EDIT 0! Sleeps…IT’S GAME DAY!!!

The lead up to the game is just as significant as the game. Proudly wearing The U daily and getting comments from strangers yelling “go U” “go canes” “you think they can beat Indiana?” Etc is right up there with the actual championship game we get to watch Monday. This entire run has been so special. I was 21 the last time we played for a natty. I was single in college and watched the game from O’Kellys sports bar in Mt Pleasant, MI - fire up chips and RIP to the owner of okellys and the wayside, my guy Norm! Now I’m married with a son and will happily enjoy watching with my family in the basement.

I say all this to implore everyone to enjoy the process, enjoy the run! You never know if/when you get to enjoy something as special as this season.

I remember falling asleep as a kid on the living room floor as we battled Penn state in the fiesta bowl only to wake up to bad news. This year my 13 year old son fell asleep as we watched the fiesta bowl but I got to tell him the GREAT news in the morning!

At our annual friends and family ski trips for NYE, all the dads and kids donned Miami gear that I brought with me from 20+ years of purchases. My son and I getting matching Toney jerseys. Meeting a random guy at a summer resort who is a die hard cane and getting matching canes hats. ****, my wife ordered herself multiple shirts to add to her collection this season. All this after years of hearing me say “this is the year” “this time it’s different”. Plus a few of my students have jumped on the Miami bandwagon.

Being a cane is special and people who fans of typical state schools don’t understand our brother/sisterhood. Thousands of texts sent with 2 friends I’ve met in person less than 10 times but it feels like we see each other daily, right @DerekDohrman
Texting back and forth with the only guy in my hometown to proudly rep the canes since the 80s up here. (He’s on here too but i don’t know his username-shoutout to his son JT too!)

Imagine if Christmas came once every 23 years. How special would it be when it finally happened? Monday is that!

This whole run has been one for the ages! Let’s finish with a natty Monday night!

Signed,
A lifelong cane fan up here in Michigan flying my U flag as it snows.

I remember on January 1 1995, I wasn’t feeling great because of the New Year’s hangover but I was at my girls house and we were watching the Canes and Nebraska play for the title. It sucked because we lost and I went to bed feeling worse. I woke up the next morning to my mom calling me and telling me my pops had passed in the middle of the night. Needless to say, 1995 didn’t start off great for me.

Enjoy your son, bring him up right like my dad did me. We are a family and it will never change. Whenever you see another with some Canes gear on, just know that they are your “family”.

I’m sorry for your loss man. I lost my dad in September of 2024, and then I just lost my mom two months ago in November. I think what I miss most is just talking to them, the conversations we had about life. It’s weird how it comes and goes…like, you’ll be okay and then a memory will come flooding back. This run by the Canes has actually been the best thing to ever happen for me because it’s brought me happiness during a rough time.

Dang man, sorry to hear that. Lost my dad 15 years ago. Definitely rough but it does help to create a mindset of enjoying every day you have, especially with family (blood and cane). Thanks for sharing and Go Canes!

100% man. Sorry for your losses. It’s amazing what sports can do & I claim it’s exponentially more impactful as a canes fan. It’s not easy, but I can tell you now as I’m 15 years removed from losing my dad, it gets better but there are still moments that pop up here and there. Enjoy today, Monday and every day. Go Canes brother!
