The lead up to the game is just as significant as the game. Proudly wearing The U daily and getting comments from strangers yelling “go U” “go canes” “you think they can beat Indiana?” Etc is right up there with the actual championship game we get to watch Monday. This entire run has been so special. I was 21 the last time we played for a natty. I was single in college and watched the game from O’Kellys sports bar in Mt Pleasant, MI - fire up chips and RIP to the owner of okellys and the wayside, my guy Norm! Now I’m married with a son and will happily enjoy watching with my family in the basement.

I say all this to implore everyone to enjoy the process, enjoy the run! You never know if/when you get to enjoy something as special as this season.

I remember falling asleep as a kid on the living room floor as we battled Penn state in the fiesta bowl only to wake up to bad news. This year my 13 year old son fell asleep as we watched the fiesta bowl but I got to tell him the GREAT news in the morning!

At our annual friends and family ski trips for NYE, all the dads and kids donned Miami gear that I brought with me from 20+ years of purchases. My son and I getting matching Toney jerseys. Meeting a random guy at a summer resort who is a die hard cane and getting matching canes hats. ****, my wife ordered herself multiple shirts to add to her collection this season. All this after years of hearing me say “this is the year” “this time it’s different”. Plus a few of my students have jumped on the Miami bandwagon.

Being a cane is special and people who fans of typical state schools don’t understand our brother/sisterhood. Thousands of texts sent with 2 friends I’ve met in person less than 10 times but it feels like we see each other daily, right @DerekDohrman
Texting back and forth with the only guy in my hometown to proudly rep the canes since the 80s up here. (He’s on here too but i don’t know his username-shoutout to his son JT too!)

Imagine if Christmas came once every 23 years. How special would it be when it finally happened? Monday is that!

This whole run has been one for the ages! Let’s finish with a natty Monday night!

Signed,
A lifelong cane fan up here in Michigan flying my U flag as it snows.

I was 13 when the Fiesta Bowl Robbery happened. I remember saying back then we’ll be back next year. 23 years later we’re finally here after so much disappointment and heart breaks. No matter the outcome Monday, it has been an amazing run and I haven’t felt like this since I was in Middle School. Funny enough my oldest is the same age I was when we last won the title, I tell her enjoy this you never know when the next time is going to be. And it is funny, everyone has been asking me since last Friday “Do you think you guys have a chance?”, I just look at them and shrug my shoulders and say have you not seen us play? LETS GO CANES!!

You don’t see a fire up Chips comment on this board very often.

Was Herb Geometry still the football corch when you were there?

I love when people in public throw up the U or say “Go Canes.” However the ones who look at me crazy I don’t like them lol

That’s awesome.

I grew up in Buffalo. I had an old Canes hat that a girl gave me because her boyfriend didn’t want it anymore. It said, “I love you, Derick ” On the inside tag.

I wore that thing nonstop for seven years.

After JUCO, I went to Pitt to play for Johnny Majors. He got let go, and Walt Harris came in, along with Buddy Morris as the strength and conditioning coach.

I still remember the first day. I was trekking up the hill to Old Pitt Stadium in the snow, feeling like I’d finally made it. I showed up to train and completely forgot I had the hat on. It was just part of me, and I didn’t think twice about it.

Needless to say, Buddy blew a gasket and made my life **** for the better part of a month.
And I still wore that hat when I went home. People would look at me like, “Don’t you play for Pitt?”

Full circle: Buddy’s stepson, Fred, trains my kid for soccer now. So I had Fred text Buddy, who’s with the Arizona Cardinals, and ask if he remembered me. Buddy texted back, “Yeah, I almost killed him.” 🤣
I was always a Cane. Still am. It’s made me who I am today.
And we’re going to win the Natty on Monday, and I’ll be watching the game with my kids. 🙌

That’s an awesome story! That’s what I was hoping to get from this post. Thanks for sharing.
