He was #1 on my Portal QB list back in December, before he even entered the Portal.
Phenomenally gifted arm talent. Pure deep ball passer, with very good accuracy on the intermediate routes between the hashes.
Not as much of an improvisational off-platform thrower like Cam was, but has the ability to make plays off script & hit passes while under duress.
He's not as evasive in the pocket as Cam was in terms of eluding pass rushers, but he is a quick processor & gets rid of the ball fast. Has very good footwork in the pocket, he climbs & steps into the throw when rushers collapse the edge.
He does have the tendency to plant his feet & throw off his backfoot, but because he has a such a natural big arm, he can get away with it & still get the ball where it needs to go. That's something that he'll have to adjust more once he gets in the NFL, he doesn't really need to change it now in college.
Not super mobile, but has enough mobility to pick up yards with his feet if it's not there.
Excels with RPO reads & holding Safeties. Has A-grade field reading capabilities. Actually, I'd say along with pure arm talent, the biggest difference between Darian & Carsun Bext, is reading coverages. Hence why he doesn't turn the ball over, he can actually read the Rover & doesn't telegraph his passes while staring down the primary read.
Cam is like Pat Mahomes in his play style, while Darian is more like CJ Stroud. He's not a loose arm gunslinger, but he's not a Captain checkdown game manager either. More of a precision field striker, who attacks coverages with the Deep ball & makes large chunk play throws in the intermediate routes. Throws really nice back-shoulders & is a very good rhythmic passer on Post & Corner routes.
Barring injury, he's a no doubt surefire 1st rounder, potential Heisman & Davey O'Brien candidate. A real 1st rounder, who doesn’t have to be carried & can still play at a high level even if he's not surrounded by elite talent.
