Defensive line two-deep

Hegemon, Rousseau gonna play, but most likely situational and the 4th d end. I think they’ll go with seniority (Patchan). And hill will play a ton on passing downs as well. And garvin. We can only throw so many pass rushing d ends in the game on passing downs. Hill will get a lot of those. Garvin isn’t coming out. Rousseau will probably get the 4th amount of reps. But he’ll get some sacks.

There’s no need for any DTs to get burn on obvious passing downs. Put Hill, Garvin, Greg, and Patchan all out there at once. ****, I wouldn’t even have them in a stance I’d let them all move around the LOS until the snap

Totally agree, we will just have to see which directions the coach will go. That being do you a prediction on who will play WDE and SDE. If I have to predict I would say Patchan and Garvin will play SDE' while hill and Rousseau play WDE.

I don't think WDE and SDE will matter much on the defense this year. It's going to be attack from all angles. I would agree with what you said above if I had to choose. Hill looked really good against that left tackle in @brock 's post earlier.
DT is where things get more interesting. There's younger unproven talent with huge upside (Ford/Nesta) vs. average power 5 veterans (Bethel/UCLA.) Nobody, including the coaches, will know this one until UCLA gets here.

Nah at least one of Nesta or Chigozie gotta be in on passing downs... they can get in the backfield.

Anybody that thinks that Hill isn't gonna start is either crazy or drunk porsting. Dudes a beast. He's put up solid numbers vs. ACC competition before. Not many of our players can say that. What we have.... is a lot of POTENTIAL, with little PRODUCTION. He brings production and much needed experience to the DL. So do some of you guys think that our most productive lineman decided to come here and sit behind said potential? GTFOH This doesn't make any sense. I saw at least one of you say that he's probably gonna be 3rd string (LOLOL WTF!?). Let it play out, and I'm sure you'll see him become a starter or a key contributor the minute he steps on the field.

WDE - Jon Garvin/ Jahfari Harvey/ Cam Wiliams

DT1 - Pat Bethel/ Nesta Silvera/ Jason Blissett/ Jared Harrison-Hunte/ Tyreic Martin

DT2 - Chigozie Nnoruka/ Jon Ford/ Jordan Miller/ Jalar Holley

SDE - Trevon Hill/ Scott Patchan/ Gregory Rousseau

Or

WDE - Trevon Hill/ Gregory Rousseau/ Jahfari Harvey

DT1 - Nesta Silvera/ Chigozie Nnoruka/ Jason Blissett/ Jalar Holley

DT2 - Jon Ford/ Pat Bethel/ Jordan Miller/ Jared Harrison-Hunte/ Tyreic Martin

SDE - Jon Garvin/ Scott Patchan/ Cam Williams

I prefer Garvin on the Weak side, but depending on what weight Hill comes in as I believe he'll be the starter at Strong-side.

IMO, Nesta will eventually be the starting 3-tech, but the coaches are going to value the experience of Seniors in Pat Bethel & Chigozie early on in the season, allowing for Nesta to be a pass rushing interior menace on 3rd down.

I also wouldn't be shocked to see Patchan as a Weak side rusher as well, even though typically DE's his size are SDE.

And yes I do believe Rousseau will play a ton on both sides as a pass rushing specialist.

Great read Liberty. Agree with both options if you will along the defensive front. I also feel we’re not going to miss GWIII as much as previously thought. I believe between Nnoruka, Ford, and Silvera, that we have 3 that can produce the totality of what Willis did last year - if not greater. I think the DL will easily become the strength to this team and the reasoning between 9-4 and 11-2.

The Strong side sets the edge for the Defense, it's pivotal to have a good SDE vs the run game.

JJack was our Strong side last year because we didn't have a natural SDE to replace Chad & it showed. JJack played out of position, he's not a Strong-side end he's a pure pass rusher, but Garvin played better as a Weak-side rusher.

If Hill is around the 250-260 range you definitely want him on the Strong side because Garvin is a pure assassin as WDE. If we have to play Garvin on the Strong side it won't stop him, but it will not be putting him in his best position to utilize his skills the most effectively.

Both Patchan & Rousseau are prototype Strong side rushers, but due to their wiry long armed frames they can also be Weak side rushers who do nothing but collapse the pocket & attack the QB.

We actually have 3 possibly 4 situational pass rushers who are difficult matchups bringing immense pressure on 3rd & longs with Garvin, Hill, Rousseau & Harvey. We can mix it up like crazy giving Offenses different looks.

This is the most depth we've had on the Defensive line in the last 4 years, especially at DT.

Am I out of my gourd or did Garvin play LDE and Jackson RDE exclusively in 2018.

I get the traditional SDE vs. WDE. At least according to UM publicly all our DE's are about the same size. You might as well just get the best guys on the field and attack if that's the case. The one thing you need to consider is JJ still ended up with double the sacks as Garvin.

I agree run support wasn't as good without Major 9. Patchan should be bulking up to 265-270 so he gets PT against running teams on 1st and 2nd down. It'd be nice to have a poor man's Chad that can withstand the run on the edge. Then have one of the rotation pass rushers come in on 3rd down.

All that being said, it's the Cane way to play smaller, faster, and tougher guys than everyone else. I see Diaz sticking with that formula.

Lol @ anyone thinking Hill isn't going to start and/or have Patchan starting.

This isn’t a video game. He’s not even on campus yet.. has to learn playbook, go through practice, conditioning, etc.. He will play a lot Week 0, but him starting seems unlikely barring injury from Patchan..
