Taking a closer look at the collection of players on this defensive line, this could very well be the deepest Miami has been since the early 2000’s. With the versatility that guys like Moultrie, Mesidor, Roberts, and even Lichtenstein bring to the table this team could have 8-9 DE’s and 8-9 DT’s ready to rotate every game. Even at 80 snaps a game, there are enough bodies that not one player will ever have to play more than 20 snaps a game that’s just 5 snaps a quarter. These guys could potentially be fresh all game long.
I believe there will be a roll (even if very small) form Moss and Kelly being they were able to enroll early.
There are 3 nose tackle body types on the roster now with Miller, Jackson, and Haye. Well 4 when you add in true freshman Moten.
This is also a very experienced group with 9 or the 16 players being 3 years or more removed from high school. Then you also have two young guys in Taylor and Jackson who both played a lot of snaps as true freshmen.
I’m still in “believe it when I see it” mode but with the over all talent (multiple all conference players from the portal) and leaps and bounds better couching and scheme this could very well be a dominate group in the ACC.
We all know the ACC has never been know for having great offensive line play so things could get very interesting in the trenches this season.
DE
Mitchell Agude 6-4 255 Covid SR (2nd team All PAC-12)
Jahfari Harvey 6-4 252 Covid RSO
Akheem Mesidor 6-2 272 Covid SO (3rd team All Big 12)
Chantz Williams 6-4 255 Covid SO
Jabari Ishmael 6-5 245 RFR
Nyjalik Kelly 6-4 240 FR
Cyrus Moss 6-5 215 FR (he doesn’t have to be 250 to be an effective stand-up rush end for 4-6 snaps a game)
DE/DT
Antonio Moultrie 6-4 265 Covid RSR (2nd team All-Conference USA)
Jacob Lichtenstein 6-5 270 Covid RSR
Elijah Roberts 6-4 285 Covid SO
DT
Jordan Miller 6-4 320 Covid RJR
Jared Harrison-Hunte 6-4 285 Covid RSO
Leonard Taylor 6-3 305 SO
Darrell Jackson 6-6 320 SO
Allan Haye, Jr. 6-2 305 RFR
Ahmad Moten 6-3 290 FR (I can see him taking a redshirt)
Ok, I'll give you the 3 "proven" players. However, the so called "depth" is in question.Who has on orange and green glasses??? I literally said in the OP “I’m still in believe it when I see it mode”
You said non of these guys are proves. In the OP I also stated that 3 of the guys where all conference players.
No more than 3-4 defensive linemen will play on the field at once and there is a chance that 3 of those guys (Agude, Mesidor, and Moultrie) could be on the field at the same time. All 3 of them were named to their respective All conference teams.
My question is simple
What makes a guy proven, if making the All conference list does not, according to you?
Are you saying that a guy must be a 1st team All American before he can be considered a “proven player”
Not trying to argue with you, but again I said the Defensive Line “could” be deep, meaning there is potential there. I never said the defensive line “will be” deep.Ok, I'll give you the 3 "proven" players. However, the so called "depth" is in question.
In my book depth means minimal drop in performance. I would like for our players to show up "bigtime". Like you I'll wait til I see it.
Absolutely. This kid was a top 10 recruit in the country. He needs to have a gr-15 like season. We are very very desperate for playmakers on defense. A lot of people around the program told me he had an underwhelming spring, so he needs to get it together this fall or else he will just be another 5 star Miami bust.Leonard Taylor has to "grow a pair" and be a national All-American as a true sophomore or he will be a "disappointment?"

Manny failed to recruit good defensive lineman during his time as head coach. He only got Taylor. Leanord Taylor is the only player that has superstar potential. We just gotta hope the rest of the unit can do their part and pressure the qb.Not trying to argue with you, but again I said the Defensive Line “could” be deep, meaning there is potential there. I never said the defensive line “will be” deep.
In addition to those 3 proven players. There are also 5 more defensive lineman on this roster that have all logged starting minutes and have made plays at times. Now they were not dominate but they have “flashed”. Well that’s all you can expect from a rotational player is to flash and make a few plays a game. If they were dominate consistently they would be full time starters.
