Fall Practice Early Portion Summary - 8/20

No reason to be surprised by veteran guys still being toward the top of the depth chart. The most interesting depth chart and rotation will be on 09/27 @ UNC. By that time, we'll have seen enough to determine the differential between "knowing the right place to be" and "the ability to make plays on the field."

Biggest plus: Dean being 1st team. Don't care if its because Bandy is hurt. Most people assumed Ivey/Frierson would be the backup. Everyone should be rooting for Dean to be on the outside and Bandy being full time nickel. Or secondary would go from good to great in that scenario.

Biggest surprise: Derrick Smith being 3rd team. From all accounts, the coaches are not sold on DSmith holding that Striker position down right now. Amazing because most fans thought this was the "Derrick Smith" position and he was a shoo-in to be the starter.

UPDATE: After practice Manny Diaz spoke with the media. Referring to Joe Jackson, he said the elbow brace was simply precautionary/protective. Said if the trainers say he’s good to go, then they will have him practice. On if they give older players a break or limit their reps for certain reasons (injury), Manny said nobody on the defense has the game figured out well enough to earn that treatment

Love it.

Bandy is still going to be the full time nickel and start on the outside.

Anything on Bandy?

Great news, hopefully Bandy and Wilder will be back sometime this week.

For all the talk about Njoku lately, his name seems to be missing from the latest depth chart.

Thing that jumped out to me was the 2nd string O Line. All of our freshman are littered across the line opposed to the dudes that have been here 1 or more years. Specifically, no Hebert and no Hillery...**** freshman passed those dudes up already?!?

Stefan.........what is going on with Njoku? DMoney has said he was impressive in camp, so are injuries still holding him back?

Easy dude, Hall missed pretty much all of a Spring practices and Knowles has been in the program going on 4 years now so maybe it’s finally clicking for him.
LMAO. The poster was taking it easy. Knowles is trash. He’s that piece at the bottom of the dumpster than makes you pinch your nose because it smells so awful. Anyone defending him is a complete homer or doesn’t know a lick about football.
I still have nightmares about him trying to make contact, let alone tackle someone in the Gtech game. Gtech called a run to his side EVERY time he was on the field. It was comical. If the LB or DE didn’t make the TFL it was a guaranteed 1st down. He looked like a scared puppy playing with grown dogs. His post snap backpedaling on obvious running plays would’ve made Dorito proud.

From what I understand Mallory is not a 3rd string TE. He plays a different role from Brevin and Polendey. He's the receiving TE and will be used accordingly per formation and play call, aka different packages. It's not as simple as 1st, 2nd, 3rd string. Him playing on all units supports this.

Just trying to look at the positive side. I know Knowles is brutal and will likely be on special teams only once Hall takes over 2nd string.
