Didn't Even Call Butch Back

I wanted Butch above all the other candidates, including Mark because I want the Cane football back and he was best prospect for that. Mark didn't want to come here until he got fired. He turned us down at least twice. Mark was the perfect hire for the school. They proved they would spend money and there is not possible chance he will recreate the one thing they don't want -- our old team. Mark will win more games, definitely the Coastal, probably the ACC and might even beat FSU this year. That is all they want. I wanted our place back. That will never happen now. We will have a better program than since Larry's 4th year but never what was before. It is done.

As for Butch, I feel no pity for him. I wanted him for ME and the rest of us fans who wanted Cane football back. Butch got his shot and took it. I would have given him a second chance because WE deserved it not him. Now it is over. He is family and did great for us in our lowest hour. For that, thank you Butch. We tried to get another shot but it could not be done. Now we move on.

I hope for our sakes, Mark can be more than he was at UGA, because we all know that what he did there is not enough for us. Again, not for Mark. he turned his back on us a couple times. Fine, that was his choice. Now he is home and I am hoping for the best. I am ever excited. Not like I would have been for Butch. Not enough to go out and buy lots of tickets or donate money, but excited. I do thing Mark has nice chance this year. FSU is heading down a little. We have a top QB. If Mark get the right DC we have some players on defense. We can make a run. A one lost ACC Champ Miami has good shot at making playoffs -- Miami ratings, feel good story about Mark and a hot QB could influence committee thinking Mark vs Bama in first round.

we will neve rknow whether richt can do better than what butch could have done bc butch wasnt given the opportunity. it will always be speculative whether he would build a new team equal to or near what he previously built. no one knows whether he could or could not. regardless, we made the correct hire and i think richt could lead us to the mountain top.

For me the mountain top is what matters. Mark win a NC, then he absolutely the right hire. He is a good hire regardless, but no NC then not the right hire.

You don't call your second or third choice back to tell them the bad news before your first choice has signed.

Feel for Butch, but he had a lot of baggage from his UNC days. A school that is just coming off probation could not take a chance on him. Never thought that Miami would pay the money necessary for a coach like Mark Richt. I was pleasantly surprised and think he's definitely the right hire!

Last time Butch was here, his agent consistently spoke with everyone under the sun, and this strategy resulted in numerous pay raises for Butch. I was told last week that on Butch's final plane ride with the team, Miami offered him a contract that placed him in the top 7-salaries of the NCAA (he was given this contract on the chartered plane). Dee broke his back getting Butch that kind of money. Butch told Dee that "he would sign it later on." Dee asked Butch if he was leaving and Butch said "no." Dee later learned that Butch had lied to him (Dee's NFL contacts let him know). Miami's biggest donors have not changed much since them. It appears that they afforded him the same kind of courtesy that Butch afforded them (similar to Jay Cutler's current situation).

Mr. Tomato wanted Butch, because Mr. Tomato was Golden's strongest benefactor. Mr. Tomato is older now and did not want to be blamed for Miami's demise. When Richt emerged, it was an easy choice.

Butch will leave zero legacy. He has the millions that his wife demanded, but he will never be remembered. At this point in his life, it bothers him.

That first paragraph is accurate.

Not to burst too many bubbles, but old Butch was a shyster of the highest order. Here's the letter from LSU AD showing what old Butch was up to while at UM:

Looky, looky here. Saint Butch wasn't really married to UM as reported by the BBB crowd. I couldn't be happier with the Richt hiring, but this makes me happier that we didn't BBB.

Correct. Butch's agent floated Butch's name for every head coaching vacancy in North America when Butch was the head football coach at UM, and he used this strategy as leverage to get Butch a raise every year. UM's fat, dense AD, Paul Dee went along with it. It was ponderous.

thats why i saw it wouldnt surprise me that the former players he basically mislead (or lied to) would go with Richt who is a man of his word.

Funniest **** will be when Folden takes his job on ESPN. Campaigned for two years for Folden's job. Now Folden's hunting him.

I feel bad for him, but he has to understand that this is a business....just like he left for Cleveland b/c of a business decision, Miami chose a relevant coach who was available as a business decision.

Mark has won 73% of his games, two conference titles, several BCS bowl games after taking over a dump of program called Georgia. He's a top caliber coach. Our fondest memories of Butch as a coach were "good" but not great result at UNC while hiring someone w/ a known questionable past.

Miami had to go w/ the safer and better choice. I love Butch to death, wish someway we get him on board w/ this program in some capacity....but he has to understand that Miami made the better hire and if he was an AD and he had a choice between hiring a guy who's team is constantly in National Title Contention vs. a guy who's been away for 5 years and went out in disgrace, I'm sure he would've done the same thing. This coming from a BBB crew member.

I thought Butch was the safest hire, but now I think the admin got it right.

Can't disagree at all.

Only Stoops, Switzer and Osborne exceed Richt in wins in their first 15 years of coaching.
Those three are, or in Stoops' case will be, in the CF HOF.

A second thought, when Richt was personally involved in QB development and play calling, in his
first 7 years, his W/L record was even better than his Excellent Total Career W/L record. He has
said he WILL get back to QB development and play calling! That's big for the program and Kaaya.

Loved Butch but, the Canes are in excellent hands with Richt!

No self respecting miami fan would call butch a loser. Whether you wanted him or not.

this

**** all you disrespectful pieces of sh*t

would love to see what you could have done with this program missing 35 scholarships

You do know miami fans flew fire butch davis banners in 99 right?

Wrong.

There was never any "fire Butch" banner. And you got the year incorrect, too.

It was 1997. The banner read "FROM NATION CHAMPS TO NATIONAL CHUMPS - THANKS BUTCH"
