Did Mario think ND was out of timeouts at the end?

Don't worry, it will happen again.

The verdict?....
Fact or "nah"?

I think there's some credence to the theory that he mistook the 2 minute warning as the first ND timeout.

It came one play before ND started using their timeouts:

Marty Brown run for 8 yards to the ND 39 on 2nd and 10 (this was a MASSIVE play, by the way)
Two-minute warning
Marty Brown run for 3 yards to the ND 36 on 3rd and 2
Marty Brown run for 6 yards to the ND 30 on 1st and 10
This is where ND starts taking timeouts. First one after first down. Second one after second down. Third one after third down.

If Mario thought the first stoppage, which was the 2 minute warning, was really ND timeout #1, then yeah I'd sure as **** explain the surprise on his face when the clock stopped for the 4th time.

What makes Cristobal so good from Sunday to Friday (hard work & preparation) is what kills him on game day. El tipo is not the quickest of thinkers. I support him because he is the last best chance for Miami to become Miami again. He has the Columbus mafia FULLY behind him. And is an absolute beast recruiting. Pero, he will always have the potential for a brain fart that ruins our season.

Just like we were fully aware to keep running the ball when we needed to kneel, correct? Just like Deion was also fully aware of him not using his 2 T.O’s left as CU bled out the clock?

Listen, pls understand some of the most prideful ppl in sports r coaches. They don’t like being second guessed or made to look incompetent, & will spin any narrative to justify lapse moments.
My comment actually had to do with the game we played 2 days ago. Not sure why you get your jollies yapping about history. No one can fix those dumb plays.

I thought the same thing watching it but the entire approach on that drive was playing for a FG

I'm not sure why you would ever put the ball in the air on 3rd down instead of burning their last timeout. If you put the ball in the air its on 1st or 2nd down and its a high % screen or quick slant. Not on 3rd down right at the edge of FG range when you want to keep the ball centered.

I lean towards believing what Dawson said in the presser and knowing they were trying to burn their TOs and play for the FG

At worst, he thought they used all 3 already and there would be 30 seconds instead of 1 minute which doesn't change the approach at all.

Because 1 timeout doesn't mean anything with that amount of time left.

What's the expected win percentage if you have the ball down by 3 with a minute left and 1 timeout versus zero? In college football? Very, very minimal.

It's far more important to get closer for your kicker and kick the ball with no time remaining in the process than it is them burning their last timeout.

UNLESS......you thought the other team didn't have any timeouts, because a minute with no timeouts versus under 30 seconds with no timeouts is a MASSIVE win expectancy delta.

We'll never know the true story but it was a "Holy ****!" moment for me just now finishing the first rewatch. Maybe I interpreted it incorrectly, but I've been watching ball for many, many, many years and seen just about every iteration of body language and reactions in just about every possible situation, and to me, that looked like a dude who was shocked the clock stopped again. Would love to be wrong because I love Mario and I think this is a really good football team right now and it's built to last.

1. Who in the FOCK says jollies??!
2. I just gave u complete “context” via recent (Sanders) & post (Mario circa 2023) examples as to y u need to stop listening to coach speak about blunders that happens on their watch.

You have a point. I coach AAA hockey with a 16 year retired pro. He’s great at prep, game planning, being immersed in the details of the game, and constructive corrections with the guys as they come to the bench. The clock and other issues on the fly are his Achilles heel. Reminds me a lot of Mario.

Ultimately the responsibility falls on him. But time management staff should be on top of that in game. If he was surprised it’s a multi-level failure.

No I noticed it live as well, I’m with you.

But Dawson laid it out pretty well so maybe he knew and Mario didn’t? I know that would be at odds with the “Mario is calling every run play” crowd though.
Or he’s just saying it to cover their asses or maybe it’s true . I will say watching Mario coach in a close game as a Cane fan is like watching somebody trim your pubes with a chain saw

They love it, man. You can see it in the pre-game video all over TikTok. The Canes are about to run on the field and I **** you not, Mario has to be back in the 80s. It is extremely hard for great players to lose that feeling.

If he hasn’t already, he should walk to the math department and find himself a genius and hand off all those split time decisions, preferably a nerd that doesn’t even know what football is.
