used to critique Mario, then the absurdity of this thread wouldn't hold such relevance now. Asking for a real-time comparison at that specific moment in history completely negates the massive foundation Mario built at Oregon compared to the total rebuild he faced at Miami. It’s wild to base your entire comparison on a situational head start that Mario himself provided for Lanning.

Taking a snapshot from late 2024 to justify a "Lanning > Mario" thread is a futile effort to make sense of an awful take. It doesn't prove who the better program builder is; it just proves what day it was on the calendar.

However, if making a bad hire or losing a game you shouldn't means a coach "isn't the guy," then Lanning fails by those metrics as well. Look at what happened the second Lanning didn't have Mario's roster to lean on, or what happened the second Will Stein left for Kentucky and Lanning had to replace his staff. His team looks soft and the Oregon offense completely fell back to earth after he promoted Drew Mehringer from within.

Now they're in weekly dogfights and losing to less-talented teams with first-year head coaches. They were utterly anemic against Oklahoma State and just suffered an embarrassing home loss to an unranked UCLA team. Before that, his game-management arrogance against Washington single-handedly cost Oregon a winnable game in 2023.

People were drunk on the team Mario built and then used it to critique him while crowning his successor.

Trumpycane is pretty sure Lanning **** the bed multiple times, he made some awful 4th down choices against Washington in two separate instances along with some questionable 2 pt conversions that cost them the game

He lost by like 40 to UGA his first season, along with a bad loss to Oregon State, granted can say well first season so can’t hold it against him too much

This was later in year in 2024 but got absolutely destroyed by Ohio State in the playoff

Yeah my names on the list.

I was right.

Mario sucked *** the first few years. Made things extremely difficult for no reason.

We were correct in noticing it.

Your blind homerism isn't impressive.

Mario also lucked out getting Cam Ward at the last second. Otherwise it was a battle between Poffenbarger and Emory Williams.

Since that spark of luck, he's been drastically better.

He's significantly raised the quality of play, and simultaneously raised the expectations that I will be holding him, his staff, and his players to.

Lmao that’s dumb AF! Those guys were 1 year transfers at the locations they moved to. Except Young who had that case and then injuries at UGA and was still a 4th round pick. If they were recruited out of HS and went to the schools you’re referring to or spent multiple years there we could compare. Jaden Harris? Lmao everyone knew buddy did not belong at Miami when he was recruited! Horton led Bama in TD’s last year. This year at A&M their whole team is a disappointment. Their QB is worse than TVD! At least TVD was injured. Guys who are at a school as a green freshman and become ingrained into the system and culture cannot be compared to nomads, throw aways (Harris) and mercenaries.

If they’re so ingrained into the system and culture, then why did they transfer?
