Did the whole secondary play poorly? Or was it…

The scheme has now been overplayed and never evolved. It was bound to catch up with him eventually, even CIS members could see what was coming like those with the nickel and safety blitzes. OCs figured out the rules and dictated what we do via their own alignment and motions etc (or at least had a good idea of what was coming)

Reminds me of playing NCAA on PlayStation and guys use the same few plays over and over because they are effective. It works, they win a lot until a good player figures it out after seeing it enough times. They should have been growing their skills vs spamming the same stuff.

I was hoping year two would introduce more match principals into his cover 3, similar to how Indiana runs it. But that never happened, we still sit in those same drop zones covering grass.

never [layed the position, but how can you play deep as a safety and not see a receiver running free down the middle from 30 -40 yards away and not move off your spot towards the guy running freely down the middle. Zone doeesn't mean you can't leave yours.

Especially when theres nowhere else to go. Why Bryce didnt slide down from the endzone or jump that redzone route i have no idea

Here are the FACTS:

- JJ Dunnigan gave up 6rec on 7 targets for 70yds & 2TD's with 4 of those catches being 1st downs.

- Zechariah Poyser gave up 5rec on 5 targets for 56yds & 2TD's with 3 of those catches being 1st downs.

- Chase Smith gave up 3rec on 4 targets for 54yds, with all 3 of those catches being 1st downs

- Mo Toure gave up 3rec on 3 targets for 51yds with 2 of those catches being 1st downs.

Only ONE CB played bad in coverage, that was Xavier Lucas, who gave up 3rec on 5 targets for 44yds & 2 1st downs.

But EOC only gave up 2 catches for 19yds the whole game.

So while I understand the new board narrative is to place all the blame on Terry Jefferson, if you guys care about being accurate, you're going to have to call a Ball a Ball & a Strike & Strike, and include Will Harris in your DB coach campaign.

Terry Jefferson coaches the CB's
Will Harris coaches the Safeties
Matt Birkett coaches the Nickels
Corey Heatherman coaches the LB's
i'm surprised at this response as i've been disappointed in our feetwork, lack of field awareness, and refusal to jam or reroute

Yards Allowed per PFF

Dunnigan 70 (39 cov snaps)
Poyser 56 (42 cov snaps)
Chase Smith 54 (22 cov snaps)
Mo Toure 51 (33 cov snaps)
Lucas 44 (23 cov snaps)
EOC 19 (26 cov snaps)
Lightfoot 18 (2 cov snaps)
Mack 15 (16 cov snaps)
Fitzgerald 9 (38 cov snaps: 24 cb, 20 slot, 19 saf)
Marcellin 8 (11 cov snaps)
Damari 0 (16 cov snaps)
Thornton -3 (10 cov snaps)

LB: 113 yds on 66 snaps. They’re great vs the run but a team w a good te like Thurman, or attacking the short middle if we’re in zone and they’re dreadful. Big and slow

SAF (minus Fitzgerald): 123 on 91 snaps. Really poor. Poyser has also struggled in coverage and dunnigan (albeit an amazing true FR) has too.

Bryce is unreal. Playing Keionte Scott

CB: 63 yds on 65 snaps. Great! Especially w no pass rush. They’re not the problem

Cornerbacks were fine last night.

Linebackers in coverage is a real problem and our safeties were lost positionally. Need to permananently play Fitzgerald at safety where he shines with Poyser, Dunnigan at nickel which is his best spot, and line up Lucas and O'connor at CB.

More importantly. We cant be playing Toure and Smith at LB at the same time anymore. Need Marcellin, Wiley, or Bonner to rotate in.

If 1 or 9 takes one step down towards the run they’re cooked in pass defense. We really need to do better with substitutions by situation.

We need to keep developing the young LBs so that they can get more playing time, and we need at least one more healthy CB to allow other DBs to play their best natural positions. I'd love for Thornton to develop some immediate coverage skills, but that might be asking too much.

1 and 9 can never be on the field together again. It just can’t happen. And dunnigan is a freshman and is expected to do so much and he’s doing a great job but he’s a freshman. Last year we had Jakobe and Scott as old vets and they were good man. We didn’t have to. Blitz as much either. This year we do and it’s leaving bad pass defenders on islands
We could have a 3 man rush and drop everyone back in coverage. Guarantee there’s still guys wide open. The defense is lost, can’t tackle, and undisciplined. That falls 100% on coaching. NC has 1/3 of our talent but you couldn’t tell it by watching the game

Lot of issues, but a start would be tackling & limiting YAC. We have 3 guys running to the ball, either arm tackles or trying to blow somebody up, and ball carrier breaks free for another 10 yds & 1st down.
Tackling was atrocious. So many plays they got an extra 3-4 yards which meant the difference between 3rd & medium and 3rd & very short which was converted by a 2 yd run.

This defense is so over reliant on a true freshman from Kansas it’s insane. He’s awesome and may eventually be great here but we can’t win a title with him getting picked on every game lol

not Trying to S my own D. But petrino was always going to abuse the LBs putting them in space with RBs and TEs. Historically he’s called the games of his life against Miami. I don’t have x & o answers. But it’s clear we may need to sacrifice some run defense (downhill lbs) with whoever is more athletic idk who that is at this point
This has been clear since last season ended, since the offseason, since we played our first game…. Yet our DC who controls the lb rotation refuses to play any lb that isn’t Toure, Smith, Marcelin any snaps.

I wouldn’t expect any change whatsoever. And if we do, the question is why the **** they had to wait 10 weeks to do the absolute ******* obvious

And if you really want to be disgusted check the ******* snap counts for the LBs+DBs….
