Once again, no competent University President takes money from the general fund and gives it to athletics. It just doesn't happen, especially at schools like Miami, where athletics doesn't run the show. Usually, the athletic department is responsible for their own budget, and by that I mean whatever they earn/fundraise they get to spend. Period. They get some funding from the University(IE Student Fees), but other than that, the school shouldn't be subsidizing athletics.

By the way, Dr. Shalala, nor any other University President is a dictator. They serve at the pleasure of the BOT, who has the power to force changes in any department as they see fit. The BOT, or should I say the athletically inclined members of that body could and should have been more proactive in regards to athletics. They didn't do anything as the arms race heated up, they sure as heck didn't step up and start writing checks themselves.

That's how it is supposed to work. To expect Dr. Shalala or any other University President to keep their finger on that department is a fool's errand. It isn't done for a reason, because their primary job is to raise money for the parts of the University that isn't featured on television every **** week.

Yes to all of this also.

Yeah, I get it, USC/Keck is the same way and it seems to work and I think more will move towards that type of system. It's the result of some people having insurance and others not having insurance. The only thing unethical in that sense is that only some people can afford the insurance.

Disagree 100%. What was and is unethical was making patient care decisions for where they are going to have care done based on their ability to pay, and in the process not only cutting funding from Jackson, but in fact placing a financial burden on it that it is still recovering from.

Not surprised that you won't answer the question I posed earlier. You really think Tad Foote was the reason we had success in the 80s. To each their own.

Patient care decisions are based on insurance.

This might be the dumbest comment on this board.

University rankings (which are stupid, but anyway), applications and selectivity all rose under Shalala.

The focus is on research (ESPECIALLY medicine) because grad school prestige plays a huge factor in most undergraduate rankings.

I'm guessing you went to Miami in the 80's or before.
The infantile first part of your post notwithstanding, at least you try to address mine.
You basically agree with me that Shalala focused on research. Other than the med school (which almost went under due to greed) she did nothing to improve the Undergraduate or Graduate experience. Also, I never said that focusing on research was bad, it is a cash cow, and cash is good for a private university. But to focus on research and neglect academics and athletics is not what I want in a president. Only now under Frenk are we getting better student housing, upgraded Undergrad buildings, and of course a competitive football team.
I went to school at UM in the late 90's. Honestly, my degree isn't worth any more today than it was back then. Arbitrary magazine ratings mean little to me.

Oh really, because it looks like you're avoiding the question again for the second time. Just own it man, you think the president is responsible for the team's success/failure, so Tad is the reason for the 80s.
Sure my guy ... the dynamics of cfb have changed since then, coaches salaries aren’t the same as back then but Shalala paid them like it was ... it all starts up top with admin

As a not for profit hospital, you are legally not allowed to turn away a patient or make a location decision based on insurance, so that is just not true.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make, but it's perfectly legal to do what USC is doing, and what Miami probably did. I don't know the full details about Miami's situation, but you described it in a similar fashion.

She gets us in trouble with the NCAA, and then “saves us” by reducing the schollies penalty? This is staring down the ncaa? Lol

Typical politician to do the damage, and then swoop in afterwards to try and salababe what’s left of the University’s image.

And don’t think for a minute that she wasn’t part of the Nevin scandal. They knew all about Nevin, and had been warned on multiple occasions that he’s a cancer.

She ignored it because the checks were clearing.

Not true. Not true at all.

She knew they had little proof of anything and she bid her time. After 1.5 years, they stated that they needed to prolong the investigation for even longer. She told the NCAA that they "were dealing with minor infractions, had delayed the process for well over a year and cost her athletics department millions and millions of dollars." She also told them that she had just completed a $1.5 billion capital campaign and would use the "requisite funds to seek justice." Two weeks later UM received a slap on the wrist.

She testified and two weeks later the NCAA slapped our wrist. Those sanctions were "bunny". Go to Google and read all of the news stories avaliable 2-weeks prior to her testimony and the stories concerning our "sanctions".

