Im curious if sliding is actually safer than just diving forward unless you do it super early.

It’s like a few years ago when Pickett faked the slide knowing the defender would be playing soft to avoid hitting him.

Maybe it’s dirty. But the whole “you can’t touch me so I’m going to get even closer to you to get even more yards” goes against the spirit of the game.

Regardless when Moore slid the usc kid was looking to take him out at the knees. Either way he was looking to take him out. And he rejoiced in it.
 
I don’t know how some of yall can watch the clip and say Moore slid late. Moore was going down with 5 yards to spare between him and the defender. Defender hadn’t even lowered the shoulder when moore started to drop. Defender was looking to hurt Moore by any means, dirty and almost bountygate like. I know fans we advocate for a more physical game, but that is not the play to complain about this.
 
Dirty play.

The defender is not preventing extra yards. Moore would have been ruled down where he started his slide, thank you to Kenny Pickett's fake slide years ago.

DBs antics after the play warrant a multiple game suspension, IMO.

His post-hit behavior clearly reveals his intent.

I think with a QB, you want a slide rather than a dive. Sliding is instinctive, especially if you’ve played baseball. The only downside is ball placement

But a QB diving opens him up to potential shoulder/head injuries, generally, more than a slide.

Yes, the slide resulted in a head injury here, but a dive could catch your shoulder or head on a knee or shoulder hitting the ground awkwardly.

The unexpected part is that the USC player probably helped Oregon because Raiola might be better than Moore (who has never impressed me). The hit also seemed to galvanize Oregon.

A bit of the same thought...If Raiola takes Oregon to its 1st 'ship, it Stephens co-MVP? Or getting some cash in a brown paper bag from Phil Knight?

I had no issue with the defender's hit; the issue is with everything that happened afterward. He got the flag and that's penalty enough (I don't think targeting should be the call), but he should for **** sure get penalized for all the bull**** afterwards

Here's the thing. If he didn't slide at all you still can't hit a dude high like that. Head hunting has been outlawed for a while now.
 
It’s football. Defend yourself at all times on the field. Thinking you are safe because you run full speed at a defender and slide at the last second is just not smart.
 
Defenders get criticized unmercifully if they go low for the knees. Same if they go for the head.
There is a very small target near the midsection people generally are okay with big hits. A target that is moving.
When you are traveling full speed at a very athletic player who is traveling full speed until the very last second which slows down with some sort of silly slide it is hard for me to side with the offensive player.

Even that small target near the mid section isn't always safe, it's still roughing in the NFL if they land on top of the QB. It ain't easy these days.

Miami got called for targeting against Clemson for a shot to Trevor Lawrence's midsection in which Keontra Smith lead with his helmet. At the time I was certain that you couldn't call targeting for it but under review the call was upheld. Tough night for us compounded by what I felt was some fairly biased officiating. They were head hunting King all night. Anyways... karma's a *****.
 
It was bang bang and having played mostly on defense I usually side with the defender, but it seemed like he was coming in low *after* Moore initiated his slide. But it was so fast who knows if he had time to process. I agree his reaction is what exacerbated it. It wasn't even the kid of hit to celebrate. Had he just not reacted or came to his aid the hit itself I beleive would have been percieved much differently.
 
They need to just get rid of the slide. If QB wants to run, then either get tackled or go out of bounds. These plays happen to fast and this is just going to keep happening.
