Yeah, the current quote (8-figure amount) is for the initial changes to the locker rooms, weight room, IPF, etc. But the big money (9-figure amount) will drop old-Hecht and replace it with new-Hecht.

I've been talking with a few posters, and if the whole "100-year anniversary" campaign works its way to the stated target, we are trying to raise 9-figures for Athletics, not an 8-figure number.

I hate to say this, but the old-Hecht was a craphole in the mid-80s. Not sure why the Miami Beach building inspectors haven't come in and deemed it unsafe for occupancy.

Probably, but would still really be tight. I don’t personally think they’re going to move Cobb, I think they’re going to build up vertically. Everything on campus is so tight, and the intramural fields I see that as a nonstarter. I mean the students have to have something.

Until there’s a plan out in the public domain, I’m just guessing anyway.

John Ruiz is building a 75,000 seat stadium on that parcel. parking will be along Granada and the Doctors Hospital parking lot.

that plot has other future uses. look up the master plan approved by the city of coral gables commission
 
So what I’ve learned from this thread is we should have done this years ago, but don’t need it due to NIL, but it will never be as good as the best, but it should be a stadium too, but it won’t help if we are t relevant, but will be great and much needed. :onthego:

Do you recall if they said that was the total EXPENDITURE or that was the total fund-raising goal (i.e., they already have a lead "name" donor, and the 62-64 is the additional fund-raising needed)? Just curious, as I had heard the expenditure amount would be higher, but maybe things will be done in phases.

This may end up being our largest-ever single building project (dollar-wise, as the Arena was pretty significant too) and we don't want to find ourselves in a "Beta Blake GoFundMe" situation late in the process. I know UM is being pretty agressive with the 100-year anniversary fund-raising (overall, as well as for Athletics specifically), so I'll be interested to see how Dan manages this first big $$$ challenge, as well as how the alums and HC members respond.

But you have to believe that if construction is already starting, UM feels pretty confident about the fund-raising.

That Granada spot is too oddly shaped for the track even without stands. That's why I was thinking at least a partial move of the IM fields. The other consideration with that spot is that it's directly across the street from a residential area. I'm sure the school would prefer to be a good neighbor and not **** off million dollar homeowners by being too intrusive.

I agree. There's a difference between "San Amaro" and every other spot along UM's perimeter. At least when you analyze San Amaro between Mark Light and St. Augustine's, there's only a handful of private residences on San Amaro (excluding, of course, the St. Augustine church/rectory and fraternity row). Those few private houses have endured the traffic/parking/lighting along San Amaro for decades, and every homeowner/new-purchaser knows the deal.

Anywhere else you go on San Amaro (past St. Augustines)/Campo Sano/Pisano/Granada involves a change for the current residential housing, and the homeowners would LOSE THEIR ****E.

I'm close friends with a Homeowner in that area and he'd be Livid....

The AD office has alluded to funding not being an issue on several occasions. As far as specifics he was telling a recruit I brought in about the locker room, some potential NIL meeting areas and a few other things. Obviously legislation would have to change to have NIL on campus as far as I understand but he also stated it is going to be the best in the country and stated that budget in passing. As far as it costing more as I told someone else you always go over budget on projects like this between 15-20% so we will probably end up in that range in reality.

Man, I've been wishing we could use that land since I was an undergrad. But look at it on a map. It's not a great piece of land, it's long and narrow and it curves to one side (insert jokes here). Our only hope is to relocate WestLab. Where is that property that John Ruiz wants to use for Coral Gables High V.2?

Yeah, I think this is what everyone forgets about Granada - not only is it a narrow strip, but it curves to the right as well.

Think if that space is going to be used, we'd need to get rid of West Lab and Carillo. Otherwise, I just don't see it as a viable option.
