Field Yates picks favorite draft picks

He is a “bell cow” back… I think he really liked it here and didn’t want to transfer again but the splitting carries wasn’t an idea situation “for him”. It’s a tough spot to be in to have really good young guys and you want to keep them in the fold. But there was a need to satisfy the roster to an extent.

He could’ve put up numbers to make him at least a 2nd rounder easy. Hampton from UNC had 1,600 yards at 5.9 a carry. Dame had 1,000 yards at 5.7 yards a carry. He had the ability and we had the offensive line for him to do better numbers than what Hampton put up.
Tough to feed a #1 ranked passing offense and running offense…. Once showed what he could do and a potential heisman its tough to walk him back for Martinez

Wish he was here this year or next when we potentially start nickels

Fletcher ran for over 600 yards last year and Lyle ran for 400. That’s 2,000 between the three of them. Damien Martinez could have ran for over 1,600 yards himself with zero effect to our passing game. All I’m saying he deserved some of the carries Lyle and Fletcher received but I also believe we might have lost one of them to the portal had that happened.

I also don’t think him getting more carries and a higher rushing total would’ve made us any better as a team last year it would’ve just shifted production and probably makes us more attractive destination for future 5* RBs.

Martinez's vision is clearly superior to Fletcher's.

Fletcher has comparable physical traits, and those traits are very good, so he is a capable back here. But he can't see/feel the game nearly as well as Martinez does. That's why Martinez gets an additional yard every time he runs the ball versus Fletcher.

Our hope for a ceiling offense should be Fletcher's physical skills improving and passing Martinez's. It's possible. Fletcher, physically, is very impressive, and a full off-season with no lingering foot injury should have him ready to roll this year.

Additionally, we need Lyle to be a legit 1B, capable of being productive on 10-12 carries a game. I'm sure Mario/Dawson/Merritt would love to split the carries like they did last year, it kept all the backs healthy all year and they seemed fresh. But that depends on how good they are. In a perfect world, Fletcher and Lyle are 2024's Martinez and Fletcher, and Pringle is Allen and Lyle.

Lyle had 100 on one mop up time play against USF… Fletcher have a 100 yard game? I think they both can take the next level in terms of thunder and lighting but let’s not act like Martinez in a good groove didn’t start dictating game flows

And to think we were up 21 - 0. Mario **** the bed so **** hard, to a first year coach.
The biggest mismatch in the game was Cuse passing game agianst our DB's. It looked like men against boys. They wiped a Pena TD off board early on a bad call. It was only matter of time before that Dam broke in the game.

I'll be the broken record....Imagine having been schooled by a coach just a couple games earlier who knew it couldn't stop your offense but slowed down the game by running the ball and using up all the clock in the world. While our DB's couldn't stop anyone, why not try to limit their freaking possessions, ESPECIALLY with a bad call going your way and up 21-0.

I'm going to assume two things:
1. that Dawson had an aggressive game plan
2. that Cam never checked a pass call into a run call

At any point in the Cuse comeback, Mario could have stepped on the autonomy of Dawson or Cam. But he chose to ride with them. We can nitpick running back rotations or complain that our receiving corps looked junior varsity during clutch moments in the second half, etc.

But almost all of the complaining about the Cause game is of the flavor "Mario should have neutered Cam Ward and Shannon Dawson in the midst of a shootout". I'm of the mind that 2024 was the "live by the sword, die by the sword" season. I don't usually simp for coaches, but this is one area where the CIS brain trust is completely over their skis.

I know this is a jackass/smart-*** thing to say bc i know you aren't including the ol (which actually is ludicrous). All that aside after Cam the next best offensive player was Francis Mauignoa the entire year
I do not believe that to be the case. He wasn't even the best OL on team. He has the highest NFL grade but he left some meat on the bones.

Dawg, well written, thanks for that but operative words there, "in the midst of a shootout" - it shouldn't have gotten to that point. You neuter whoever you need to neuter to win the game, our DB's were a glaring issue for weeks, Dawson, Mario, **** Cam, all shoulda been good with a gameplan that protected a lead.

Fair enough. The elephant in the room is that the loss hangs on the defense

But sticking to O- in hindsight it would have been the right call to have Damien Martinez just run the game out. I guess my question is this: when do you override OC and QB1? When it's a two score game? One score? Tied? The concept of running the ball to ice the game makes perfect sense, but when you do it makes all the difference. And Mario got to 10-1, on the verge of the CFP, by riding with Cam and Dawson. It's bitter irony that we could have made the playoffs had Mario reverted to caveman ball for 30 minutes of the season. But that's the rub with 20/20 hindsight.

I'll also say that in the moment, I was blaming our receivers for not getting separation or making contested catches. Unfair to scapegoat X, Horton, and JG when the defense was just grabbing its own ankles and wiggling its buttcheeks. But that was my thought at the time.
