Final defensive rankings

People expecting coaches to suddenly change the results they've achieved over fairly long careers just because they change jobs are usually disappointed in the end.

Diaz is who he is. He's a feast or famine guy for the most part who creates negative plays and gives up too many easy passes. That's why his TFL and sack numbers are usually very good, but he still gives up way too many yards and points and lets teams keep too many drives alive.

The guys trying to make everything about stats just need to be honest with themselves. Does this defense look great to you? Does it get the results it should get given the NFL talent on the roster? Are you cool with bad QBs setting completion records on us and good QBs looking like HOF QBs?

I'm hoping he gets better because we need him to, and all I want to do is watch UM play great football. I don't care about being right or wrong about Diaz. But our pass D is a sieve. There are way too many guys wide open, and the QB seems to have enough time to find them regularly. It's been dealer's choice for some average/poor passing QBs against us, and that has to get fixed.

Well put

at least someone gets it

I don't give a **** about the sacks and turnovers

All of this.

This line is very telling and true. It also applies to the HC too.

I was never a fan of his and he isn't who I wanted. When they brought in Coach Kul, I thought the chances of Diaz having success were greater. If they can get some help (coaching wise) with the secondary, perhaps we can improve much more.

I have been quoting stats, a lot. With that said, I am not all about the stats. I also don't think this defense is "great". I do think they did improve (from last year) and they don't get much help from the offense. I do believe our D has plenty of room for improvement.

We must improve in the secondary, the zone (stop it) and 3rd downs. We do make too many inferior QBs look like Elway.

It would be nice, if the offense was able to help the defense, or at least, stay on the **** field. This is another reason why I am more concerned with the offense.

We need to upgrade the talent and the coaching at DB. There are numerous issues there.

Chise,

Some questions.

Obviously we can do more than one; we can improve all aspects of this staff. With that said, doesn't the offense concern you more? How about STs? I am not happy with the defense, I am just more concerned about other areas more.

I would like to know your thoughts.

i'm sorry I didn't put up every single last possible stat

for some reason I just put the ones most relevant

Diaz defense is susceptible whenever a stunt or blitz doesn't hit home.

The biggest outlier in the defensive metrics are the lack of holding calls. The lack of holding calls have had a huge impact on the defense, especially on 3rd down. Its actually quite sad. They would rob these kids of their due for whatever sick agenda the NCAA has against Miami.

Where I blame Diaz is the fact that its clear as day that we aren't going to get the calls, yet you still don't adjust the third down tactics.

Im sure he has some number to justify his decision making. But ****, the ish was ugly at times.

Still wouldn't get rid of him

Another issue I think our defense struggles with is the lack of practice against a tall-efficient passer.

I know height doesn't always matter.. but Rosier doesn't know how to Manipulate the pocket in his favor.

I think our DBs looked much better practicing against Kaaya than they did Rosier.

If we get a QB that can really light into the 1st team D in practice then we will get better. Just my opinion.

Scoring defense is the only statistic that really matters.

If we stay 20th or better at that then, im content.

IDGAF if you give up a 1000 yards per play, game, series, etc....

As long as you're top 20 in scoring defense then you should be winning double digit football games.

If not. youre offense sucks.

I think the numbers tell the story of the Diaz defense. Its the same as its always been and with the upgraded talent, it didn't change. Nationally above average, but the defense has too many holes due to scheme to ever really be ELITE.

He played a bunch of different coverages this year, so perhaps your conclusion is better supported by "due to playcalling." Maybe even "perhaps due to philosophy" of being so aggressive in the front. I don't think anyone has an answer for you yet. I think we're all waiting and hoping he can somehow make the jump to elite. There are reasons to be skeptical. There are a couple reasons to be hopeful.

I think we need help everywhere. More talent. Better coaching. Better concepts.

We need a good QB first and foremost. I’d love to see Rick hire Kendall Briles and let him design the run offense from our spread. You saw the incredible transformation he engineered at FAU. You know what he learned from his dad and what they did at Baylor. They ran for 600 yards with a WR playing QB on the UNC team that destroyed us a couple years ago.

Briles could install an unstoppable offense with our players, and the fans would be able to stop looking to blame the offense for the defense’s struggles and visa versa.

Defensively, we need to figure out a way to stop being so feast or famine and need to figure out why we are getting destroyed in the throw game by poor passing teams.
