For lifetime medical, I think they only have to be on the roster for 1 regular season game, so the pension probably vests immediately too. ****, I don't even know if the average NFL career lasts 4 years.
Now, they probably can't draw money out immediately, but I'd imagine that everyone who makes a roster is eligible for benefits at retirement age. And the longer you play, and the more money you earn, the higher the benefits.

Believe its three, and they need to be on the roster for 3 games for it to count as a pension-qualifying season.
