I work in the marine industry, we've got some electricians who think they are tough lol. We've got some fiberglass guys that wear gear and are pretty tough but one fiberglass guy in particular is beyond anything I've ever seen. Exactly like the old guys in Scotty's bar you described,If you own a sailboat that is kept IN the water you have a yearly chore of hauling the boat and sanding / repainting the bottom with anti fouling paint to keep barnacles from growing on the hull. Wonderful task involving toxic dust so most people wear respirators and full body suits for protection ... unlike some of the old salts that worked IN the yard ... they wore shorts, no tee shirts, and smoked Camel's while they sanded and breathed in that toxic ****. They would be sitting at Scotty's bar, covered in red or blue bottom paint, smoking and chugging beers. One guy in particular, Charlie Campbell I believe was his name, always had a parrot on his shoulder. The kind of scene that would make a good book cover for a Tim Dorsey novel.
He uses a massive hole saw every day, cutting holes in the Bow of boats for Thrusters. He wears shorts, short sleeve shirt, no body suit, no respirator not even a mask, just a hat that's 40 years old lol You could take a razor blade and slice his forearm with it and he wouldn't even feel it nor bleed out because of the layer of fiberglass built up on his skin from years and years. I can not imagine what his lungs look like.
Different breed of guys or maybe just plain old stupid
