Diaz vs The Best- Advanced Stats Version

I'm excited about the fact we are going back to a high pressure, aggressive 4-3 defense that believes in a shell behind it and asks the Safeties to help with the run and against the deep pass, but the numbers show Diaz to be merely a good DC, rather than a truly elite one. He was operating a defense that lost much of its talent from the year before- eight starters, including three of their starting defensive linemen. Jay Hughes was defensive captain at SS. Jamerson Love started 25 games. Matthew Wells started 33 games at SAM. Preston Smith was all-SEC and started 24 games on DL. Kaleb Eulls started 52 games and was invited to Senior Bowl at DL. PJ Jones started 27 games on the DL. Curtis Virges played in every career game on the DL. Bernardrick McKinney was a first team All-American and Butkus semi-finalist.

Frankly, to keep the defense as together as he was able to with losing all those players was fairly remarkable. His defense finished 48th in overall yards per play data, but that's with uneven competition due to them being in the SEC West. But, not only did Diaz keep the defense together in spite of needing to replace eight starters, they actually IMPROVED defensively from 72nd and 5.5 yards per play to the aforementioned 48th and 5.3 yards per play.

Given who they had to play, the losses sustained, and the resources available to them, I would say Diaz fared extremely well over the past two seasons. This was one at Miss. State and the previous one at La. Tech where he engineered another huge turnaround.

They lost EIGHT starters and IMPROVED on defense?

FWIW Geoff Collins had a top 15 defense at Florida this year after moving on from Mississippi St.

Also if you watch the bama game this year the defense played great each score was a long play that were caused by missed tackles not scheme. Plus the MSU offense couldn't get anything done. I too am cautiously optimistic. Plus he will have full reign of his defense and no one lurking over him I.e Mack Brown. I am excited to see what he does with this opportunity to run his defense with no one getting in his way

YES! Thank you for posting! I put the advanced stats in the main Diaz stats thread and felt like it wasn't getting the respect it deserved.

These two measures are far and away the best stand alone look at coaching skill!

In case anyone was wondering, Miami was 66 in FEI and 54 in S&P in 2015.

What about 2014? You look at regular stats and you would assume Miami was very solid on defense.
40 in FEI and 26 in S&P+

Here is Doritos full 5 years that I put together in another thread:

FEI S&P+
2015 66 57
2014 40 26
2013 92 89
2012 94 79
2011 71 69
AVERAGE 73 64

wow really speaks volumes. Stats are stats but a 50 spot increase is significant and refreshing

Also, I posted this in another thread and figured I'd leave it here.

Coach_MannyDiaz #HailState defense has only given up 20+ yard plays on 3.93% of all plays run against them. This is lowest % of any FBS tm.

Coach_ShoopPSU's #NittanyLion def has only allowed 17 20+ yd pass plays- lowest in FBS. Next lowest is Coach_MannyDiaz #HailState def w/18

^granted these were before the arkansas disaster for diaz this year, Mississippi state was best in the nation at limiting "big plays" ( 20 yards or more).

although he is seen high risk, high reward?.. He doesn't give up the big play on errant blitzes.

It looks like his 2011 Texas defense was his best? It would be interesting to hear the opinions of people who know defenses and coaching staffs in regards to the quality of position coaches Diaz will have here vs what he had in 2011 or any of the other years. I might have to wait on this I know his staff here isn't full yet. Just an aspect I'd be interested in if anyone has thoughts.
Bo Davis.. Duane Akina?

Why are these stats not being acknowledged by the 3 or 4 who run from thread to thread spreading their agenda about why he will be a failure?

they are doing their best not to click on this thread and realize that statistics matter. These statistics are not convenient for their argument so therefore they must be invalid.

It is what it is. the guy is not elite but he will have access to more talent, be in a much weaker conference, under a better head coach, and will work along side probably the best defensive line coach in the country in kuligowski to help him succeed. I think he'll even improve among these numbers

FYI, Diaz was fired after the 2nd game of the season in 2013 so not sure I'd include that season.

Take out that season and his average Defense rounded to the highest number ranks 24th according to FEI and 25th according to S&P+

^this

game was a **** show. no excuses but take away that one game (since it shouldn't hold the weight of a whole season anyways) and then all of a sudden this guys is legit top 25 in two of the most important metrics pertaining to defense throughout his tenure. Although you would think he was a high school coach if you read this board

Manny Diaz = horrible game planning | Hornfans

Is allow a team to pile up rush yards a part of Spanish Dorito's "advanced metrics"?

I've got no dog in this fight, but I see a trend here. The OP in this and other threads are using objective metrics to analyze Diaz. Stats suggest he is good, but not elite. Fullyericht merely links to fan blogs and forums saying Diaz sucks as his "evidence."

Appreciate the advanced stats. Thank you. Lol at the above post.

So many factors play into this. Regardless, I like the hire. Interesting to see who the DB coach will be, but pairing him with Kool seems to be a complementary match.

No, check out Lucanes thread. GS goes in depth in that thread. His biggest concern is not enough man to man and running Fire zone.