Jahfari Harvey (Saw action in all 12 games and made five starts. Had 26 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks…Had one interception returned for touchdown)
Jacob Lichtenstein (stated in the pac12 at USC, Mario spoke about how he was a tough match up when they would face him at Oregon)
Jared Harrison-Hunte (started 8 games last season 6.5 tackles for loss and 2 sacks. In 2020 he started 1 game had 6 tackles for loss and 3 sacks)
Leonard Taylor (lead Miami in tackles for loss as a true freshman. We all know that most college football players take their biggest jump from freshman to sophomore season. Now with better coaching, why wouldn’t we expect a big jump from LT)
Darrell Jackson (started in Big10 as a true freshman at Maryland. Same applies to Jackson when it comes to the freshman to sophomore jump)
I have given you 8 guys, 3 all conference players and 5 guys who have logged starting minutes. Now add in better coaching, better player development, and better defensive scheme and that gives you the “potential” to be a deep defensive line.
@Boarcane is locked in with the program and said the opposite (in this thread) about LT this spring.Absolutely. This kid was a top 10 recruit in the country. He needs to have a gr-15 like season. We are very very desperate for playmakers on defense. A lot of people around the program told me he had an underwhelming spring, so he needs to get it together this fall or else he will just be another 5 star Miami bust.
I agree with you regarding Defensive Tackles but Danny Miaz signed several blue chip defensive ends that are still on this roster.Manny failed to recruit good defensive lineman during his time as head coach. I don't know what's so funny. A lot of people expected he was going to be the standout defensive tackle. He didn't make first team for some of the depth charts I saw throughout the course of the spring. I never said he had a bad spring. He just didn't make the leap we all expected. We are so desperate for playmakers on defense, and he is really the only guy on the line that has superstar potential
The fact that he only got one top 100 defensive end doing his tenure is pretty embarrassing. Having the 201st recruit as your second best end is nothing to be bragging about. I guess it is under Manny's joke of a staff. Mario will consistently be getting 5 stars and high 4 stars. Chantz Williams is going into year 3, and he hasn't done anything. There is a reason we brought in so many defensive lineman from the portalI agree with you regarding Defensive Tackles but Danny Miaz signed several blue chip defensive ends that are still on this roster.
Jahfari Harvey (4 star #12 DE and #201 overall in the 2019 class)
Chantz Williams (4 star #7 DE and #85 overall in the 2020 class)
Elijah Roberts (4 star #13 DE and #358 overall in the 2020 class)
Jabari Ishmael (4 star #18 DE and #243 overall in the 2021 class)
That’s 4 blue chip defensive ends. Those guys simply need to be developed. Fortunately they now have Rod Wright and Hall of Famer Jason Taylor to help unlock their potential.
I know where you coming from. Increased numbers and better players added to existing talent. I agree 100. Mario recognized that we needed an influx of DL talent quickly to allow us to beat/compete with top teams. He did that by increasing depth and talent. We really should have won 3 games we lost. With improved DL, LB and CB play will improve as well.Taking a closer look at the collection of players on this defensive line, this could very well be the deepest Miami has been since the early 2000’s. I’ve been told the exact opposite by his teammates and some coaches. He’s doing well. Maybe he’s not an all American, but I’d be curious to know who thinks he’s failing.Absolutely. I won't air the coach out but he is expected to start. Not sure how accurate that is but I would think he would know more than me.I’ve been told the exact opposite by his teammates and some coaches. He’s doing well. Maybe he’s not an all American, but I’d be curious to know who thinks he’s failing.
I never said he was failing. We all expected him to take the next step in the spring and emerge as the clear number 1 DT. And he got outperformed by some of the other dtsI’ve been told the exact opposite by his teammates and some coaches. He’s doing well. Exactly! Well said sirI never expected LT to be the anchor this season like some of you guys. How many second year DTs make a P5 all conference, much less AA?
As I've noted before, Vince Wilfork was the most disruptive DT on roster as a sophomore, but he didn't start, he rotated in. And he was not all conference or AA. From Wikipedia: "Wilfork did not start a game in his 2002 sophomore season either, but still recorded 43 tackles and seven sacks"
I want Taylor to disrupt like Wilfork did. I honestly don't care if he starts, as long as he gets 20-40 snaps in a game where he puts the fear of God into the QB or ball carrier. A lot will depend on his counterpart. Nesta was a good DT. But he didn't attack the OL or occupy the double team. Ford was the guy that did that. Hopefully Jackson (and Miller and Haye) do that this season.
