Film Review- Chigozie Nnoruka

In my view, UCLA used him in a way that made him look a lot worse than he is. Anchoring and trying to two-gap is not his strong suit, but he was continuously asked to take on blocks and stay at the LOS rather than attacking gaps. Here, he will be able to use his quickness to cause havoc. I would expect a player similar to what we got out of Tito, but hopefully a bit quicker than it took Tito to emerge. This is a nice pickup to add to the room.

He’s gonna get some good coaching here for sure which is what Tito was raving about

Only one that can replace Willis is Nesta and I don’t think he’s ready but the more quality snaps this kid can take the more effective Nesta can be

Big pick up

I’d say the two most consistent sorts of negative feedback I receive is the my articles are 1. Too long. 2. Boring.

I do try and keep that in mind, hence me adding a Portal 2 quote etc. but once I get into the content I guess I revert to my comfortable ways. 🤷‍♂️
Don't scrimp on the detail in my opinion. Maybe a "Top-down" approach where you lead with the summary and then add the detail below. Those that don't have the interest/aptitude can jump out when their attention-deficit disorder kicks in.

I would be surprised.

Hey, you put tons of work into this stuff, keep doing what you are doing. Those of us who don’t want all the detail can skim through but a lot of people here seem to dig the details a lot. I watched a little of his film and he looked fairly quick when penetrating with less than perfect technique but disprutive anyway. He is not Willis who was horn to the game, but has the look of the type we use to turn into great DTs.

Thanks Lance.

The lengthy detailed analysis you supply is unmatched and not available on TOSs. Please don’t dumb it down. This differentiate CIS from its competitors.

Great job.

What he's really asking, I think, is if Nnoruka/Nesta = McIntosh/Norton, treating Ford and Bethel as maybe a wash from two years ago.

Is this a case of comparing two 3-techs for 2019 to a 1/3 tech combination from 2017? I'm assuming Bethel and Ford offer approximately the same skills with an improvement over 2 years ago for size/strength/quickness development and experience.

Lance, would you agree with this characterization? Or are the different positions (by technique) really that different in our system?

Is it critical to ordinarily employ a 1/3 tech combination at DT in most situations (maybe we move out of it in passing situations)? Is there something inherent in our scheme that we have this 1/3 tech combination most or all the time?

In other words, how interchangeable are our DTs? Who plays what for us?

Otherwise, I am a bit sobered by Lance's assessment. The UCLA kid will need a lot of coaching up between Spring and August to improve technique. I really wish we had two years to work with him.

I feel the same way about the Butler transfer. I had the impression from his film that he really needs some S&C work and it might take two years but we only have one.

Otherwise, I'm still very happy we got both. I see a lot of potential from both kids.

I tried to focus on him during stunts and looping around. He can move and bend. This is more likely how we'll see him used here and, for those reasons, I think he's got more potential in our defense than Tito showed (even though he was relatively solid).

Yep. He can cross the face of guards and beat them inside. He will be a different player when he's consistently stepping toward gaps instead of engaging with the guy across from him. Hill and Phillips are also tailor-made for stunts & games. Hill can redirect suddenly and efficiently while Phillips has rare straight-line speed for his size that he can convert to power. We haven't seen Rousseau in action but his length is an asset too.

Garvin is the 1 guy who's at his best as a 1on1 edge rusher. This should be his year.

Good stuff.

I expect Garvin to showcase himself as the best player on our team this year

Phillips looks eerily similar to Rousseau. It's not just his number and size, either. Both guys showed rare fluidity and ball skills in coverage, which makes sense considering they were WR/S at some point in their careers.

If Phillips transfers and stays healthy, we could be looking at a really interesting duo in 2020.

From when I watched Rousseau, the reason I thought he was special was because, along with that freakish length you mentioned, he can convert speed to power (like you said for Phillips), bend decently well (though not like Hill, and relative to Rousseau's freak height), and used his hands better than I expected. For context, it was against our Tackles.

I think he can slide into the Chad Thomas role and go around the edge sometimes, but knife in the way Chad was used as well. If Nesta, Bethel and Ford make even normal leaps, we'll be good to go. Not going to replace Willis, so have to do it differently.

Your analysis are spot on and very entertaining, excellent work in showing the big boys some love keep doing it your way sir.

If your articles are two lengthy for some readers then they can break up the reading into before and after their nap time.

Go Canes

An like like Tito and as Lance mentioned he has heavy hands which is essential playing inside. It's all that slap boxing as a youngsters coming back to pay dividends, he just needs to put a little Bishop Don Magic Juan in his ****back whined up before delivery.

Yeah I forgot Phillips will have to sit a year. He's still a blank canvas at this point so a year of development isn't the worst thing for him. He could definitely help the rotation now though.

Nnoruka needs to spend this spring training with Paul McCarthy working on hand fighting techniques before he comes to Miami.

They have a very comprehensive martial arts program at UCLA. This guy is director of it. How many colleges have that?

I wonder whether this system he is teaching from any single school of martial arts.

The way he tries to upset your balance with minimal effort seems similar to videos I've seen of Krav Maga although it is probably common to a lot of different schools martial arts. Maybe also wrestling.
