I imagine that, if this were to come to pass, it would not be a firing, given the timing. Al would be resigning with a negotiated buyout less than whatever is contained in the contract.
I do not believe there is any reason to believe the buyout decreased significantly as of January 1. The years on Al's contract do not begin in January - each year begins in February. Many contracts list multiple dates on which buyouts decrease (could be quarterly, as of end of each season, or just about any other date that makes sense to both parties), but it doesn't really make sense that a large decrease in the buyout would occur 1 month before the start of the next year on Al's contract. That's just my opinion as a lawyer who negotiates and litigates these kinds of things on a regular basis.
