DL Daylen Russell commits to Miami

Alright then.

It’s 2025 and this guy has had 2 springs and an entire fall to make some sort of progress.

Link to page:

+ Grew almost 4” since high school and is now listed at 6’3. During the process, I didn’t think he was even 6’1, but good for him.
+ No listed weight on the roster.
+ Not sure if he was hurt, but I don’t remember a number 90 out there making noise in the two practices I went to.

Does anyone have any news (positive or negative)?
He’s still living so that’s good news🤷🏾‍♂️

Looks like everyone had their weight taken down on the site

I remember seeing him last year and dude had put on some serious weight

This is what I will say, Russel is about 6’2-6’3 closer to 6’2 and he came in 270+. Decent athlete and quick enough for his size. From his tape I don’t think he played much hand in dirt DE or DT.

Can Daylen Russell take a step and contribute this season?

With the current state of the DT room Daylen Russell becomes an extremely important depth piece for this upcoming season. We all know to go deep in the playoffs having quality depth at DT is vital, Miami currently has only 6 potentially playable DT’s on the roster with Russell being #6. He is currently listed at 6-3 and I am assuming he is around 290- 300 by now after reporting at 275 in the spring of 2024.

History
*Ranked No. 26 defensive tackle in nation by Rivals…
*Finished 2022 with 84 tackles, 10 sacks and three forced fumbles
*Earned Miami Herald’s Miami-Dade 4M-3M Defensive Player of the Year honors

From SI article

Frame
Based on seeing him play vs Tampa (Fla.) Jesuit last night, it was immediately obvious that Russell had changed his frame since last year. According to multiple members of the Columbus staff, Russell was roughly 245 pounds during the 2022 season. He’s now 275, per Russell’s own admission last night.

The added weight looked good on him, too. Some players just cannot hold over 250 pounds and play at a high level. Russell did just fine. He’s been benching around 350 and squatted over 500 pounds. Thus, Russell put in the work to add that mass.

Earned Respect
From communicating with numerous people around the Columbus program, Russell has been and continues to be a favorite for coaches and teammates. He’s earned respect for his personality and play. That’s a great sign for this young man’s future on and off the gridiron.

“He’s a great kid” was one unsolicited comment about Russell, just as an example.

Athleticism

While 275 pounds, Russell showed he could move sideline-to-sideline. There was a play where he was at left outside linebacker. The opposing quarterback rolled away from Russell and was headed for the sideline but Russell cut him off from the backside. That was a tremendous effort, first off.”

D. Lewis has his work cut out for him with this one. I pray it all works out.

6 hours ahead, or 20 months behind? The article you are quoting was published in September 2003.

I know when the article was published that’s why it’s below “history” lol. He was in high school when those things were written about him, he has now been on campus for two full springs and on his second summer. My point is can he become those things written about him, can he transition from a Miami Dade high school defensive player of the year to a true contributor for The University of Miami because with that lack of depth at DT he will be needed.

What year did you graduate from CCHS?

Who cares what high school I went to, I am not lining up in the trenches for Miami. I see you don’t understand or just want to make a weak joke, so I will make it as simple as possible.

Miami 2025 DT Room
1. David Blay RSR
2. Ahmad Moten RJR
3. Justin Scott SO
4. Artavius Jones RFR
5. Daylen Russell RFR
6. Donta Simpson FR

This is it, there are no more defensive tackles on this roster. For the sake of the football team that we all “supposedly” support, Daylen Russell needs to pan out, because no matter if you like it or not he will see the field this season a lot.

If he was a bad take, well there is no running from it now because he is all Miami has. There is no way in the world Miami can go through a full season and only play 4 DT’s. So does Daylen Russell have the traits to be coached into a serviceable DT or will this be another wasted season because the coaches did not address the depth need at DT?

from the clips seen from um camps and him walking around in the back ground he looks like a div 1 dt. He looks to have a lot of weight at worst he appears 6'1 285.

Sounds about right. Miami had Simeon Barrow listed at 6-3 and she measured at Atlanta at 6-1 283. That’s enough size to play a few snaps a game and hold his own.
