▪ One UM official said even though Diaz has prioritized local recruiting, he’s determined to land elite players from out of town. He also wants his coaches taking the lead in evaluating prospects.
Former player personnel director Matt Doherty, who was replaced by Andy Vaughn, had wanted to evaluate players, according to a UM source, but Diaz prefers the person in that role be an organizer primarily, with some other responsibilities.

Why the **** would he be doing Evals???

There are risks to both approaches. Just remember Dorito talkimbout the great safety from NJ on that video clip. And despite what that blurb says, it wasnt and could not have been all one or the other. Evals have to pass through multiple gates, hopefully.

Because when he was leaking info to CIS Petey told him that he has a great eye for talent.....as they gently caressed each other to the dulcet tones of Robert Knowles' high school game film.

Doherty's role in CFB is similar to what a GM is in the NFL. Also he was a scouting assistant for a couple of season for the patriots so it's not that crazy.

Imo it would be crazy to have a director of player personell who wasn't capable of evaluating players.

Respect but it makes sense to let the coaches do the evaluation. There a little more advanced. If also say scouting between HS and college is a bit different.

Normally I wouldn’t think this is as outrageous as people are making it out to be. Every school organizes itself differently, and maybe that’s something Dougherty grew into. There are also so many unanswered questions about the significance of his evals and the role they played in deliberations and ultimately offers.

That being said I’ve never seen an offer protocol as broken as the way Richt handled them over the past three years. The approach to multiple kids every cycle was bipolar and contradictory, yet strangely limited in scope. Kids they loved in January they hated in June, and versa vice.

Maybe this is a window into the dysfunction, maybe it isn’t.

If this tidbit is true, it would be the first of Manny’s moves that I have questioned.

My hope is that Andy Vaughn will be an evaluation guru in the tradition of former NFL network draft savant, Mike Mayock. Watch tape, talk to high school coaches, watch high school games, watch more tape....over and over and over. With those tasks, Vaughn could recommend to our recruiters (Cooney and DVD) and to our position coaches his top targets. Then, those coaches and recruiters can jump in with their opinions. A shared evaluation. When agreement is reached, the recruiters take over.

That makes sense. But no way can a coach spend the necessary time to review tape over and over and over. Would never happen.

I don’t see anyth8ng wrong with Doherty wanting to do that. The NFL has GMs and scouts, it’s no different. You can’t expect 1 position coach to evaluate tape of every HS kid out there and honestly 1 position coach shouldn’t have the only say in a recruit. Sone guys are great coaches but horrible talent evaluators, and vice versa.

No doubt, i definitely want my position coaches, coordinators, and HC to have more weight in the evaluating process and overall strategy. I was just saying it's good to have an extra set of capable eyes on prospects.

He was with the Patriots for a few years under that whole scouting department.... But with that being said, coaches go and get who you think fits best for YOU. You're the ones who know the system and played/coach football not some guy who sits behind a desk all day who may have never put a helmet on in his life. Richt wanted to run it similar to an NFL style with the personnel department separate from coaches.

You all are overreacting like always.

People like Cooney, DVD, Andy Vaughn etc are the guys who will initiate first contact with players letting them know if the staff is interested & send to the coaches who then watch the tape & eval if they're good enough for an offer.

The coaches have quality control assistants & GA's who job it is to watch film & do the grunt work while the position coaches are handling their other responsibilities.

The recruiting department puts together events, keeps in contact with players & sets up UV's & OV's for the players, the coaches keep in contact with them as well & will evaluate their tape & in person camp performances.

There's nothing wrong with having the coaches be the main evaluators of potential prospects, it's a collaborative effort it won't just be the coaches doing it alone, they'll just have the main say on if the prospect is worthy of an offer.

This isn't that big of a deal.
