This is one cool customer for a Coach. His players were getting creamed and off kilter. Originally UM ballers were just long shots no assists. Coach Larrañaga unleashed a full court press as his players are more athletic. He sat down stars that dogging it, and put bench player in. The bench responded. How many times have we Football sticking with unproductive player because of being scared.

UM hired a young 39 yr old coach with little experience, but had Hollywood good looks...and could speak so well.

But Coach Larrañaga is a god. Give me old Butch!

This was genius game adjustments.

Actually, Canes were doubled up at 18-36.

Look, can we get Coach L enrolled in an accelerated football learning program, and have him take over Grolden's mess!

Basketball finds ways to with with less talent and resources where Football finds ways to lose with more talent and resources. Both coaches in year 4 and same cloud.....

It’s not the fire; it’s the spark.

Sheldon McClellan got the blaze going with two critical shots. The first was a three-pointer that tied the game at 55 with 1:59 to play, then a floater that gave Miami a two-point lead with a minute left.

But coach Jim Larrañaga credited fifth-year senior Joe Thomas with the spark that propelled the Hurricanes to a 63-61 victory over the Richmond Spiders to advance to the NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden in New York City on March 31.

“[Thomas] came in with lots of energy, hustled all over the place and finished some shots around the rim,” Larrañaga said. “That ignited our team.”

Thomas, who graduated from Dr. Michael D. Krop High School, scored a season-high seven points and grabbed six rebounds, all in the second half.

“Joe Thomas was the difference,” Larrañaga said. “That combination of his effort, hustle and defense in the press made the comeback possible.”

The Hurricanes trailed by 18 with 16:51 to go in the second half, but as they have shown all season, they play well on the road. The victory was their 10th on the road.

“We’ve been through it before,” McClellan said. “There’s something about this team; we don’t get rattled; we focus on the next play.”

Free-throw shooting was a difference, too. The Hurricanes didn’t toe the line in the first half but made 23 of 28 attempts in the second, including 12 of 14 in the final 5:30.

Thomas’ contributions off the bench were key, but an unexpected sixth man for Miami might have been the new 30-second clock, an experiment the NCAA is running during the NIT in an attempt to speed up the game.

“When they got it through the press, it was eight or nine seconds off the clock,” Larrañaga said. “They had to get organized and get in their half-court sets and didn’t have as much time to do what they normally do.”

Larrañaga said the shortened clock forced some Richmond shots and helped Miami to create offense from its defense, something it wasn’t able to do with Richmond scoring at will in the first half.

The Spiders opened the game with a 13-2 run that started with two three-pointers from 6-foot-9 forward T.J. Cline, the son of women’s basketball legend Nancy-Lieberman Cline. That, coupled with a lackadaisical defensive effort against Richmond’s Princeton offense, made it appear as if the Spiders had punched their ticket to Madison Square Garden.

Miami used a variety of looks before it was able to get things going. The Canes employed a five-guard lineup and tried playing McClellan and Ja’Quan Newton at the point.

McClellan paced the Hurricanes with 16 points. Sophomore Davon Reed struggled from the field but finished with a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double. Tonye Jekiri, the ACC’s leading rebounder, finished with 10 as Miami outrebounded Richmond 47-32.

Next up for Miami is the winner of Louisiana vs Temple

From what I've seen, Coach L already knows twice as much about football as does Golden.

I stand by the NIT being the independence bowl of college basketball.

BUT this man can coach dammit! On a larger scale than last nights adjustments,
He,s kept the players motivated for the tournament in general.
That had to be tough to do.

I agree on the comparison. This would have been getting the football team to adjust to beat a mid-level ACC team at best but we couldn't even manage THAT at the end of last year. The difference with Golden is that he would assume his scheme was still "right" but the players had to execute it better in the second half.

Celebrating NIT wins? Man you guys are desperate.

We're not just celebrating wins, but the fact that these young men never quit, even when they were down by 18, fought hard and came back to win, which is apparently something that golden cannot do. THAT is what we're celebrating.

All we need in football is this kind of "accidental" hire. Coach L more or less hired himself. Left on their own Donna & Co would have hire another idiot like all their hires. We need a mistake because nothing they do purposely will benefit football.

We're talking about Miami basketball. Winning the NIT would be a huge accomplishment, independence bowl comparison aside. This isn't a storied program.

18 post season appearances all time. 7 tourneys and 11 NITs. 14 of the 18 have been in the last 20 years, and this is our first NIT semifinals.

Under Larranagas watch we've tied our best NCAA tourney run and are having the best NIT finish. Let's be reasonable.

Unlike Folden, Coach L prioritizes winning over maintaining continuity. What a concept.

Golden was actually 41 and had Hollywood, FL good looks.

You really missed the boat on this one. I am not big on celebrating NIT wins either but this was a great coaching job. Those kids came out like they really didn't want to be there. I stopped watching for a few minutes because they just didn't have the fire. (Hmmmmm..sound familiar?) For Coach L to get those guys refocused and ready to compete in that second half was a thing of beauty. That's what you call big time coaching. (also changing the scheme too.)

Its just apples and oranges right now between the two programs. If Coach L had consistent top 10-15 recruiting classes like Golden does, we would be in the Sweet 16 yearly.
