ESPN 2001 Canes Megathread - David Hale/ESPN article on 2001 Canes

Read what those guys said about Butch. About recruiting and developing players and establishing the culture. Here we have it straight from the horses' mouths. Some if yall think the game has passed that culture and the man responsible for it by. That's what some of yall DIDN'T want to return to? Wow.

Greatest....
Game vs Washington
I still remember my late cousin going on a lunatic Fringe after the Jerome Mcdougle pick 6 midway of 2nd Q....it made it 37-0...

That game was epic on so many levels...

2017 ND game is great but this game at the OB tops it easily.

Don't they own the ACC network?
They do but SEC has too much influence over at ESPN.

1. The money from the ACC deal is bad and runs until 2036.

2. Top 25 games being buried on the ACC network where people in the ACC footprint or nationl don't have access to it.

3. The network is located in Bristol, while the SEC network is in Charlotte because that's SEC didn't want the ACC to be close.

CBS and ESPN are about to be in a huge bidding war for SEC games. Maybe ACC is a back up.

Anyone wondering what fueled the drive to win on every play besides pride and brotherhood is this quote from Randy:
”The thing that was most impressive about that team is that, at any point in time, a younger player could take your position. It wasn't something given. You had to work. Take Ed Reed. You had Sean Taylor behind him. You had Phillip Buchanon and Mike Rumph, and you had Antrel Rolle behind them. Everyone knew [Clinton] Portis, but you had Willis McGahee and Frank Gore. If you didn't put in the work, there was somebody behind you ready to take over.”

People have worn this “us against the world” badge for a long time but ESPN is all over us all the time

They love us

ESPN wants the ACC to be legit. The contract they have with the conference is the terrible. Its easy money for them if Miami, Clemson and FSU are in the playoff discussion.

Not exactly 20 years...but Alabama did have a 30 year span of winning only 1 Natty. They won in 1979 <12 years> 1992 <16 years> 2009

Also, depends on what you mean by irrelevant. We were in a NY6 bowl just 3 seasons ago. Before that, 2003 was the last year that we finished ranked in the top 10.
Right?!?! Outside of like 6 teams, I guess everyone is irrelevent..................

cant believe its been 20 years man
not a single kid in hs was alive to see them
its more of a myth/legend than anything
like me hearing about the 4 horsemen of notre dame growing up

has any team every come back after 20 years of irrelevancy?
Bite your tongue, McCloud was around for the 83 NC.

Thanks for sharing OP, I still remember waiting in line outside the Rose Bowl and seeing National Guard troops with M16's at the gate when we entered (9/11 precaution), the rest of the game was a wonderful blur.

Also, hoping we stop listening to:
"CB Mike Rumph
When Butch left, we were kinda stuck, and I remember we all went upstairs to talk to Mr. Dee, myself, Bryant McKinnie, Ed Reed, Ken Dorsey and a couple more guys. There was a rumor that we were going to get that coach from Wisconsin, Barry Alvarez, and we were like, "We don't want him. We want somebody from in-house who knows us, and that's Coach Coker." They listened to us."
Yeah, in hindsight maybe shouldn't have listened to the players on this one.