It is clear to anyone literate that she scared the "beejezus" out of those Souther red-necks! She was perfect at the end of the process. They did not expect her reaction. She simlply "alluded" to certain things and threatened to divulge them. She also was very clear that UM had raised $4 billion in capital during her tenure and was not a cash strapped school.

Read what she actually said. Read her words.

Ok but why did he suddenly have the ability to do that? Did he mysteriously grow a pair overnight? No, he finally got a boss that empowered him to do his job and gave him the resources to do so.

Echorst was useless and I can only think of Walter Sobchak when I think of him... “I told that ***** 5 times...”

I'm sure getting throttled by Clemson served as a pretty strong catalyst.

I went to school at UM in the late 90's. Honestly, my degree isn't worth any more today than it was back then. Arbitrary magazine ratings mean little to me.

1) Your degree isn't worth any more because YOU'RE not worth any more. I graduated in 2005 and all the people I was working with were Ivy League or very good state schools (Michigan, Texas, etc). Don't blame your personal shortcomings on the University and then have the nerve to refer to someone as infantile. A Miami degree is much more prestigious now that it was in the 90's.

2) You clearly do not get the big picture. The insane notion that Frenk is responsible ALONE for new student housing demonstrates your unbridled ignorance. Who do you think raised the money for that? Do you even know what the University Village is? Who was President when that was built?

3) Blaming Shalala solely for the athletics struggles is, again, completely ignorant. Blame the BoT for being cheap or blame yourself for not donating enough. What about PRIVATE UNIVERSITY do you not understand?

4) Average SAT scores and class rankings have been rising steadily for years. My academic experience was extremely rigorous and prepared me just as well as my peers.

The arbitrary magazine ratings mean little to most people who understand them. Most people who understand them are not high school kids applying to college.

IIRC the NCAA could have come down harder on The U for the Shapiro scandal. Donna stared down the NCAA and the NCAA blinked. Like her or not, she's in deep with the Clinton Cartel and that's not by being weak.

Yep. She's a ****. But she knows to be friends with the biggest **** in history.

I have a great job and family. I have everything I have because of experience not because of my degree. I know people with Ivy league degrees working hand in hand with others with State school degrees and both with great jobs. You seem very naive about how the workforce actually works. I do a lot of hiring st my work and I can tell you where you went to school is unimportant to me. I want to see experience and drive. Give me the hard worker over the snob all day everyday.
Average SAT’s for getting into most schools have been rising. That means little.

It was Frenk who made the decision to upgrade the student housing. In Shalala’s tenure it did not happen, despite her fund raising. She had the money a long time ago, but decided to buy an overpriced Hospital. You can try to peg the housing project on her but the fact is she did not do it.

Shalala had a hand in all of our coaching and AD hires. There’s been plenty of testimony from people who worked with her that that was the case. For someone supposedly good at fund raising she never bothered to raise any for the football team.

So this is thread is still going. Just like anything Clinton, just will not go away. Listen guys, I am jealous of both of you. You are so young and attended Miami after it became THE U. See, I graduated when it was still Sun Tan U. Back then, you told someone you went to Miami and they said nothing. By the mid-eighties, you said you to Miami and they stopped whatever they were doing with a "NO SHI!!!!, You went to THE U!" Since that was long before Shorty, I think it is safe to say the delta was the football program.

Anything The University of Miami has become was all about the football program. I never loss a case to a Ivy league attorney before or after our days of glory but what mattered in the hallways of the court house after that glorious NE game was not the body count but always, "No SHI!!, you went to THE U" Before that game, all I got was a curious look from a beaten foe trying to figure out what happen. The football program gave us prestige and band recognition. Donna gave us embarrassment and scandal second only to Tad(he was a smuck too).

Dude, the University Village went up in the middle of her tenure. I'd rather hire the guy who doesn't just make **** up to support his agenda.

Please be better than this. Student Village broke ground 2018. It most definitely did not go up in the middle of her tenure. Terrible try all around.
