Do We Have Some NFL Talent (First 3 Rounds) Developing?

The more UM teams I've seen the more I understand that we definitely have the habit of overhyping our guys. It's been about 10+ years of it now too. I think we got so comfortable with greatness wearing orange and green that we haven't adjusted to the fact that not only has the team not been elite in over 15 years but neither has the individual talent.

It shows up the most when you watch other teams. I love Wesley and think he'll be dope but I now I understand he wasn't an underrated kid that should have been a 5 star once I watched Harold Perkins. That dude leaps off the screen in a way that's crazy. Same would go for Nyjalik and how Dallas Turner looked as a freshman by comparison.

It doesn't mean I don't think Nyjalik and Wes will be amazing and can develop to being top 3 round players but we definitely assume the best and get there on our guys far too early. Which makes us crap on them later because of our outsized expectations.

I wouldn't assume a single guy on our current roster is top 3 rounds just based on recent history. The guys over the last 4 years that did flashed something serious and were undeniable (Rousseau and Phillips)
QFT!!! Said it better than I could

Although this season has been a wash, one positive I've started to take from it is it seems like we're developing some young future leaders for next year that have high NFL draft-able talent:

Leonard Taylor
Darrell Jackson
Nyjalik Kelly
Kam Kinchens
Wesley Bissainthe
Colbie Young
The RB Position looks good if we can get healthy (Parrish, Knighton, Chaney, Citizen)
Anez Cooper
Jalen Rivers
John Campbell

The key will be these players taking the next step after a full offseason, and start leading this team
you forgot our two best players the punter and kicker
i see them drafted before alot of the guys there

Kam and Taylor are the only guys on this list that has shown enough play making to be drafted before 5th round. Neither has shown enough consistency to be drafted in the first 2 days. Taylor needs more strength for a NT/DT and Kam's blown assignments will scare away most teams who value Safeties as an actual Safety valve. The 2 RB's on this roster that have displayed draftable skills have fumbled and shown lack of availability that'll scare teams.

Edit: Forgot about Bissainthe/Cooper. Wes definitely flashed some tools and gives you the sense that he just needs another year or 2 in a college weight room. Cooper needs more snaps to show that there's no conditioning issue considering his size.

Not saying Kam's the next Ed Reed, but Reed was blowing assignments left and right at the same point of His career as Kam.

And not comparing Gore to Chaney, but Gore tore His ACL twice at Miami, and He ended up having a HOF career in the NFL.

You never know.

I mean sure, why not, I'd love you to be right. Call me skeptical, but I'm willing to revisit a year from now.

It’s more of a list of guys that have NFL traits, are young and seem to be improving this year

Not guys that are ready to be thrown into a Mock Draft

Most are Freshman, Sophomores so next year is big to see if they continue to develop

Hope all these kids get drafted and selected high, but unfortunately believe many of us still vastly over-rate Canes talent. There's a substantial difference between a Day 3 selection/undrafted free agent - which we have plenty of - and a Day 1/Day 2 selection. Those guys are physical freaks as well as game-changers who consistently make plays, not just occasionally flash. Mario has a decent start and hopefully can attract that level talent.

Nail on the head.

Big difference in 1st Rd & late round. Maybe Jackson (can’t teach size) but even that is probably overreach. Going to take a while to get this thing right.

i have NFL traits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not to be a hater, but I don't see a single guy on that list that is going to get drafted in the first three rounds. There are a few freshman on there, so I will exclude them for now because they need time to develop. I just don't think LT, Jackson, Rivers, Young, Stevenson or any of the rbs are talented enough to go in the first three rounds. And you chose to put Campbell on there? Kitchens might be one of the only ones that has a shot

100%. Guys like Cormani and Francis is where we see the likelihood of our Cant Miss type guys go up. But right now we have a ton of projects that project very well if everything goes right. Tough to just mark it down like it will as it's been a long time since things have gone right.

Fair enough but give them until the end of next season then revisit the question.
FS I’m a *********

I will give them til the end days to shape up.

**** I’m still waiting for Bard Kayak to make his mark in the league.

I still think Steven Morris will become the next Jeff George.

I’m holding out belief that Duke Johnson is the modern day Gale Sayers.

Marcus Forston is on deck.

Gore was as elite as it gets before tearing his acl...Averaged 9 ypc as a true freshman before tearing up his knee

6 can definitely be a top 3 round guy. He is what the NFL values. He is a big guy that isn’t a throw away on passing downs. Kam will have insane ball production, but thay doesn’t always = drafted high. I can name plenty of safeties with insane ball production in college that weren’t drafted high. He will definitely get drafted if he continues on this path, but I’m not stamping day 1-2 on him yet.

Not commenting on any of the freshmen yet. Rivers is the wild card IMO. Another year, I could see him going top 3 rounds. He has the size and ability but he needs to stay healthy, he really only has 1 good season under his belt. Stevenson will have a chance as well because he will test well but he is a Safety all day.
