Discussion: Should we be hitting the JUCO and Canadian market harder?

Thought we were sniffing around Chuba Hubbard a few years back but nothing materialized..never expected him to blow up like he did.

We can’t evaluate prospects form local HS now.. and you want us to dive into the juco and Canadian world? LOL

We got Richard Mercier and Sherko Haji-Rasouli out of Canada, right? Can't hurt to turn over those rocks. Especially now with social media making it even easier to connect. Heck, Claypool didn't get any attention until he started posting his highlights online.

JUCO is good for DL because they don’t need to be that smart. It can be dicey otherwise because of character issues. Late-bloomers who went to JUCO are a different story.

I’m open to recruiting Canada. There are only a few kids to comb through and Canadians tend to like Miami. Our 2001 team had two Canadians starting on OL, and Richard Mercier was one of our best guards ever.

we used to own Canada with Romberg, Sherko, the goat Richard Mercier.

we almost signed a DE in 2000 Nautyn McKay Loesher4 Star out of Ontario but I believe he signed with Bama

Canada definitely produces great OL. Romberg and Sherko dominated during their times here. During those times, Kehoe had a really good contact up here that would let him know about kids who were getting NCAA looks in high school.

These days, the best kids usually leave before their senior season and transfer to school in the states to get more exposure (sound familiar).

If UM wants top OL from Canada, they need to get on them early (sound familiar lol). The best kids are already playing at some prep by their senior year, which means they have probably have offers already.

I honestly dont think anybody did. He played some WEAK competition and he would routinely score untouched. He put in some size and learned to run tough at OkSt.

That's an issue when recruiting up here. It's hard to gauge just how well a kid will do playing American rules, where their isnt as much space. Chuba's tape made him look like he was playing against little tykes. He definitely showed he was indeed a baller tho!

It's not the 1990's. Going to be tough to find unranked gems who are actually Miami caliber. Seems like now days with the recruiting industry the good kids in Canada are 3/4 stars and ranked anyways.

Wasn't there that t/end we were after last cycle who was really highly rated, went to camps, ran/tested well and had offers from everyone.

Fine to target a player from Canada if you recognize him early, but devoting significant resources to recruiting the area would be really wasteful.

not until later though. There are none that are ranked right now. Plus we’ll be a year ahead of guys on offers and relationships.

Damian Alford from canada last year came down here and played at Mcarthur. We offered but he ultimately went to Syracuse.

E
Top two Canadian players

We’ve recently offered him

Instead of UM investing in finding hidden gems in a whole other country, why not just hit SFLA kids earlier and harder?
