Canes have only allowed 7.8 points in the 2nd half this season . Diaz has pitched 3 2nd half shutouts. that is better then

Clemson 10.6 points
FSU 11.1 points
UF at 7.9 points

Bama 5 points
OSU 4.9 points

IDK why, but whenever I see someone say this defense is good I cringe. We have let teams who suck on offense make us look terrible just because we have lucked out with multiple big time drops and a couple redzone turnovers does not make me forget that almost like clock work the teams marched right down the field on us. Defense also needs a lot of work

Defense is improved considerably from the Golden years. The style of defense is also much more entertaining to watch. Golden's death by a thousand paper cuts theory was miserable.

I'll give credit to the coaches, they've done a good job considering the amount of youth and a lack of talent at some positions. Diaz has been great. He calls an aggressive game and forces the other team's quarterback to have to make plays to beat you. His work with three freshmen linebackers has been notable too. Quarterman, in particular, seems to have really gotten it and is rarely out of position. His tackling technique is also very solid. Rumph has taken a group of corners, who were essentially "Corn Elder and a bunch of other random guys" and made them formidable. They're not lights out and there's still occasional coverage breakdowns but overall they've been good. To be honest, I'd say the coach I'm most disappointed with on defense is Kool. Yes, sacks are way up and the line is overall much imporved but I still see them really struggle to pressure the quarterback with the front four. A majority of the sacks come on blitzes which is great but I'd still rather be able to get consistent pressure with the down linemen and against P5 teams, they're just not getting it done.

Jury still out if Rumph can recruit, but he's a good coach. Malek improves every week it seems

Your post basically implies that we've gotten lucky on defense. Over 11 games, that's a tremendous and very specific pattern of luck.

You mean like we did in all of our loses just about? You know that is football right? All year and almost every game we have held teams under their normal offensive output and scoring average. Quite crying and start realizing that we are doing well on D given the youth and depth. We make adjustments and we keep teams from scoring in the second half. Enjoy it cause it can all change quickly.

Only team i've ever seen that had that kind of luck was Muschamps 10 win team with the gatas and ND teams

The defense is improved from the Golden era, and quite a few of Shannon's teams. They were able to accomplish considerable improvement despite losing AQM and Grace, plus depth with Young. The freshman trio at LB have to be one of the best stories at Miami in a decade or more. There have been missteps, but I think the Canes will have more than a few special seasons on defense with another two recruiting classes to restock depth and build up the secondary.

Now, about those extensions and raises for Diaz, Kool, Blanda, and Rumph...

Agreed on 2006. The 2006 team lost 4 games where the defense gave up 17 points or less. 2006 was painful on offense.

Hats off to the players and staff on this years defense. They've played way above what I expected.

After the defense lost Grace, and then to be forced to play with so many injuries that 4-5 True Frosh were on the field together for periods, the defense simply played way above their collective abilities. And, that's all you can really hope for from a coach and his players. Doesn't mean they don't or won't have flaws going forward, but what else can be asked for from this unit? I still can't believe they held UNC to 20 points with a mash unit.

2005? Granted, we didn't beat a top-five VT on the road, but we haven't (yet) gotten BTFOd a la the Peach Bowl. ****- that was a disappointing season.

the stats say Miami's d is good. the held fsu, unc, below there season avg in pts and yds, nd has a good offense but there d was horrid. Miami's offense made nd's d look good but did a good job limiting them on offense.

vt was the outlier and it was a thurday in Blacksburg and they were without half there de's and db's this d has been very good stats don't lie when u are at top in yds and pts allowed, now if they gave up a lot of yds and were like 100th in yds allowed but 14th in pts then u could say they werent' really any good but that's not so with this d.

Maybe I'm out in left field on this one. But you could probably say the same thing about our offense as we have a considerable amount of drops that could probably had made a difference with one or two games in our record. The defense is good considering it leads the nation in TFL and posts a lot of 2nd half shut outs. And we're doing this with a very very thin secondary and questionable starters in the safety positions.
