Did the whole secondary play poorly? Or was it…

Obviously the more it’s talked about the more we see it’s a bit of everything that is having some issues. But like a few others mentioned it feels like if the LB’s weren’t just thumpers it could potentially clean up a lot. Their issues are making other have to do twice the work.

We need the Young guys to start figuring it out to take some snaps.

1 and 9 can never be on the field together again. It just can’t happen. And dunnigan is a freshman and is expected to do so much and he’s doing a great job but he’s a freshman. Last year we had Jakobe and Scott as old vets and they were good man. We didn’t have to. Blitz as much either. This year we do and it’s leaving bad pass defenders on islands

I thought Marcelin was quite good last night. He needs to play more in games like that when the opponent is passing 2/3 of the time.

PFF is pure garbage.
It was the LBs and safeties. I assume you watched. Almost nothing was thrown towards a corner and if it was it was more exploiting #s for a bubble or obvious holes in spot 3
I think our secondary doesn’t trust our lbs in coverage which makes them hesitate. Need to flip that linebacker from OSU cause that dude can cover. He has short area burst and change of direction and is a missile. This is why other linebackers we have don’t play, they have traits but can’t move in space.

Here are the FACTS:

- JJ Dunnigan gave up 6rec on 7 targets for 70yds & 2TD's with 4 of those catches being 1st downs.

- Zechariah Poyser gave up 5rec on 5 targets for 56yds & 2TD's with 3 of those catches being 1st downs.

- Chase Smith gave up 3rec on 4 targets for 54yds, with all 3 of those catches being 1st downs

- Mo Toure gave up 3rec on 3 targets for 51yds with 2 of those catches being 1st downs.

Only ONE CB played bad in coverage, that was Xavier Lucas, who gave up 3rec on 5 targets for 44yds & 2 1st downs.

But EOC only gave up 2 catches for 19yds the whole game.

So while I understand the new board narrative is to place all the blame on Terry Jefferson, if you guys care about being accurate, you're going to have to call a Ball a Ball & a Strike & Strike, and include Will Harris in your DB coach campaign.

Terry Jefferson coaches the CB's
Will Harris coaches the Safeties
Matt Birkett coaches the Nickels
Corey Heatherman coaches the LB's

A good coordinator, offensive or defensive, accentuates players’ strengths and mitigates their weaknesses through scheme and game situation management.

Heatherman is failing at this. We are asking certain players to do things they fundamentally cannot do.

Scheme or otherwise, that’s where the problem starts.

Think we miss Zac Etheridge way more than initially perceived.

Zac Etheridge was the CB's Coach last year.

Will Harris is the Safeties Coach.

The issue vs UNC wasn't the CB's, it was Safeties & LB's.
Etheridge was the defensive passing game coordinator no?

I’ve re-watched half the game so far, I’m not putting majority blame on the CBs from what I’ve seen.

never [layed the position, but how can you play deep as a safety and not see a receiver running free down the middle from 30 -40 yards away and not move off your spot towards the guy running freely down the middle. Zone doeesn't mean you can't leave yours.

The LBs are our biggest issues in coverage, and there is no fix happening now. But they're not the only issues. Lucas has taken a step back from last year. EOC is basically the same as last year, while we at least hoped he'd take a small step forward. Our 3rd corners haven't been good, and frankly, aren't up to the standard of athletes they need to be. They get run away from too easily, and can't plant there foot and go when in spot coverage.

Poyser seems to be a nice kid, but he is a below average athlete for what should be out there on this level of team. When he's in position to make a tackle he usually makes it, but he just can't get to the spots he needs to be. It is what it is. JJ has had a very good year for a frosh, but he gets picked on at times in coverage, which happens to frosh. Thorton just can't play in coverage and Day should be a career 4th or 5th stringer who helps on special teams.

There's no new personnel walking through the door at this point, but they need to get Fitzgerald back at safety and paired with JJ. They're our best at seeing, reading, and getting to the spot. That will help cover up some of the coverage issues from our LBs and corners.

From a schematic standpoint, I'd love to see Hetherman utilize more Bear fronts. Our LBs aren't going to miraculously become good in pass coverage. That ship has sailed. But the Bear front can at least create more confusion for college QBs for when they're coming and where they're dropping to. Rememeber, these are college QBs we're facing, not NFL QBs. they get confused, and it doesn't need to be exotic. The Bear front isn't exotic.

Also, I'd like to see more blitzing from our nickel spot tight to the line, not the 10 yard off the line blitzes we're seeing. Make offenses speed up processing and make o-lines communicate quickly on pass offs. Our d-line is getting pressure, but the difference is this year they're not getting all the way home. That near line blitz is something I feel would create a split second of confusion that will allow our line to get all the way home.

This year’s corners seemingly struggle much more getting off blocks. LBs and safeties being out of position creates more 1v1 tackling situations, resulting in more missed tackles. Overall, the DBs aren’t as physical as last year when tackling. Way more diving at legs vs wrapping/running through contact. Honestly could be a result of guys being forced to tackle 1v1 in space at higher rates. Wouldn’t put it on the coaches. They’re teaching exactly what was taught last year. Personnel issue at this point in the season
It’s a mixture of both Coaching/Scheme and players not executing/Tackling ..Heatherman can’t go the Guidry route n just hope it works out he has to adjust his scheme or Petrino just laid out the blueprint to essentially render our defense useless UNC literally dinked and dunked to five straight TDs effortlessly and we couldn’t do anything about it.
